Gniyrg Gnaarg

The Acolytes Feel Sleepy cover art

Gniyrg Gnaarg are a Doom/Stoner Metal Band from Helsinki, Finland. Though they do feature a member originally from Spain.

The members are:

Tommy Tienhaara: Bass, vocals
Leo Niemi: Guitar, vocals
Ines Bermudez: Drums

Gniyrg Gnaarg have already provided me with an extensive bio on what their band and music stands for. Here it is.

"Gniyrg Gnaarg is a three-piece stoner/doom band from Helsinki, Finland. Born in 2009, we have released two demos; "From Mother Sun" (2010) and "The Acolytes Feel Sleepy" (2012) and played a handful of gigs in and around Helsinki.

Our music is a combination of Sleep and Black Sabbath influenced stoner rock and doom metal, with added hints of grunge, post rock, psychedelic rock, 80s metal and gothic metal stemming from each member's personal music tastes, melted together and refined by improvised jamming.

"The Acolytes Feel Sleepy" is our second demo, recorded at Crypt Studio, Helsinki, in April 2012. The first track, "Holothurian", is heavily influenced by ancient Japanese haikus about Holothurians (a.k.a. sea slugs), and is about an ancient chaos monk who tries to warn his nonchalant acolytes about imminent doom. "A Wizard?" is a short instrumental that works as an intro to the third track "Nay, a Prophet!", that tells the story about a prophet who has a vision of the depressing future of the world, but manages to see the bright side of it all in the end."

So what do I think of their latest release. The Acolytes Feel Sleepy. It’s a great release. If you’re a fan of the bands and genres mentioned above then this is some of the finest 20 minutes you will hear this week.

It’s loud from the word go and very psychedelic to boot. It’s already starting to appear on the other blogs and it’s not hard to see why.

It’s an excellent release that should find many fans here. I loved it as it has the Sleep type vibe with the guitars and vocals at times but the guys do add their own original vibe to show they have something to offer in the realm of Stoner/Doom Metal.

The band have kindly given me permission to give this away as a free download. So what your waiting for. Get downloading now!!!

Time to work on the full length record guys. You have me converted to your great music.

Highly Recommended.

Toundra are a top-notch Instrumental Sludge/Post-Metal band that incorporates Ambient and Post-Rock Music to great effect. If you’re into Pelican, Mono and Russian Circles then you going to love this band like I did.

I have been a fan for a few years. Since their 2010 second album – II. It was a great collection of Post-Metal tracks that showed what a great band Toundra are actually are.

Throw The Goat - Black Mountain Review

Black Mountain cover art

Throw The Goat is a Punk Rock/Stoner Metal Band from Idyllwild, California  USA

The members are:

Michael Schnalzer a.k.a. "Barba Rojo" - Bass, Lead Vox
Johnny Wilson a.k.a. "Johnny Trash" - Rhythm Guitar, Vox
Brian Parnell a.k.a. "Puke" - Lead Guitar, Vox
Tim Olivier a.k.a. "Señor Queso" - Drums

Throw The Goat are a high energy and fast & furious Punk Rock/Stoner Metal Band from a small town in California.Their bio should tell you the struggles they had to overcome to get their insane blend of great music to the masses …

"We're from a small town (population 3874) in the middle of nowhere, there's no scene for us where we live so we hustle our asses off playing dive bars to legendary venues around southern California and even toured down to Costa Rica last February. It's hard to find bands that "sound like us" so we just play with awesome rock, punk and metal bands - we've opened for Prong, Death By Stereo, D.I., Fireball Ministry and many others. We do this 100% on our own, completely independent. Our debut album Black Mountain, which we're releasing ourselves in a few weeks, can be streamed for free at: http://throwthegoat.bandcamp.com. It was produced by Alex Pappas from Finch."

Well Throw The Goat has unleashed their superb debut album onto the world. And what an album it is. Black Mountain is an 11 song and 41 minute blast of punk rock driven stoner metal riffs.

The album has been produced by Alex Pappas from post-hardcore heroes – FINCH.

