Live Review : Kylesa, Sierra, Jagged Vision, Krokodil, The Brudenel, Leeds, UK, 31/1/2014

It’s the end of the week, Friday does cometh; unfortunately so does the traditional English weather.  6 hours of solid rain.  Never the greatest motivation to head up the M1 motorway at the best of times, but given severe weather warnings, there needs to be a good reason to head up north, putting my faith in public transport too, no less.  At the end of the day, the decision was made easy, that reason, Kylesa!!

3 hours later, a brief detour home, one bus, one coach, sodden shoes and a taxi rider later, I arrive at The Brudenel Social Club, Leeds.  The added incentive, getting to meet my fellow sludgelordian and resident Kylesa fan boy and reviewer, Matt Fitton and his lovely wife.

The Brudenel, is every inch a social club, resident lounge bar resembling the old working men’s club of yore, your favourite ales on tap and possibly even some pork scratchings too.  The venue itself, exudes an old school blues bar vibe, exposed brick wall on the stage with ‘The Brudenel’ emblazoned on the wall, it feels a venue with history and more importantly that all important ‘vibe’.

With the first beer of the evening in hand, the band Krokodil a late addition to the bill kick things of in caustic fashion.  Featuring current Canaya (local to Leeds) vocalist, ex – members of A, Hexes, Gallows and SiKTH, most notably current Radio 1 Rock show mainman, Daniel P. Carter on guitar, they are welcome addition.  Mastering the art of the chugging riff and with groove in abundance, Krokodil produce a scintillating display, with the vocals being at the heart of everything good, splicing a growled and screamed approach which, if you know Canaya is of the highest order.  The biggest compliment I could give is that if music had been available it would have been purchased.  Amazing breakdowns certainly got you chest beating hard, the only disappointment for me was that they were not given the main stage in which to unleash the full range of their arsenal.  Credit where credit is due though, these dudes travelled a long way to get here today and they delivered a stellar performance and left me thirsty for more.  Do yourselves a favour check out this snapping Krokodil.  Indeed, check out the band Canaya too.

Next up is the Norwegian Band, Jagged Vision, a blend of hardcore and stoner rock, signed to the Retro Futurist Label.  So what bang, do we get for our buck? For me, having only listened to their debut record, Harvest Earth briefly, I really didn’t know how the band would translate to the stage, indeed the record left me a little lukewarm.  Tonight, however Jagged Vision, with their mix of hardcore, punk and stoner rock came out all guns blazing.  Vocals were vehemently belted out and the musicianship was faultless, indeed the crowd took awhile to warm up to them but I could not fault the commitment of the band.  Gracious in their thanks to crowd, an endearing quality in my eyes, Jagged Vision seemed at ease on stage, exuding confidence, bucketfuls of swagger and a riff quota high and heavy.  Delicious.

Sierra are next up, having not heard their blend of rock, I was reliably informed by present company that they deal in psychedelic stoner rock with a modicum of prog thrown into the mix.  What was apparent from the outset was the depth and range of their songs, at the hard of which were riffs, bone crunching riffs.  I’m talking ‘Vote with a Bullet’ crunch.  Ya dig!  Sierra for me was a real highlight, 3 dudes, the amps and fucking great songs. Ripping songs!! Front man Jason Taylor caressing his Gibson Les Paul, like a mother with their new infant baby and just the same amount of love and affection.  There is also something to be said about a bass player, doing it like Geezer, Robbie Carvalho his fingers like a plectrum, giving that warm and generous tone to the songs. No gimmicks, just the power kicking you in the gut.  Awesome stuff.  The prog element of their songs, is the expansive tone of the music, rich and varied, the riff quota per song is high, with some masterful lead breaks too.   The track PSeptember was the high point of their set for me, ferocious riffs which would make Zakk Wylde blush.  Crushingly heavy and just good old fashioned groove in abundance, the ebb and flow of the band was seamless and just a delight to watch.

The headliners from Savannah, Georgia finally hit the stage long into the evening.  All is forgiven though, as soon as they open up with a pulsating rendition of Scapegoat.  Whilst far from an expert on this band, Kylesa couldn’t have got it more right in terms of opening up the show.  Static Tensions is the record that hooked me into this band around 5 years and their best record IMO, dealing as it does in tight sludgy riffs and the dual vocals of Pleasants and Cope, this is a crushing start to their 14 song set.

