Burning Full Throttle

On the 15th of november 2013 the hungarian stoner/drive rock band, Burning Full Throttle released their first album, called ’No Man’s Land’. This material contains 8 washed-in-fuzz, road-eating tracks which were recorded in Perfect Noise Recording Studio by Mátyás Koncz. The full album can be found on the band’s Soundcloud page, and it will also be available for downloading and in CD format.

Biography

This dirty, garage rock band was founded in 2005 in a basement in Kőbánya, Budapest, Hungary. After some gigs the band had the chance to show the smell of burning tire in Germany, but even this tour was not enough to hold the band together and they closed the door of their basement for some time. Since 2010 the band has been very active, which led to their album in november 2013 called ’No Man’s Land’. Béla Badarász, who played the rythm guitar on the album has left after the recording and was replaced by the former Düne guitarist/vocalist Csaba Mundi.

Oh Hell Yeah!!! - Now here is a brilliant Stoner Rock album to check out packed full of great riffs to rock out to. Burning Full Throttle are a band you need to check out now as their debut album - No Man's Land is fucking superb.

30 mins of in-your-face action packed riffs to slay you with. Once this album starts then it's time to buckle up as Burning Full Throttle are going to take you on a hell of a ride.

First track - The One To Blame - shows you what this band can do. Blazing riffs with superb grizzled vocals adding a real sense of danger to proceedings. It's been a long time since I have listened to a pure Stoner Rock album like this. Just like the brilliant album cover this album comes at you at over 100mph. These dangerous outlaws have a job to do and that's to rock the fuck out.

They have plenty more great tunes to entertain you with such as No Man's Land, The Flight, Downtown Paradise and my fave No Sleep Till Mexico. Burning Full Throttle are definitely influenced by the legendary Desert Rock Scene and bands such as Kyuss, Fu Manchu, Fatso Jetson and other bands of that ilk. Plus I can hear a slight Clutch influence as well.

Look this album is just one excellent ride into Stoner Rock Heaven. You want riffs from a band who know how to rock the fuck out. Well No Man's Land is the album for you. What's even better is the band have this available for free download on Soundcloud now. So headover there and download this brilliant album now. You really don't have no excuse to pass this by.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

Philip Weller - Top 25 Albums of 2013

Phil Weller’s Top 25 Albums of 2013

Music is very personal thing. When every year concludes, journalists and fans alike compile their definitive lists of the year gone by. From person to person, those lists will differ. Likewise, from person to person, opinions of other people’s lists will be just as unique. Yet, someone will only disagree with a list because they care about music, because they’re passionate about a certain record and feel it needs more credit than it’s received. So, without further ado, here’s my top 25 albums of 2013.

25) Ghost – Infestissumam

24) Fantasist – Fantasist

23) Windhand – Soma

22) Chron Goblin – Life For The Living

21) Kadavar - Abra Kadavar

20) Karnivool – Asymmetry

19) In Solitude – Sister

18) DevilDriver – Winter Kills

17) Noctum – Final Sacrifice

16) Ihsahn - Das seelenbrechen

15) Haken – The Mountain

14) Megadeth – Super Collider

13) Avatarium – Avatarium

12) Queens of the Stone Age – Like Clockwork

11) Vista Chino – Peace

10) Tracer – El Pistolero

Australian stoner rock with a little help from Kevin Shirley.

9) Alice In Chains – The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here

Stone may just be the riff of the year

8) Trivium – Vengeance Falls

Not strictly sludge, but a fine return to form.

7) Dream Theater – Dream Theater

Petrucci and Rudess steal the show.

6) Clutch – Earth Rocker

No frills, just brilliance

5) Rob Zombie - Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor

Arguably Rob Zombie’s best record to date. He also coats a Grand Funk classic in dirty sludge.

4) Sisare – Nature’s Despair

Prog rock from Finland, it absorbs you in its lulling beauty and visceral riffs.

3) Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats – Mind Control

Diverse and utterly stunning.

2) Black Sabbath – 13

The original godfathers lead by example

1) Motörhead – Aftershock

A simply flawless record, Aftershock sees Motörhead at their best once more, Lemmy’s bass tone is mud thick.

