PET SLIMMERS OF THE YEAR INTERVIEW

...And The Sky Fell EP [FREE DOWNLOAD] cover art

Pet Slimmers Of The Year are a British Sludge/Post-Rock/Post-Metal band who have become one of my fave UK Underground acts of recent years. They have appeared on my blog a couple of times now.

Their blend of emotionally driven Sludge/Post-Metal riffs have struck a chord with many of us in the UK. I have recently been given the chance to interview this great band.

Q1. How did Pet Slimmers Of The Year came about. And how did you come up with that wonderful name.

We were originally in a four piece progressive metal band called "A Thousand Fires" but following some commitment issues from our singer/guitarist we disbanded in 2007 but continued on as a three-piece instrumental band as we were inspired to continue to create music together. Our sound has continued to evolve.

As for the name, our drummer had a copy of Schott's Almanac, a best selling, annually published reference book, in his bathroom. Whilst enjoying some light toilet reading, our guitarist happened upon a section of the book detailing awards given out during that particular year, one of which happened to be "pet slimmer of the year". Having shared this particularly amusing anecdote with the rest of the band we agreed it would make a good name and have been stuck with it ever since.

Q2. How do you describe your music.

Ambient metal although a plethora of words have been used to describe us ranging from post-rock to movie soundtrack metal.

Q3. Who are your main influences.

Bossk, Oceansize, Mono, Meshuggah.

Q4. Is The Band A Full Time Job For you or do you have jobs and families to consider as well.

Although we would love to be able to pay our rent from playing in Pet Slimmers of the Year we all have various commitments and we all have full time jobs but the occasional payment for a gig or some merch sales is always very welcome.

Q5. How has the reception been to your music. I became a fan through Sludge Swamp and have never looked back.

People seem to really be on board with what we're doing and there is a bit of a boom recently of bands doing the kind of thing we are trying to do so I think it's a good time to be a part of the whole "post-rock/intrumental" scene with bands like And So I Watch You From Afar, Russian Circles and The American Dollar making waves, as well as Bossk re-forming and doing a Maida Vale session for the BBC recently.

Since releasing our EP's through the Lost Children net label and now Bandcamp we have had literally thousands of downloads so there are people out there listening to it and taking notice.

Q6. Do you tour much and is just local gigs that you do.

We have always been very active when it comes to playing live and since we have been taken on by management we are getting bigger and better shows and more exposure which is exactly what we need at this point in time. Plans are being made for some tours in the near future and we would love to play outside the UK as well.

Q7. How do you feel the state of the UK Underground scene is going. There are some brilliant bands out there which I feel don't get the recognition they deserve. Mainly due to rubbish Pop-Punk/Emo/Hairgel Metal bands taking over the scene.

You’re right, there are some amazing bands out there that don’t see the light of day and the ‘underground scene’ is flourishing. Unfortunately, that type of music isn’t what 12 years old girls want to hear so until then we’ll have to remain underground. It’s a good thing and keeps the music honest. If we were all commercial we’d all be wearing skinny jeans, eye make-up and have ridiculous hair. There are people out there though that are supporting bands such as ourselves and it's always great to see them at gigs, wether that be our own or somebody we've gone to check out on a recommendation..

Q8. You give your music away for free on BandCamp or on Internet Archive. What is your view on labels clamping down on bloggers and websites.

The industry has changed, and people paying for music isn’t really feasible anymore. In this genre you just want people to hear it so if that means giving our EPs away for free, then so be it. Particularly in this genre, bloggers more often help you rather than hinder. We’re always grateful when anyone likes what we do enough to post/re-post it and share it with others, the more people that hear it the better and blogging sites are a good medium to enable this to happen.

Q9. Do you have any plans to release your excellent albums on CD or Vinyl. Or is just too expensive to do nowadays.