For me, tonight is all about the percussion and drums. It is often overlooked or perhaps it is due to lack of effect on record, but the presence of two drummers on stage, just add further depth to their songs, indeed the intricacy and timing of both is mind blowing.  A real highlight was the brief drum solo from Carl McGinley (drums), Eric Hernandez (drums), and it just drew me in and had me and the crowd eating out of the palm of their hands.  There are not many bands, who boast this kind of dual drum approach, but it just reminded me of early Neurosis, or the more tribal aspects of Sepultura, say Ratamahatta. Amazing to witness and those guys are just phenomenal, adding so much more to their live show.  Unspoken is up next, one of the stronger tracks from their latest record, but in my opinion, it strayed a little too far away from their traditional sludge sound, though it is another great track tonight.

If one criticism could be levelled at the band tonight, it did seem on occasion, the set was so nailed down, it seemed a little too clinical.  In addition, the guitars, specifically that of Pleasants was very low in the mix and barely audible at times, though that is a minor gripe.  Hollow Severer and Nature’s Predators were vehemently dispatched and then we get the first taste of Spiral Shadow, Tired Climb is one of the strongest tracks on that record and it is an absolute barnburner tonight, vocally, Pleasants sounds amazing and for me Cope was a revelation

Bottom Line from To Walk A Middle Course is another solid track, into Quicksand, the mood and texture of the guitar tones enveloping you, this is a very tranquil tone and sits comfortably against some of the more heavier moments of tonight’s set.  The theramin adding moody ambience to the set, with me jokingly remarking that Dr. Who must be in tonight or words to that effect.  It is a given that To Forget is next, given the qualities of this track, bare strong resemblance to the previous one.  The majestic Long Gone is up next and this is another great tune, which translates to the stage perhaps even better than on the Ultraviolent record.  Again there is a strong percussive element to this tune and it is a drummer’s wet dream, because it is yet another example of the rhythm section nailing things to the wall.  Unknown Awareness, We’re Taking This and Running Red takes us into the tail end of the set.  Perhaps with a fitting Encore, including Don’t Look Back, kinda typifying the journey of an intense touring schedule, with the refrain of ‘keep movin, don’t look back’.

It is close to 11.30pm and Said and Done is just a stunning end to a brilliant evening tonight.  Worth the journey on a cold, wet Friday?  You bet your fucking ass, it was worth it.  Much beer was consumed, I met some ace people and to top it off, all bands were awesome.  I’d say it was pretty much as good as it gets.

Interview with Jagged Vision

2014 is almost upon us and no doubt a lot of great albums will be coming our way to impress the hell out of us. But I may have already heard one of 2014 best début albums already.

Harvest Earth is the incredible new album from Norwegian Stoner Metal/Hardcore Mob – Jagged Vision. This album literally destroyed my whole world on the very first listen. These guys are one of my top tips for stardom in 2014. As Harvest Earth is a fucking monster waiting to devour everything in it's wake when its released in Feb 2014.

Need more proof. OK I copied the following from my review of their excellent début album.
  • The album has a track called Spiritual Invasion, which has Philip Cope from Kylesa providing vocals.
  • Laura Pleasants (from Kylesa) helped with the layout of the artwork
  • Philip Cope (Kylesa) produced the album
  • The band is newly signed to Kylesa’s new record label – Retro Futurist.
  • The band are supporting Kylesa on their forthcoming Euro 2014 Tour
I described their début album as: “So what does the realm of Stoner Metal have in store for us in 2014? – Well if anything is to go by from this brutal and blistering Hardcore based Stoner Metal Mob – we are going to be in a loud, fast and angry time. As Jagged Vision have delivered one of 2014’s first brilliant Stoner Metal releases with Harvest Earth.

Harvest Earth is a 35-minute blast of fast-paced Stoner Metal riffs spread across 10 brutal tracks that will leave you physically drained. The Hardcore vibe is amped upto maximum levels here. It is an uncompromising assault on the senses.

The album offers a huge blast of dangerous Sludge Metal riffs into the mix as well. This album is brilliantly entertaining as well as being slightly dangerous to your health. Jagged Vision proves they are a band to be reckoned with. The riffs come thick and fast with expertly played hardcore beats giving Jagged Vision sound extra bite.”

Well I am pleased to say that Jagged Vision have kindly agreed to talk us here at Sludgelord. So lets see what they have to say.

Q1 – Hi guys. How are you today. Thanks for doing this. Really appreciate it.

-Hi man! We´re doing great!

Q2 – For people not in the know, can you give a brief history on how the band came about and where it is today.

-Well, we´ve grown up with the punk and hardcore scene here in Norway. Around 2010 we where starting to get bored with the standard hardcore riffs. Since we had started to get more and more into the more sludgy and psychedelic stuff we wanted to try and jazz it up a bit with some stoner influences!

