Review:

What happens when a band takes an extended hiatus (19-20 years, give or take) from making goregrind/death metal and then return with re-recordings of their early nineties material? A pretty brutal record happens, apparently.

I'm going to state this right away. The drums appear programmed. I don't care. They do exactly what they need to do to support the relentless riffs and grooves that pound through this record. I say do what you need to do to get what you hear in your head out there.

Everything on these re-recordings sound intense and present with some obvious benefits of modern recording techniques and the drums enhance the fact that the guitar and bass are really tight. There is a dark, minor key ambiance that permeates throughout with vocals that get so guttural I'm pretty sure you can hear shit gurgling at the bottom guitarist/vocalist  Frank Peiffer's guts at the end of ‘Garroting Away’. There are some truly disturbing human sounds throughout this record. That track also features some creepy-as-hell ambient synth-like sounds that appear a little unexpectedly and to good effect. A similar orchestration appears in ‘From Plasma to Embalming’.

There are a few lead guitar moments that lend themselves similarly to the synth-ish parts with a focus more on which notes that add to the tension of the riff, as opposed to how many notes can be played in a few bars of music. There are LOTS of great blasts and digusting, atonal slashing on the strings consistent with grind and death metal. Then there are spots like the intro to ‘Repulsive Corpse’,  which features a mid-tempo, slamming groove and later in the same track where the band gets almost a little sludgy with an actual guitar solo, that while relaxing in tempo, don't let off on the overwhelming sense of dread the band is creating. Of course we also get some great build-ups and stops and a few distorted bass breaks for good measure, like the intro to ‘Birth Remains’.

The band has a drummer performing with them live and has several festival dates lined-up starting this month through the end of the year. I imagine these veterans can slay a stage and who knows if they'll be at it again anytime soon.

I would have never guessed that some of these songs were originally written when I was 7.

BLACK SHEEP WALL - Some people are never satisfied. Well it seems the raucous Moorpark, California quartet wasn’t content with just showcasing one song. IRON REAGAN - Australian waters are famous for housing many of the world’s deadliest sharks and it’s said that if a shark stops moving, it’s dead. Well those waters are about to get just a little more crowded. It may not be a shark invading, but a creature just as restless, with just as much bite.

It was announced yesterday that Richmond, VA punk / thrash quintet IRON REAGAN will hit the land down under after their month long North American tour. The band spent most of its time on the road last year, stopping just long enough to record their 24-song ‘Tyranny of Will’ album, which was released by Relapse Records this past September. TEMPLES FESTIVAL - Fans of the band EARTH take note. The TEMPLES FESTIVAL is set to shake the foundations of Bristol this May and Earth may just be the band that finally brings the whole city down.

OCEANO - Chicagoland deathcore agitators OCEANO have a new album and tour in the works, it was announced. The album, ‘Ascendants’ will hit stores March 23 in Europe and March 24 in North America via Earache Records. It’s the band’s first new release since 2013.

"This album is an evolution of our brand of heaviness,” frontman Adam Warren said. “It is our most focused release ever and contains a concept that elevates the band onto a higher plane. DEAD IN THE MANGER - Moving from death grind to black grind now, Dead in the Manger made the news yesterday when they raised the curtain on their new “II” video exclusively at Decibel Magazine. The video was directed by David Hall of Handshake Inc.

"This is probably the first time I've made a video for a band without talking to any of the members," Hall stated. "I sort of just got an email one day from the label that asked if I'd be interested in making a video for a black/grind metal band. I listened to the track and really dug what I heard so I agreed. The only real info and guidance I was given was the name of the song, 'II', the album title, and the album's artwork. From listening to the track and taking the cover artwork as inspiration, I decided to try and create a depressing and degraded, impressionistic, moving version of the cover, and use some found footage, stuff that I shot, and mix it together to make a scratchy, black-toned void that hopefully assaults the eyes as nicely as the music assaults the ears. After a few botched attempts, I arrived at the version you see now."

The song was taken from the band’s upcoming ‘Regression’ album, set to be released on 12” vinyl, February 3 through 20 Buck Spin Records.  You can stream it right now at this location.

The Kaotoxin signees, are traveling to Cuba alongside La Horde, Sickret and Superbutt, as part of the bi-annual Brutal Fest where they will play with local bands around the country.

Review :

Any band that divides their tracks on an album up into 'acts' has grandeur on their minds.

Eye of Solitude's Canto III certainly has more than an element of grandeur to it. Act I: Between Two Worlds (Occularis Infernum) opens with a synth led section before a wall of guitars grabs you by the jugular and repeatedly batters you in the abdomen, and quickly into submission. The whole track is unrelenting in its delivery. The doom/black elements are superb and become a permanent fixture of an epic record.

Act II: Where The Descent Began, picks up where Act I left; crushing and uncompromising. The mid part of the track has a particularly haunting section which is backed by the sound of crackling middle section that simmers excellently. When the section ends, the blast beat drumming and snarling vocal take the track to black metal territory. It is furious and bludgeoning. The track closes with a doomier segment with more guttural vocals that are despairing and claustrophobic which really show the Act's name off; a descent into some extremely dark place.

Act III: He Who Willingly Suffers shows the band opening with a melancholy piano section before a riff so heavy and slow it makes you wince. Over the riff is a higher pitched guitar that offers some, just some, light. A haunting, lone voice and the same melancholy piano line makes up the middle section of the track before being bookended by another horrifically heavy ending, punctuated by a great solo and some more great blasts on the drums.

Act IV of the album starts in more upbeat fashion with another dense wall of guitars but a more standard drum beat. Again the track breaks for more despair with the vocals reaching new levels with a near weep. The solo on this track is a lonely one that enhances the weeping nature of the vocals.

The album closes out with the final two acts following the same path. Act V has a mantra like vocal to really bringing the title; I Sat In Silence, to life. This track is one where the bass seems to have more of an impact in the mix of the album too. Again, this shows some good variation. The mix of drum, bass and soaring solo elevates the track towards the end.

The final act of the album; In The Desert Vast, opens with a quicker pace. The music towards the end of the track feels vast and sprawling. In keeping with the albums tone, a suitably cinematic ending is signalled by a less than cheery piano.

Lengthy albums are sometimes hard work. This album won’t be for some people, but if you like long, doomy epic stories told through heavier than hell music, this is for you. It would seem like an endurance test, however Eye of Solitude manage to break things up with different facets to their sound which make the album more interesting than arduous.
