Lunglust - "Repetition is Hell" (Album Review)

This is a killer release from Lunglust, a perfect balance of straight-ahead rocking and sonic ambition that will keep you coming back for more. Repetition may be hell but in this case it leads to sweet punishment for the listener.

The Review:

Boston has a rich history when it comes to metallic hardcore. Lunglust continue this fine tradition with a sound that bares the influence of the past, whilst pushing high-octane, heavy music in exciting new directions.  Ripping through eight tracks in just less than half an hour, “Repetition is Hell” is a blistering ride. The band’s exhilarating brand of filthy punk rock blends d-beat, hardcore, hints of grindcore and pushes everything into the red. Imagine Coliseum’s “No Salvation” turned up to 11 with raw gravel-gargling vocals and you get a good idea of the carnage you’re dealing with. There’s a healthy amount of sludgy riffs on display too, particularly towards the end of “Silver Tongue”.

Lunglust throw in a few unexpected twists and turns along the way that add real depth to the album. “Arrows” takes their winning formula and stretches it out to epic proportions. The drawn out climax echoes Converge’s most intense moments, the insistent riffs building tension before giving way to the glorious release of the furious “REPETITION IS HELL” refrain.

“Godless State” adds an unexpected melodic edge to proceedings, echoing Envy’s grandiose wall of sound without compromising the band’s rough edges. The soaring lead guitar lines add an almost post-rock feel, it would be interesting to see the band investigate this further. The intros of “Sovereign Ends” and “Silver Tongue” hit the sweet spot between angular post-hardcore and frantic garage rock bringing a Drive Like Jehu/Hot Snakes fervour to the table that sits well with the band’s sludgy, heavier side.

Pink Mass - "Slvt Cvlt" (Album Review)

Well, I wasn't sure what to expect from 'SLVT KVLT' from New Jersey maniacs Pink Mass...nor was I prepared for the raging cacophony of grinding punk nonsense these tracks contained.

From the bizarre “Intro”, right the way through to the “Outro” it's a melange of gimp mask clad insanity. Tracks like 'Diseased Minds' and 'Putrid Prophet' fly by in an instant but provide plenty of massive chugs to sink your teeth into. The brilliantly titled 'Symbol of 8 Dicks' is nasty and filthy in all the right places. There's no relenting here, just balls out noisy grind punk. 'Slut Shaming' is gone as quickly as it arrives, but leaves you feeling like you've had your entrails removed. 'Summoning The Grotesque' and 'Hang The Bastards' bring things to a skidding halt in a truly vicious fashion.

Music this outrageous is played late at night, when only the weirdest, most fiendish members of your circle of friends are still awake and everyone else has crashed. This tape gets broken out, some more substances are consumed, and shit gets even weirder. The Review:

When Fistula are involved in something, you can count me in! This time, the enigmatic Against All Odds Productions are rereleasing their split with Ratstab titled 'Toxicology Report' on a beautiful clear purple 7 inch vinyl. With some tracks originally recorded over 2 years ago, AAOP are making it available for the first time!

Fistula's contribution, 'Milf INRI' is the type of turgid filth we've come to know and love from them, scuzzy and downright nasty in its tone and delivery. Vocalist Dan Harrington spews his venomous bile all over the place while Corey Bing and Co keep the sludgy/grinding rhythm. As usual with Fistula, we get samples laid over the top, this time about vaginal trauma with a crucifix... Ratstab prefer to keep things short and sweet with their half, 4 tracks at just under or just over a minute starting with 'Wired Shut'. Clearly pissing in the same alley as Fistula, it starts slow for a moment before the chaotic spazzcore dives in throwing bony elbows and knees towards your face. 'Oil Bloodstream' and 'Dereks Don't Run' fly past like a piss filled beer bottle hurtled at your head before 'Slaughterhouse' is diligently smashed into a bloody pulp in a drunken frenzy.

If you don't have this, buy the fucking record! You owe it to yourself. If you don't buy it, both bands will shit on your doorstep.