Bio :

The new full-time project fronted by ex-Morbid Angel bassist/vocalist Steve Tucker, WARFATHER sees Tucker back to fronting a death metal outfit after over a decade since his departure from Morbid Angel, and over two years since his participation as a vocalist and writer in the well-received Nader Sadek project. On the impending attack, Tucker states, “I am stoked about WARFATHER and our first album! WARFATHER is more than just a metal band; it is a belief system and a meeting of the minds, the ones that can see what is truly happening in the times we are living in. Orchestrating The Apocalypse is a warning to the eyes that choose to be blind, and a call to arms to the minds that do feel the coming changes. It is pure blackened, apocalyptic death metal. Fuck religion, fuck the government! This is their apocalypse. Our time is NOW!”

Orchestrating The Apocalypse brutalizes in a relentless style that builds on the work laid on the three Tucker-fronted Morbid Angel albums --Formulas Fatal To The Flesh,Gateways To Annihilation andHeretic -- resounding with over forty minutes of pure American death metal.WARFATHER delivers an intense, debilitating performance that should no doubt please fans of Morbid Angel, Nile, and Behemoth, while also sporadically infusing unique even bizarre atmospheric elements, elevating the album to a cutting-edge status. The album was recorded and mixed at Cincinnati-based TME studios by Steve Tucker and mastered by Maor Applebaum at Maor Applebaum Mastering, and is now confirmed for release via Greyhaze Records on January 21, 2014in North America, with a European release date to be announced in the coming weeks. The album's cover artwork was constructed by Ken Coleman.

The Band :

Steve Tucker | guitar, vocals
Avgvstvs | bass
Armatura | guitars
Deimos | drums

Review :

Steve Tucker, ex of Morbid Angel fame is back with Warfather. It is many years now since he left Morbid Angel but if you were waiting for him to return to death metal (Nader Sadek notwithstanding) then this record will please you immensely. Opening as it does with blasting drums- apparently using a snare the size of a can of tuna and recorded in a tiny sound proofed cupboard offset against rumbling toms and clicking bass drums- it is clear that the shadow cast by Formulas Fatal To The Flesh has not yet been outrun. Quite simply this is atonal and brutal death metal.

Whirlwind fast and with odd angular riffing, the record continues at pace with “Legions” with appropriate marching paced chorus section and then swirling lead breaks. “My Queen Shall Not Be Mourned” is again brutal death metal with a fantasy theme. There are some unusual touches here and there with time changes over a lovely lead melody and choral vocals (yes, really) and it is this type of thing which elevates the album above technically proficient but predictable death metal fare.  There is even a kind of blackened quality to the guitar work in places and the drums are expertly handled and very tech-y. Tucker plays guitar here instead of handling bass and he does a very fine job.

The album also has little interludes- a nod to yesteryear, perhaps?- that add to the ebb and flow of the album and allow for a little light amongst the shade. "The Shifting Poles” has an unusual arrangement to it that is stop start and carries lightning fast changes. “Waltz Of The Solstice” swiftly runs through the riffs with again choral vocals in the background- nice touch- before thrash alternates with blast for the verses.

“Ageless Merciless” could actually sum up the album and Tucker's overall sound, but instead it serves a fine title for a another rapid fire slice of death with unusual guitar progressions that make full use of the twin set-up and allow for some excellent  trading. “Gods and Machines” features a very cool opening ascending (and finger twisting) riff before slowing for the verse and then taking off again- naturally. The constant tempo changes are a feature of the record and demonstrate the dexterity that it takes to achieve all those changes and still allow the songs to flow. No mean feat. Superb leads in this one, too.

“Ashes and Runes” is a more straightforward (in its approach, that is) proposition. Fast to slow and back to VERY fast with the drums. Mournful lead work compliments the fury of the verses well. The blasting is top notch on this one- very dexterous indeed.

“We Are The Wolves” is the albums coup de grace and goes for all out aggression. Lots of changes abound, lots of riffs whip up a tempestuous guitar storm while Tucker shreds his throat and goes all out.

Suffice it to say, if you liked Morbid Angel's output with Tucker, if you like DM with lots of changes and if you are a serious death head, then this is for you. If you have only a passing interest in the genre... ease yourself in before listening to this or you will find yourself bewildered! Such is the complexity of what is on offer here. Try and keep up!

