BUFFALO THEORY MTL - Heavy Ride Review

Image of BUFFALO THEORY MTL - Heavy Ride CD + poster & Bonus CD

BUFFALO THEORY MTL are a Stoner Metal Band from Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

The members are:

Anton Parr – vocals
Yannick Pilon – guitar & vocals
Pat Gordon – guitar
Gary Lyons – bass
Brian Craig - drums

This superb band has been featured before. Well the guys are back with their outstanding debut album - Heavy Ride. An 11-song and 40 minute collection of hard-hitting Stoner Metal riffs.

If your into Down, Kyuss, Sabbath and many other bands of that nature then you need this album right now.

The album comes out all guns blazing sublime title track - Heavy Ride and lets rip until the dying seconds.

The album has its fair share of great modern NOLA based riffs with the added great lead vocals of Anton who knows how to carry a song through.

Other standout tracks include - Monstro, Rites, Greed Indeed and A Thousand Times. Fuck it. All of the songs are great. There is not one bad track on this great album.

BUFFALO THEORY MTL might not be re-inventing the wheel but who cares. They know what to do and how to do it. And that is to rock the fuck out of any joint.

These guys have a well deserved reputation in their homeland but these collection of great tracks would go down a storm on any world stage. BUFFALO THEORY MTL can rock with the best of them. And they prove it with the tracks on show.here.

The guys have taken their time in releasing this album since their 2010 Demo. OK they have included the songs from the demo in here but they were never properly recorded. BUFFALO THEORY MTL have corrected this and the songs sound as good as ever.

The album is superbly produced and should enhance BUFFALO THEORY MTL reputation as a band to look out for in today's modern Stoner Metal Scene.

I have been following this band's progress for almost a year now. And I am happy to see their hard work has paid off as they will no doubt be getting a load of positive vibes for this great album. And its truly deserved.

All in all a fucking superb album by a great band and one I expect we will be hearing a lot more over the next few years.

You can buy this album from May 1st from all good stockists now. But if you cant wait then headover to Galy Records and buy this superb album now.

Highly Recommended.

-(16)- Deep Cuts From Dark Clouds (Album Review)

By: Aaron  Pickford

Album Type: Full Length
Date Released: 07/05/2012
Label: Relapse Records

‘Undeniable highlights are ‘Her Little “Accident” which also serves as the first video from the album, “Sad Clown” and “Ants in my Bloodstream where Cris Jerue and his band of nihilistic warriors appear to be content on initiating the Panzram choke hold.  Intent on inflicting a barrage of pain with seismic drum beats, courtesy of Mateo Pinkerton, unyielding bass from Tony Baumeister, and to top it off colossal riffs, complete with subtle and off-kilter nuisances from axe wielder Bobby Ferry.  This batch of songs are about as uncompromising as you’re ever likely to hear.’

‘Deep Cuts from Dark Clouds’ CD//DD//LP track listing:

The Review:

What is clear from the opening burst of riffs from album opener ‘Theme from a ‘Pill Popper’ is that -(16)-are about to take you on a journey of hate.    Playing an ugly, caustic and unrelenting blend of sludge metal, -(16)- appear to have thrown down the gauntlet and called their peers to arms.  ‘Deep Cuts From Dark Clouds’ will leave all the fakes and pretenders in their wake, and by taking delight in reaching their apex, they may have produced the definite album of their career. -(16)- front man Cris Jerue barks out on the album opener  ‘What went wrong, the sky turned grey’,  if the answer is a bad acid trip? That is a picnic in comparison to this record.  Perhaps that’s the point, -(16)- play a blend of dark and unsettling music that will no doubt serve to bewilder and delight fans alike.

Album tracks such as ‘Parasite and ‘Opium Hook’, with groovy and pulsating riffs, in addition to the misanthropic lyrics; invoke a disturbing portrayal of drug addiction, failed relationships and an underlying hatred of the world.  To quote Serial murderer Carl Panzram "I wish all mankind had one neck so I could choke it!" and -(16)- appear to intent on doing just that.

Undeniable highlights are ‘Her Little “Accident” which also serves as the first video from the album, “Sad Clown” and “Ants in my Bloodstream where Cris Jerue and his band of nihilistic warriors appear to be content on initiating the Panzram choke hold. This batch of songs are about as uncompromising as you’re ever likely to hear.

20 years on, -(16)- appear to be recharged, reinvigorated and ready to assume their rightful throne at the top of the sludge metal wasteland.  Largely outsiders, and on the periphery for years due the emergence of New Orleans scene, ‘Deep Cuts From Dark Clouds’ is a game changer and blows everything else out of the water.  Unyielding, unrelenting and inexorably stubborn -(16)- have finally arrived.

Enjoy! Because once you hear this record, and despite the pain being self inflicted, your compulsion to press the repeat button will be too great to resist.  Astonishing work of vitriolic splendour!  Buy immediately.

Buffalo Witch play a great blend of Doom/Sludge/Stoner with hard hitting vocals and powerful voice over effects to hypnotic effect.

Their S/T album is a 4 song and 35 minute blast of top-notch Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metal riffs. These guys throw in a great psych vibe to their music as well.