Q3 – Now congrats on your new album – Harvest Earth. Now you may of noticed that I liked it a lot. Bet you guys can't wait to release this in Feb 2014 and unleash your brand of sonic riffs upon to the world.

-We are stoked as fuck on finally releasing this thing! We hope people will dig it, and maybe blow some speakers

Q4 – I described your sound as Hardcore-Stoner Metal. How would yourselves best describe your sound. As it's very ferocious at times and a bit unrelentless.

-I think that is a good fit! We are basically hardcore-kids playing our own take on stoner-metal

Q5 – Congrats on signing to Kylesa's Retro Futurist Record Label. How did that come about. Great label. Am a huge fan of your labelmates – Sierra who we have featured as well.

-Yeah, Sierra is great! Can´t wait to tour with them this January.

Q6 – How did you manage to get Philip Cope to produce the record and to sing vocals on Spiritual Invasion

-Daniel, our guitarist travelled with Kvelertak on their tour together with Kylesa and Converge, and met Phillip there. When we where looking for a producer for our album he was our first choice, we love the stuff he has produced, and really wanted him to work on our record.

Q7 – Though you do have a couple more guest appearances on the album. Mainly Glenn Reaper and Hallgeir S. Enoksen. Quite a strange mix for a Stoner Metal album. But it works superbly well. Loved the mix of different vocals on the tracks. How did you decide on those two musicians to work on your album?

-They are both good friends of ours. Hallgeir sings in the heaviest band in Norway, Purified in Blood. Glenn tattoos us and used to sing in Purified in Blood but plays in a cool band named Helldiver. We have a lot of respect for these guys talent, so they came as a natural choice when we wanted some extra spice on our songs.

Q8 – Was Harvest Earth a hard album to write and record for.

-Yes, and no. With this being our first record we had a lot of material and inspiration for the riffs. But at the same time, we where trying to be focused on weeding out the lame stuff.

Q9 – Would you change anything about it. Or are you happy with the final version.

-We are stoked on the final outcome! And we hope other people are to!

Q10 – What is the song writing process in the band? Is it a group collective or is it down to one individual.

-It has mostly been a one-guy thing, but starting to work on our second album, it has become more of a collective process. This way we´ll make sure you´ll get an eclectic mix of heavy riffs!

Jagged Vision - Harvest Earth cover art

Q11 – I love the album cover. I know that Christoffer Jaarviken came up with the design and Laura Pleasants created the layout. Did you have much involvement with the design process.

-Chris is a good friend of ours (and an awesome tattoo artist), he has also done the cover for our previous EP. So when we asked him to do our cover art, we told him the basic idea and just knew he would come up with something great.

Q12 – What is the whole concept of the album? Or do you want people to find this out for themselves.

-There is no concept or story line, but I think lyrically I would describe it as a story of us not fitting into general society. The cruelty, ignorance and apathy of the human race amaze me every day.

Q13 – What is the Norwegian Sludge/Doom/Stoner Metal Scene currently like at the moment. Do you get many gigs in your hometown or do you have to travel further to perform regular.

-Right now there is some cool stuff popping up like Warp Riders, Tombstones and Helldiver. There is definitely a scene for stoner, doom and sludge in our hometown Stavanger, its always a great time doing shows here.

Q14 – You will be supporting Kylesa on their forthcoming European Tour in 2014 along with Sierra. Congrats on that one. Bet your looking forward to that tour. What can people expect on the tour. (I will definitely be at one of the gigs. Either Glasgow or Leeds on the UK Tour.).

-Thanks, We´re stoked on getting to participate on this tour! I would say; get ready for some intense shit. We´re stepping up our game for this one!

Q15 – Which bands and musicians albums are you currently enjoying? Any recommendations you can give to our viewers for bands to check out.

-I´ve been into Anciients, ASG, Earthless and Crippled Black Phoenix a lot these days, and the new All pigs Must Die album is heavy as fuck. If anyone out there have yet to check it out, they should!

Q16 – In 5 words or less – describe the live Jagged Vision experience.

-Heavy. Noisy. Groovy

Q17 – Congrats on your début album is being released on Vinyl. Bet your pleased your début album being released on Wax. Are you fans of Vinyl yourselves?

-Thanks! Yes, indeed. The feeling of putting on a 12” and just rocking out is priceless.

Q18 – If you could give advice to someone wanting to start a band. What advice would you give them?

-Remove all your mental blockades and just go for it.

Q19 – With 2014 coming up soon. What would you like to see happen or change within the Sludge/Doom/Stoner Metal scene next year.