Review :

When Eric and Brian Hoffman left Deicide back in 2004, many wondered if they would re-surface. Now they have, and a most welcome return they make. The leads are back, the riffs are back, the armour is back. Amon is back!

First things first, this is brutal stuff. If you were expecting a re-tread of the first Deicide album (of which the Hoffman's wrote a great deal) or even of the rough and ready “Amon: Feasting The Beast” release... think again. “Among Us” kicks things off. It is fast and furious, the riffs snake around, the fret boards get shredded and live sounding drums get a real hammering. The vocals are low and growled, not screechy, and the band really summons up a cacophonous noise. “Eye of The Infinite” continues this pummelling tradition with blast beats and Morbid Angel like rhythms to the drums and vocal lines. “Lash thy Tongue and Vomit Lies” offers impossibly precise guitar work and a frenzied approach.

The title track is up next and “Liar In Wait” does not disappoint. Many cymbals get battered as the band whips up a storm over numerous time changes and the kind of odd, lurching grooves that DM fans from the early 90's will instantly enjoy. “Reaching For Flesh” is also deeply unpleasant- the riffs and rhythms coming so thick and fast it is hard to follow without listening to it on headphones.  Superb lead work on this one too- Eric was generally regarded as the more masterful player in Deicide, but I can't recognise the styles per se. I recognise quality when I hear it, mind, and this is excellent.

“Semblance of Man” is the longest cut on the record- but fear not; the fury does not dissipate even for a moment. Warp speed is reached here in places, along with chugging sections that get the head nodding. “Sentience and Sapience” is oddly catchy in places; the snaking riffs leave an impression, coming as they do in the midst of a maelstrom. “Spat Forth From The Darkness” is perhaps the closest the band come to the brother's former outfit but is not ineffective or pale by comparison. It is still much more tech-focussed than Benton's men, though, and much more challenging to listen to. “Wraith of Gaia” is the last song here and it ups the twiddly riff quotient even further.

The bottom line here is that the Hoffman brothers are indeed back. If you want brutal tech-death, then you have found the album you need. After listening to this, I need a break from heaviness and may have to put a bit of folk on. Furious and demanding death metal.

Noothgrush / Coffins – Split 12" (Review)

Album Type : Split
Date Released : 25/11/2013
Label : Southern Lord

NOOTHGRUSH / COFFINS – SPLIT, album track listing :
1). Noothgrush – Humandemic 03:26
2). Noothgrush – Jundland Wastes 04:55
3). Noothgrush – Thoth 09:01
4). Coffins – Drown in Revelation 06:24
5). Coffins – The Wretched Path 05:23

Review :

This will probably be the last split of the year that I do (apart from my world famous Christmas with Van Damme impression), and even among the company it'll keep in a year of monumental split releases it's still pretty damn special. I reviewed the latest Coffins record from earlier this year, and I loved it so much that it landed on my top 25 for 2013. When you add Noothgrush into the fray you know it's gonna go off like some kind of doom cherry bomb in an unsuspecting toilet. It'll be loud, noisy and more than likely a filthy experience.

It does not fail to impress.

When it comes to the Noothgrush tracks on display here (3 of the total 5), theirs is a less death and doom hybrid affair when compared to Coffins. Obviously still sounds deranged and choking, but a more classic unit by comparison. So begins 'Humandemic', with full on Sabbath style mood. Of course it isn't long before those sick grooves start to roll forth from the speakers. This kind of sludged up repetition of a fine riff is real meat and potatoes stuff, born of disappointment, regret and late nights in holes with whisky soaked clothes. All the truly fulfilling stuff that life can provide. It's a heavy jam, raw and blurry around the edges, and I love it.

The Coffins tracks are filled with more of that truly vicious style that was inflicted upon my ears to full effect on 'The Fleshland'. Like a far chuggier Autopsy, they plough forward like a tank in a field of assorted skulls, and 'Drown In Revelation' wastes very little time in establishing it's dominance. Zero fucking about, even the intro oozes absolute menace. And then it rips into some of the most obnoxiously loud and heavy riffing ever. Those skins sound like the birthing of spiteful cosmic entities; entirely lacking any forgiveness or remorse, and huge in every aspect. They are the very definition of brutal, and in an age where that word gets bounced around an awful lot, please believe me when I tell you that I am most definitely not exaggerating here.