These guys sound like a louder and angrier version of Across Tundras at times. Especially on the 13 minute epic “Law Of The Land” which has a very haunting voiceover pitched against a brilliant Sludge/Stoner Metal riff that has you from the word go.

Buffalo Witch are brilliant musicians and prove this through out this great release. Its full of amazing riffs to get your teeth stuck into. This is truly exciting stuff from the word go. Its brilliantly produced and performed by all involved. If you’re a fan of bass driven Sludge/Stoner Metal then these guys are the ones for you. Tim used to be part of brilliant Sludge Metallers Head Of The Taurus who have sadly split up. Well he is now part of Abest who deliver their own brand of hard hitting Sludge Metal.

This is heavy from the word go. Abest mix Sludge, Hardcore and Post-Metal to brutal effect that will last long in the memory. If you want heavy pounding Atmospheric Sludge Metal with bleak hardcore vocals to match then Abest is the band for you.

They have just released their superb debut release - Demo 2012 – A 4 song 20 minute blast of top-notch Sludge/Post-Metal riffs that will have you hooked from the word go.

The opening riffs of opening track “Solando” had me hooked and kept me enthralled to the very end. Its full of sublime Sludge metal riffs with great vocals to match. A great start to a great release.

Up next is “Distant Hands Longing”. Another outstanding track which shows what this great band can do. Blending Sludge Metal with great Post-Rock/Post-Metal vibes aided along by superb vocals to match.

The other two tracks “Into Grey” and “The Fall” are other great tracks to make this a brilliant EP from a great band to keep an eye out for.

If your into the usual big hitters of Sludge/Post-Metal then Abest is the band for you. I am a bit saddened that Head Of The Taurus. Have split up but another brilliant band has risen from the ashes and they are a band I want to hear more of in the future.

GHOST TOWER

Ghost Tower are a Heavy/Doom/Thrash Metal from Nebraska, USA

The members are:

Ameven (vocals), Matt Preston (guitar, bass, keyboards, backing vocals)

They have just released their second brilliant album "Head of Night" in Feb 2012 for free download.

This album is personally recommended to me by Mari (legendary poster of Sludge Swamp) Sidd (Regular Viewer) and who designed the Sludgelord Blog Logo. So this was enough reason for me to download this brilliant album and should be for you too as well.

Head of Night is a mighty leap forward from their pervious great release "Curse Of The Black Blood". Everything about this album is better and heavier. Vocals, Riffs, Drumming all louder and angrier than before.

A brilliant 40 minutes that you will be going back to time and time again. Album is full of bleak down-tempo Sludge/Doom Metal riffs that will haunt you for many days to come.

The band have kindly to give this brilliant album away for free. I urge you all to download this superb album right away. You wont be sorry.

PIKE - To Cross The Great Divide Review

To Cross the Great Divide Cover Art

Pike are a Sludge Metal Band from Sweden

The members are:

Alex Risberg - Bass/Vocals
Erik Palm - Guitar
Alvin Risberg - Drums

Pike play a brilliant blend of Sludge, Stoner, Doom and even Post-Metal that is really hard to categorize at times. They have just released their brilliant debut full length album – “To Cross The Great Divide”. A 5 song 50 minute opus of hard hitting riffs.

These guys take influence from a whole range of bands such as Mastodon, Sleep, YOB, ISIS, Pelican and Neurosis but put a unique fresh spin on things with their own blend of top-notch atmospheric sludge based vibes.

Make no question about it. To Cross The Great Divide is a masterpiece. Its expertly written and played by all involved. This is an album that ticks all the right boxes in the realm of Atmospheric Sludge Metal.

Full of passionate vocals and lyrics that paints a haunting atmosphere to go along side the brutal riffs on show. All of the 5 songs here are simply superb. They are epic slabs of giant colossal Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metal riffs.

Most of the tracks run past the 9 min and 10 minute mark. One of them “At The End Of Existence” runs past the 13 minute mark. I love epic tracks that Pike have created as the songs take their time in building the atmosphere and astounding the listener with to include as many hard hitting riffs as possible.

If I have to pick my fave track it will have to be the epic 11:32 minute track – “Ned Land”. as it tells a truly haunting and intriguing story with brilliant lyrics to match the sublime riffs. This packs an almighty punch so much so your jaw will be hitting the floor at how amazing this album is.

The production is amazing. You can hear every note, riff, rhythm played to loud shattering brilliance.

Pike have released a couple of EP’s before this outstanding release which are worth checking out as well. But its this monumental release where the band come into their own. This is the album that should rightly put Pike on the Sludge Metal Map.

This is an album you will be listening to over and over again. Pike have delivered a truly outstanding album that rightly deserves its place as my one of my fave albums of the year so far.

I have a feeling this album will be receiving a lot more praise before the year is out. As it’s simply a classic album that Pike should rightly be proud of.

Well as you can tell I absolutely love this album and is the best album I have bought this year. I urge you all to buy this now from BandCamp right now. You wont be sorry.

Highly Recommended – What Do You Think!!!