Upon first listen you might think you have heard this style of songs before. You may have but give it a few more listens and these guys will have you rocking in time at all like they did with me.

Black Mountain showcases the band’s talents for writing high energy Punk Rock/Stoner Metal tracks with some great lyrics to match. What is original is the guys drive and creativity in delivering an action packed album full of great tracks that will get any party or crowd moshing to a great start.

Their might be no complex shredding prog riffs but these guys still know how to play a mean riff. .This album knows what it is and makes no qualms about it. It’s an unashamed album of great tracks to get the body pumping from start to finish.

Especially on great tracks like – Too Late, Last Call, Predictable, Excuses and I Always Lie.

The vocals are delivered with a great hardcore punk snarling edge but with the right amount emotion and self aware. You can tell these guys are mad at something and they want to let the whole world know. From a town with a small population the aggression was bound to built up to some of its town folk. And Thank The Metal Heavens that Throw The Goat were formed.

As this album is just a pure blast from start to finish. It has no hidden messages just straight in your face great punk rock/stoner metal songs we all need to rock out to time and time again.

Alex has done a brilliant job in producing this excellent album. You can hear every note played loud and thick that it vibrates brilliantly well when played loud.

It’s got a great DIY feel to it as well. It doesn’t feel polished like some major league bands. Just a hard working honest band playing their great music the way it’s supposed to be played. Raw, Angry and in your face.

The 40 minutes just flies by and this is an album that gets better witch each listen. Black Mountain should hopefully gain the band a bigger fan base as they are a hugely talented bunch of musicians.

OK 6 songs might have been on their debut EP which you can download for free. But they haven’t sounded as good as this. This is how the songs should have originally sounded. Alex has given the songs a fresh edge.

So all in all this is a great debut album that showcases what Throw The Goat is all about. And a band that includes an amazing drinking song - Havin A Beer - deserves to be heard as many people as possible.

You can buy this excellent album from BandCamp on Sept 11th. I recommend you all to check this great band now. You won’t be sorry.

Highly Recommended.

The Machine - Calmer Than You Are (Album Review)

The Machine is a three piece psychedelic stoner rock band from Rotterdam in The Netherlands. ‘Calmer Than You Are’ (Elektrohasch Records, 2012) is their fourth release, and what an album it is!

In terms of sound, this album is brilliantly experimental and psychedelic whilst managing to retain a great stoner rock feel. Listening to this band, I’m reminded of Queens of the Stone Age, but that’s only a rough guide to their sound for those who’ve never heard The Machine before, as these guys are pretty unique.

Whilst fans of the riff won’t be disappointed with this album, it’s worth pointing out that everything here is pretty ‘effects-laden’ and things can get quite psychedelic and trippy from time to time so if you are more just a straight up stoner rock fan, this might take some time getting used to. That said there’s a great mixture of stuff here and there’s something on this album for everyone.

The great thing about this band is that they don’t stick to the standard stoner rock formula. The chord progressions here are different and exciting and there are some brilliant progressive parts in the music.

Production wise this release is great. Even though the guitars and bass are quite low and fuzzy, they’ve got clarity, something you don’t always get with bands in this genre and it can sometimes detract from an otherwise great riff. The drums and vocals on this record are also nice and clear.

One of the standout tracks on this album is ‘Sphere (…or Kneiter)’. I can honestly say that this track had me truly awestruck. The Machine has essentially created ‘post-stoner rock’ with this track and it’s a masterpiece. The instrumentation here ebbs and flows like some sort of strange psychedelic tide, conjuring up some brilliant images of weird distant lands.

‘5&4’ is another killer track. This is probably the least psychedelic track on the album but it’s got a killer riff that makes it a great song in its own right. The song takes quite a regimented structure compared to some of the tracks on the album, but it’s that which makes it a great tune to split up all the psychedelic madness.

The last track, ‘Trailor’ is like a summation of every song that’s gone before it. It’s a really strange idea, but it works really well and it makes you want to go and listen to the whole album over again.

Basically, if you’re into your psychedelic rock, you’re not going to want to miss out on this great release.