-More bands should be inspired by the new Drake album. And they should also play in Norway more frequently. We´re often left out!

Q20 – Finally, Do you have anything to say to your fans.

-Listen to our new album, and come to our shows in January/February! We´re counting on it.

Well guys, thanks for doing this. I really appreciate it. Best of luck with your album. I think its' going to explode big time within the scene. Hope to see you live in concert either at Glasgow or Leeds.

Thanks man, we really appreciate it! We´ll definitely see you in January.

Harvest Earth will be available to buy from Retro Futurist Records from Feb 1st 2014 on Vinyl and DD.

Jagged Vision - Harvest Earth - Album Review

Jagged Vision - Harvest Earth cover art

Jagged Vision is a Hardcore/Stoner Metal Band from Stavanger, Norway

The members are:

Ole Wik, Daniel Vier, Andreas Seglem, Joakim Svela, Kato Austrått

So what does the realm of Stoner Metal have in store for us in 2014?

The riffs come thick and fast with expertly played hardcore beats giving Jagged Vision sound extra bite.

First track – Darkness in Light – is the perfect introduction to show you what this band can do. Playing some of the fastest Stoner Metal riffs, you have heard in years. The Hardcore element is laid to ground with an almighty hammer from the gods than the mere mortals playing here. Vocalist Ole – is on fire here. His screeching vocals provide a sense of fear lurking in the background. Get used to this style of vocals as they stay brutal through out and it is a wise choice from the band.

After the first track has finished, please take my advice and hang on as Jagged Vision are going to take you for the ride of your life for the next 32 minutes or so. 1 song down and 9 to go. Jagged Vision has more than enough time to make you a fan of their music.

Second Track – No Peace – is aptly named as this track transports you to a desolate battleground only to be confronted with more sublime hard-hitting Stoner Metal riffs to battle through. No Peace. Indeed. Only violent riffs await for you if you are brave enough. However, Jagged Vision starts adding a lot of groove, which you would not expect on an album like this. It shows that Jagged Vision is a hugely talented creative band indeed.

After this track, the band blaze through a stunning collection of tracks for you to devour. Vocals and lyrics are shouted out at you like your life depended on it. Though you will be too busy listening to the epic riffs on show. Tracks such as Path Of Bones, Shadows Glide and Supernova will no doubt prove that Jagged Vision have a brilliant future ahead of them. As these tracks are all perfect examples on how to write brilliantly catchy Hardcore/Stoner Metal tracks with riffs to die for.

5th track – Supernova – is my fave track on the album as it is a 6-minute epic showing what the band can fully do when in full flight. This is where Jagged Vision lay claim to being one of 2014 brightest hopes for Stoner Metal. Supernova has a demented a prog rock edge that fits in perfectly with the Hardcore/Stoner Metal riffs being played right before you. Yeah I loved this track from the very first moment I heard it. This is where I knew this band had true talent.

Jagged Vision up the ante with more bone-crunching riffs played at full force that will leave you breathless through out. If Jagged Vision original idea for this album was to leave the viewer on the edge of their seat and begging for more then all I can say is mission accomplished. This is the most fun and action packed 35 minutes I have had in years .The album had me coming back for more Jagged Vision punishment.

You want more convincing of this band’s talent. Well here are some facts I should have pointed out sooner.

- The album has a track called Spiritual Invasion, which has Philip Cope from Kylesa providing vocals.
- Laura Pleasents (from Kylesa) helped with the layout of the artwork
- Philip Cope (Kylesa) produced the album
- The band is newly signed to Kylesa’s new record label – Retro Futurist.
- The band are supporting Kylesa on their forthcoming Euro 2014 Tour

Need anymore convincing to check out these awesome hardcore bruisers. If it is good, enough for Kylesa then it should be good enough for you. I have previously featured their labelmates – Sierra earlier this year. Retro Futurist has a bright future indeed with two awesome bands as Sierra and Jagged Vision on their books.

But anyway back to the band and album. It is on Spiritual Invasion that Jagged Vision proves once and for all they truly are a force to be reckoned with. Philip’s vocals are perfectly seamed with Jagged Vision bruising riffs.

The band are on fine form through out. The instrumental work is flawless through out. Philip has produced another incredible sounding album. He captures the dangerous essence of Jagged Vision on the album. This is a brilliant album from start to finish.

Thanks to the band for sending me a promo copy to review. Much appreciated guys. Harvest Earth will be available to buy from Retro Futurist Records from Feb 1st 2014 on Vinyl and DD.