Although it is expensive to produce a physical copy of your music, especially for unsigned bands, we do feel it is nice to have a well presented CD. Our second release, "...And The Sky Fell" is currently available on CD with full artwork which we sell at shows. Our forthcoming single, "Days Since I disappeared" will be available in CD format at both London and Winchester shows on the 2nd and 3rd of June respectively which we will be giving away free of charge as a pre-release before the single is officially released online.

Q10. How has the reaction been like to your music. Nationally and Internationally.

It appears a bulk of the people who listen to us are European which we think is cool. Generally the reaction is “I’ve never heard anything like that before” which is what you want, in a complimentary way of course! The people who hear it generally tend to really like it, it's just getting that exposure so that more and more people can discover us and get on board with what we're doing.

Q11. What are the future plans for PSOTY. I have listened to your new song – Days Since I Disappeared. WOW. Can't wait to hear the rest of that EP. Amazing song.

Thanks, we are very pleased with it. That song will be released as a single in the near future along with an accompanying short film which we are currently in the process of producing. Another five track EP will follow on which Days Since I disappeared will feature. We will be playing gigs up and down the country throughout the year as well as hopefully putting some tours together.

Q12. You recently opened your BandCamp Page for free downloads of your EP's. Looks like you had a brilliant response by fans. How was the overall feeling of this happening.

Awesome! We are really pleased with the response so far, Facebook and Bandcamp have been really useful tools in getting our music out there. We are very proud of the EPs and we feel that the more people that hear them the better so why not make them available free of charge? Our manager has been instrumental (no pun intended.....) in getting our music out to a wider audience. We really feel like we have a sense of direction now and we are very optimistic about the future of the band.

Q13. Do you think about ever writing a song with lyrics and vocals like Pelican did on their last album or are you sticking to instrumental work.

Actually two of the tracks on ‘…And The Sky Fell’ feature some vocal lines. These are faint and prop the tracks up with a little extra melody. We intend to keep the balance of instrumentals and vocals at this level because it's how we like to hear things. We’re never going to become a band with a front man.

Thanks for taking the time in answering these questions. Keep up the excellent work.

Dead To A Dying World are a brilliant band that incorporates Sludge, Doom, Black Metal and Post-Metal to brutal and highly original effect.

Their amazing 2011 S/T debut album was produced by Philip Cope of brilliant Sludge Metallers - KYLESA. So you know it's great with talent like that behind the production desk.

The album is a 3 song and 45 minute blast of amazing riffs that will have you head-banging in no time at all. It really is a masterclass of Extreme Metal and blends all their genres to great effect.

I originally listened to this back in 2011 and was astounded to what I was hearing. It really is a masterpiece you all need to check out now.

Not staying to one exact genre but blending them into something more startling and more original. It is brutal at times but incorporates some fine ambient music as well to portray a band not afraid to shake up the listeners imagination.

This is highly recommended by myself and you can download it for free from BandCamp right now.

The BandCamp Page has the link for Vinyl LP available on Tofu Carnage Records which is run by Sean from this brilliant band as well.

Check out Tofu Carnage Records BandCamp Page for more great releases. Sean is doing a great job in discovering some great talent especially Akkolyte.

Akkolyte features members of this amazing band and are more of a Experimental Jazz Grind vibe. If you want something more out there and a lot more harsher. Great Stuff.

Anyway Back To This Great Band. Get checking now as these are truly talented bunch of musicians are highly recommended.

The Black Lantern a Noise Rock/Punk Rock/Alt Rock band from Long Beach California.

The members are:

Russell - bass
Jesse - drums
Andy - guitar
Wendy - voice

The Black Lantern are a brilliantly cool Noise Rock/Punk Rock/Alt Rock Band who contacted me recently due to Aaron's awesome recent review of the new ÆGES album we recently published.

Well I decided to check them out and I was pleasantly surprised to what I found. The Black Lantern just plain out fucking rock. They play a loud kind of Noise Rock mixed in with Punk and Alt Rock influences.

They have an awesome 7 inch release called "Helicopter/Bombs Away" which shows how good this band actually are. Which you can download on BandCamp Pay Anything You Want Type Deal.