Their other cut and closer of all festivities is 'The Wretched Path'. If anything a more straightforward and I do hesitate to say this, possibly upbeat side of Coffins is dragged out for your consideration. Don't get me wrong, it's hardly Kumbaya around a campfire, but it does almost channel the spirit of 'Holy Mountain' era Sleep, at least to this listener. Of course after you apply generous amounts of gargled vocals and lashings of malice it is a Coffins track, but there is far more groove up for grabs than you would normally expect. And they accomplish it with gusto, bobbing along at a rocking pace, kicking out a hideous jam. It's a sexy sounding slice of doom-mongering, and I heartily approve.

This is another vital split acquisition for this year of 2013. It probably won't shock you to hear that this is being put out on Southern Lord either, who went a whole 12 months without letting me down at all. Two great bands, one great split, flawless victory. Get your filthy paws on this tremendous tag team of despair today, lest you regret it tomorrow.

Integrity - Systems Overload (A2/Orr+ Mix) (Album Review)

Album Type : Full Length
Date Released : 29/11/2013
Label : Magic Bullet Records/Organized Crime Records

SYSTEMS OVERLOAD (A2/Orr+ Mix), track listing :
01. Incarnate 365
02. No One
03. Systems Overload
04. Armenian Persecution
05. Grace of the Unholy
06. Forevers Horizon
07. Mediator
08. Salvation’s Malevolence
09. Fading Away
10. Jimson Isolation
11. The Screams
12. Search for Divinity
13. Unveiled Tomorrows

Bio :
One of the most vicious and iconic hardcore albums ever, Systems Overload was initially released by Victory Records in 1995, elevating INTEGRITY to a whole new level of international notoriety, yet due to rushed/confused mixing sessions, the final product bore a more modern metallic hardcore sound than the band intended. In 2012, former INTEGRITY guitarist Aaron Melnick and current guitarist Robert Orr collaboratively took on a mission to bring forth the true vision of Systems Overload LP forth. Unearthing the initial masters from the extensive recording sessions, the guitarists from two different eras of the band pulled elements of alternate takes of the songs to a new level, incorporating new contributions from both Melnick and Orr with lost solos and divebombs. The new mix showcases a much more organic and haphazardly raw side of this timeless album -- bearing fan favorites like the opening track “Incarnate 365,” the rabid “Armenian Persecution,” the plodding “Jimson Isolation” and the enduring title anthem -- the dark, visionary brutality of the initial recording is retained, but the band’s punk and Japanese hardcore influences erupt forth with new vitality, and includes liner notes from both Melnick and Orr on the process of putting the album together.

Magic Bullet will plague humanity with the CD issue of the A2/Orr+ mix of Systems Overload on November 29th, 2013. The release will come less than two months from the day INTEGRITY’s iconic lineup from the early-mid ‘90s, including the Systems Overload album, reunites for the first time in twenty years. Vocalist Dwid Hellion, bassist Leon Melnick, drummer Mark Konopka and guitaristsAaron Melnick and Chris Smith will also be joined by current INTEGRITY lead guitarist Robert Orr on stage at the A389 X Bash in Baltimore this January 17th and 18th in Baltimore, Maryland to perform an exclusive historic one-off set at the massive event. The Bash will also include special performances by Bloodlet, All Out War, Infest, Haymaker, Empire Of Rats, Noisem, Full Of Hell and many others

Review :

This is a somewhat interesting concept: original version of landmark hardcore album is released way back when by Victory (in the mists of 1995), gets rushed through mixing stages and turns out more metallic in nature than the band would have apparently liked. Last year a guitarist from that era (Aaron Melnick) teamed up with the current guitarist (Robert Orr) to dust off the original masters and to attempt to bring forth the true vision of what Integrity wanted when they recorded and then released 'Systems Overload'. They have also both added fresh and lost parts to the final product to enhance the way the album sounds.

And honestly, it sounds pretty fuckin' righteous.