Even though it's only on for 7 minutes or so. It does show what a supremely talented band are. And in Wendy they have a frontwoman with a fierce voice and fierce attitude to match.

Loud distorted screechy guitars are the main driving force behind this great band coupled with Wnedy's awesome vocals. This is a band that have the potential to be going places.

They have the power and aggression of a band that have been around for decades not just a short time which is what this band have.

They have already supported ÆGES in their short lifespan.

So headover to BandCamp and the links below and check out a great rock band.
When these guys release a proper EP, Split or Full Length I will definitely be checking them out.

Great Stuff and Highly Recommended.

Make Them Your Swords is a fucking must for all of us Sludge Metallers. If your into Sunn0))), YOB and The Melvins then your going to truly dig this wonderful album.

It on for an action packed 60 minutes or so. Each song is on for about 8 mins or so. So you know your in for an epic ride of sublime distorted long drawn out Drone/Doom/Sludge Metal Riffs.

The production is superb on this and Matt deserves high praise for this indeed. It's one of the freshest and loudest debut albums I have heard this year. Fucking brutal stuff from a talented artist.

Akem Manah - Night Of Black Moon Review

Akem Manah is a Death/Doom Metal Band from Eugene, Oregon, USA

Akem Manah is a head-banging genre defying Metal Band who mix Doom, Death, Sludge and even Psych Rock to a truly wondrous effect.

They have just released their brilliant new album – The Night Of The Black Moon. An 8 song and 71 minute colossal epic of haunting Death/Doom riffs.

Like the recent Undersmile amazing album Narwhal. This is one album that is truly hard to define so I apologize to the band if I don’t do this great album justice. As I can’t put into words the true feeling of this brutal and heavy album.

The album has its fair share of epic tracks. Some run for 9 to 10 mins. It even includes a brilliant 20 minute epic – “Into The Darkness” which will leave you breathless for days.

The band are all master musicians as they play some of the catchiest riffs I have ever heard for a Doom/Death Metal Band. The keyboards are a wonderful touch that bring a sense of awe and wonder at times. Especially on track – The Dead Man’s Heart.

This is the first time I have had exposure to this great band I know they have a great reputation amongst the Doom/Sludge Metal fraternity. And it’s not hard to see why. These guys are masters at combining the Doom/Death/Sludge genres and crafting it into something you don’t hear much of these days.

The vocals are just plain brutal at times and adds the harsh overtones that a great Death Metal album needs. But they are vocals you can understand. Well I could anyway.

Other great tracks to check out are Return To Funeralopolis and The Dark Hours. The song titles really do match the eerie sombre mood the band is trying to portray. But these guys never forget about the power of the riff. And this album has it in spades.

Even with the epic running time of 70 mins or so, this album is never boring or frustrating. It’s a true blast of top-notch Doom/Death/Sludge Metal riffs with a great Psych Rock/Metal vibe to it all.

It’s brilliantly produced and is an album that you will be coming back to time and time again. Akem Monah should be applauded for releasing a challenging album that will take multiple listens to get the full picture of this epic odyssey.

One of the finest Doom/Death Metal albums I have heard in years. This album deserves as much praise it can possibly get. Highly Recommended.

20 Questions with Vulture

Vulture 2012

So Sludgeheads, it is your lucky day, because we have another exclusive interview for you.  This time with another awesome band, this time from Pittsburgh, USA.  It is the mighty, Vulture!

I for one use different methods of discovering new bands and when it comes to this band, I stumbled upon them, on everybody's favourite social network.  The excellent Doom Stoner & Sludge fb page to be precise.  They often recommend bands and this is how the band came to my attention.  I mailed them and the rest, as they say is history.

Oblivious to Ruin, Vulture's debut full length is a phenomenal record and if you haven't heard it already, you really need to rectify that immediately.  It is widely acclaimed and you can read my review here.

Anyway, I was keen to get them to talk to us about all things, Vulture.  So here is what their drummer, Kelly Gabany had to say, when I fired 20 questions at her.
Hey Kelly, thanks for talking to me and more importantly The Sludgelord readers.
You're another great discovery this year and your new record is amazing.   For those people who are unfamiliar with your band, tell me a little bit about the history of the band? Where you're from, band members, when you formed?
Thanks for the kind words! Our line-up since late May 2009 is myself (drums), Garrett Twardesky (guitar), Gene Fikhman (guitar), Justin Erb (vocals) and Justin Bach (bass). Garrett and I formed Vulture back in 2007.  Buddy Smith (original singer) knew us from the Pittsburgh scene and was interested in joining a new project.  We knew Bach mutually through house shows that his former band, No Room To Breathe, used to put on.  Buddy brought in Gene to complete the line-up.
We recorded a 3 song demo with our friend; Complete Failure’s James Curl, at our rehearsal space and started playing shows. We met the late Cory Smoot (GWAR) when we opened for his side project, Mensrea, in Pittsburgh and he suggested we record at his studio down in Richmond, VA. After we got some funds together, we recorded our self-titled EP with Cory and Mensrea drummer, Dave Gibson, in the late summer of 2008.
We continued playing shows and started to write new material.  The songs were getting slower, darker and sludgier.  We could tell Buddy really wasn’t into the new direction. We all knew the end was drawing near with him.
The ironic thing here is, if it wasn’t for Buddy, we would probably have never have known Erb.  We met Erb when we started playing some gigs with his band, Reduce To Ash.  Buddy was friends with their guitarist, Quinn Lukas, and put some shows together.  Garrett and Erb became friends and long story short, eventually Erb became Buddy’s replacement.
The first song we recorded with Erb was “Prick of Misery” back in February 2011 for Innervenus’ “Iron Atrocity Vol. I” compilation.
Is the band a full time project?
In terms of it being the only band I am in? Then yes.  Unfortunately I don’t have time for other projects other than Vulture.  This is the only project for Bach as well.  Erb is currently recording with Reduce To Ash and playing acoustic shows with Quinn (Reduce To Ash, Icarus Witch) under the name Sacred Smoke.  Garrett and Gene have a death metal project, Grisly Amputation, whose debut album should be coming out soon.  In terms of it being a full time job? Then No, We all have full time jobs or are in school.
Where did the name Vulture come from?
Well, when Garrett and I were starting this project, we wanted something simple and straight to the point.  I was listening to A Life Once Lost’s “Vulture” and thought ‘That’s it’!  It’s dirty, grimy and you can’t really mess it up, like our old band, Shipwreck I Promised. Haha.
How would you describe your sound?
Heavy, groovy, gritty, nasty, dare I say, sometimes catchy?
Is there a rock/metal scene in your hometown?
I think our metal scene here in Pittsburgh is pretty healthy.  There’s a lot of a lot of camaraderie with helping each other out and supporting for the most part.  Innervenus has had a hand in a lot of that with the “Iron Atrocity” compilation series.  We’ve met some great bands/people through our involvement with that.
What's it like being a rock/ metal band there? Is it a struggle?
It can be.  You can’t play Pittsburgh too much.  However, this summer is a bit of an exception for us.  Our tour plans fell through so we are helping out some touring bands with shows here.   Its slim pickings’ for sludge/doom bands in this town, we try to help out as much as possible.
What are your influences musically and artistically?
Musically I am all over the place.  I’ve always been into a wide variety of music.  In a nutshell, it ranges from Duran Duran to Electric Wizard. Artistically, I am really into what our artist, Chris Smith, is doing.  He’s been responsible for our imagery from the start and never ceases to blow me away with his work. Check out his gallery at www.burzum.deviantart.com
Were  you in a band before Vulture, who were they and what were they like and how has your style changed since then?
I’ve been in numerous bands back in the day, but Garrett and I were in a band more recently prior to Vulture called Shipwreck I Promised. It angled more towards the hardcore end of things. My style as a drummer hasn’t changed much, still a straight forward, heavy hitting groover. James Curl, currently of Complete Failure, was our bass player in Shipwreck and is responsible for the recording of Vulture’s debut full length.
Your record is your 1st full length, do you feel it is your best work and why? You proud of it?
It most definitely is our best work and we are very proud. It is very real, raw, warts and all. It’s us jamming in a room. The only overdubs were in the vocals and a couple of guitar solos.
We have so much more confidence in the music and what Erb brings to the table vocally and lyrically. He brings the hurt.