NOTE: I am approaching this record from a virginal stance, so I can only give my opinion on this current rendition. But what a rendition it is. 'Incarnate 365' is a complete HxC ripper, overflowing with attitude and swagger. I love the degree of musicality that Integrity bring to the table for a hardcore band, as I have mentioned in past reviews of their stuff. Never stifled or uncreative, all of their stomp is peppered with real musicianship. Solos that will make your toes curl, and a dark side that lies beneath. This track in particular highlights all the fundamental things that make Integrity the bomb.

The bass on 'No One' is tremendous, layered on thick and lush. The guitars keep up the tempo too, and those drums are breakneck. They lock it down like pit-starting royalty here, and Dwid's vocals are some of the most impressive in the game. He has more heart than a butcher's back room.

'Armenian Persecution' shows off to some degree the lighter flair that the band can be famous for. Some nice 80s metal quality intro, with layered guitars and soloing. The production is raw enough throughout the record to keep it sharp where it should be, and on quieter moments it enhances the moody feel. The contrast between the two clashes on this cut when it explodes into life, just buzz saw riffs and off the hook aggression. Tremendous.

'Mediator' is mid-paced to start, and a great way to get any room moving. But it's purely warm up stuff, as it decides to angrily break its foot off in your ass with some vicious, lightning riffery. The truly old school beatdown at the end would surely be a dirty, sweaty spectacle to behold in a live setting (*adds 'watch Integrity' to bucket list*).

Like I said earlier, I can only comment on this latest version of 'Systems Overload'. I imagine that the original is killer, but I can only guess that this is an improvement. Very little here doesn't contribute to the whole, or make for anything less than essential listening for any fan of rugged and real hardcore. This is the way this record was meant to be, and you can hear the love and urgency in it every step of the way. If you're a fan of the original it'll be an interesting proposition, but if you're new to it then I cannot stress how much you need to hear this. Make it happen.

Ghold - Galactic Hiss (Review)

Album Type : EP
Date Released : 28/10/2013
Label : Baitin’ The Trap Records

GALACTIC HISS, track listing :
1).  This Suffering Must End (14:08)
2).  Elvira (5:54)
3).  Grievous Practioner (4:10)

The Band :

Aleksandr Wilson | Bass and grunts
Paul Antny | Drums and chants

Review :

Now this was a real treat. Ghold hail from London, and play some kind of (even more than normally) low-end dominated doom sludge. After listening to their new EP 'Galactic Hiss' it left me pretty floored with the pure weight of the product at hand. I then discovered that there are only two of them, and that they are a bass and drum duo. Now while that started to make sense, it still can't explain how they manage to be just that damn heavy. Other than some kind of infernal accord having been struck up. Whatever the case is, skill or damned
handshake, I still feel  like it's me that has won here somehow.

'This Suffering Must End' is epic. You're always gonna run the risk with this kind of outfit, there is the potential to limit interest or to leave yourself open to accusations of gimmickry. But Ghold always manage to sidestep that particular problem, and they always keep the 14+ minutes of this track appealing and varied. Lots of fuzz and an admittedly generous build resides within, but it's never to mask anything at all and is completely integral to the overall quality of the tune. Focusing on what they have as opposed to what they don't, the bass is always HUGE and sounds stunningly fat throughout. Twinned with a solid backbeat, this is unmissable stuff.

'Elvira' brings the funk somewhat, and ups the pace entirely. The vocals are really good on this record too, that kind of chanted variation, somewhat akin to Jon Paul Davis of the mighty Conan. This is a far more trimmed and straightforward affair than the previous track, but the added groove doesn't dim or lighten the impact at all. It's still gloriously heavy, and effortlessly cool.

Rounding things out with 'Grievous Practitioner', the boys drive events home with an energy filled start and a bellowing finale. That bass emphasis certainly comes into its own here when the track starts to collapse in the middle, it captures the perfect sound and feel for orchestrated chaos. Like a structure of some kind collapsing in on itself.

'Galactic Hiss' is two guys making a lot of noise that should realistically be outside of their human capabilities. They lose nothing by not having a guitarist though, and if anything they seem even heavier as a consequence. A truly exciting prospect to listen to, Ghold have certainly won themselves over a new fan right here. Go pick this up right now.