Why should people buy your record?
Because we need money to record the next one!
Your record appears be getting a lot of good feedback? What are your thoughts? Are you pleased with it? Do People get what you’re trying to do?
I’m personally blown away with all of the positive feedback.  Honestly, I was nervous before it came out simply because I didn’t know how it was going to be received. Even though I am proud of it, I am still my own worst critic.
Do you and your band members contribute songs and arrangement ideas?
Garrett and Gene primarily write all of the riffs/arrangements. However, Bach wrote “Long I Crawl” that is on the album. If one of us, including myself, has an idea on an arrangement we’ll play it out and see if it works.
How did you hook up with the Innervenus label?
We met Scott Massie (HMFIC) when we played with his band, Storm King, which he fronts. This is back when Buddy was still our singer at the time. We developed a good relationship and since we played shows with Erb as our singer. He asked to be on the label’s “Iron Atrocity Vol. I” compilation.   Soon after the compilation came out, he approached us about releasing our full length on Innervenus.
What are your ambitions for the band?
To be able to write, record and get out on the road! To release something on vinyl would be top notch!
You got any interesting stories from your tours? Where you toured? Who with?
Unfortunately we haven’t been out on the road extensively yet. We’ve played one off shows out of state, but never fully toured. No matter where we play though, we ALWAYS have a blast. We love playing Ohio. We’ve made a ton of friends from that state. Mockingbird, Rue, Traitors Return To Earth, Lo-Pan, Before The Eyewall, DeathCrawl, Bridesmaid, Red Sun, The Ravenna Arsenal etc…
What are your immediate plans and plans for the future, any plans for new material?
We have commenced writing songs for an upcoming split with DeathCrawl to be released late in the year on Innervenus.  Not sure if it’s going to be a 7” split with one song or CD split with multiple songs.  We are just going to write and the rest will take care of itself.  I wouldn’t mind going the Hooded Menace route, writing/recording a bunch of songs just to use for splits.  I personally am a big fan of the split.  Found out about some awesome bands that way.
What you reckon to people downloading music for free? Would you consider releasing your album for free to get more people listening to your music?
This is a tough one.  At one end, you have a band, such as ourselves, on a smaller level, that just wants to be heard.  At the other end, you have a band, such as ourselves, that rely on album sales to continue to do what we do so it is kind of frustrating to see “Oblivious” on so many illegal download sites.  However, it is flattering that people think enough of it to post it and download worthy. It’s a double edged sword…  We still have recording budgets to meet.  I don’t foresee us releasing an album for free.  If we could record for free, perhaps.
I personally love the whole physical package.  The art, the liner notes, the actual CD. Our album art for “Oblivious To Ruin” is hand screened on a digipak and assembled by the hard working folks at The Innervenus Music Collective.  You can’t download that!
Any plans for shows in the UK?
Don’t think it’s in the band/label budget hahaha. It is on my personal bucket list to visit though!
Last question, you got anything you like to say to your fans?
Thank you for listening, reading and supporting!

Well, there you have it!  Very cool indeed.  A big big thank you to Kelly for being so courteous with her time and answering my dumb ass questions.  ha ha.    Also for initially providing their record so we could review it.   You are very gracious and it is very much appreciated.  I hope you, the readers had fun reading the interview.  Do yourselves a favour and spread the work about this awesome band.  You could also do one better and buy their album.  Check the links below for all the info.
