The First and Last Days of Unwelcome cover art

“The First and Last Days of Unwelcome” is just a big ol' stick of Doom. If you cut it in half it would not only thank you, but it would actually say 'D-O-O-M' in giant letters down the middle. Killer riffs slower than the expansion of the sun, soaking wet with amp fuzz down tuned to -11. Harrowing and perfect in every single way”

“The First and Last Days of Unwelcome” CD//CS//DD//LP track listing:
1. Day One (05:04)
2. Day Two (02:58)
3. Day Three (02:24)
4. Day Four (02:26)
5. Day Five (02:07)
6. Day Six (05:02)
7. Day Seven (04:45)

The Review:

Lumbar is a Doom expression by three friends from the US Northwest, all of them fairly revered within their sonic circles. A project that consists of Yob's Mike Scheidt, Tad Doyle from Brothers of the Sonic Cloth and Aaron Edge (of one time Himsa). 'The First and Last Days of Unwelcome' is not only a cosmic event of grand proportions (i.e. VERY good), it also serves as a one-off snap shot of a place and time.
Lumbar has unfortunately been sidelined to just a studio project, due to the fact that Edge (who played all the music on the recording) has been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and would be unable to play a musical instrument live as a consequence. Sad as this may be, it appears that you cannot keep a good man down and Edge is already formulating a new heavy endeavour in Portland for which he will be providing the vocals. We do, of course, wish him the absolute best. A good way to do this is to convey just how great this album truly is.
'The First and Last Days of Unwelcome' is seven tracks long, and numbered as days. I wish this album actually did last a week, but bucking recent Doom and Sludge trends the 7 tracks amount to 24 minutes of bite-size gold. As much as this noise fiend loves a marathon, I also like more done with less. And there is so much on offer here.
'Day One' is instant satisfaction. Scheidt's classic holler is pure Doom delight, and the music keeps up too. Beautifully morose waves of fuzz wash over you, and you realise that you're in riff country, where the real flavour lives. The bass wobbles, and the drums crash, both of them in a death grip. As if anything else was expected at all.
'Day Two' is another sullen delight. The atmospherics in the background are faint yet intricate, and when the heavy rolls in it does not disappoint. Pretty much void of any hope or light, and you would not want it any other way.
'Day Four' is just rolling crush to begin, like a rolling pin from the left hand of death. And then it becomes all wistful and echoing at the mid-point, which is tremendous. You constantly forget about the relative brevity of these tracks, due to the sheer variation that is on display at times.
Best in show goes to 'Day Six', for just being a big ol' stick of Doom. If you cut it in half it would not only thank you, but it would actually say 'D-O-O-M' in giant letters down the middle. Killer riffs slower than the expansion of the sun, soaking wet with amp fuzz down tuned to -11. Harrowing and perfect in every single way. Edge really outdid himself throughout this thing, and it serves as a fitting testament to his playing if he never manages to commit another Lumbar recording to tape.
This is real Album of the Year contender stuff  and 'The First and Last Days of Unwelcome' could not be more of a welcome spectacle.

Brothers of the Sonic Cloth - 'Brothers of the Sonic Cloth' (Album Review)

Album Type: Full Length
Date Released: 16/2/2015
Label: Neurot Recordings

‘Brothers of the Sonic Cloth’ CD//DD//LP track listing:

1. Lava
2. Empires of Dust
3. Unnamed
4. La Mano Pederosa
5. I Am

Brothers of the Sonic Cloth is:

Tad Doyle | Vocals, Guitars
Peggy Doyle | Bass
Dave French | Drums

Review:

Brothers of the Sonic Cloth just released their self-titled debut album and it sure is something else. At a running time of 44 minutes the album slowly moves forward as though the songs are being weighed down by their sheer sonic mass. There is a lot of space in the music, but that doesn’t mean that there’s much room to breathe. Listening to this slab of wax means surrendering yourself to the thunderous plodding of bassist Peggy Doyle and drummer Dave French, as well as the soaring guitars and layers upon layers of guttural vocals by band leader Tad Doyle. Brothers of the Sonic Cloth will knock the wind out of you, help you back up, and then do it all over again.

The initial blow to the diaphragm is “Lava,” a song with the shortest running time and the fastest delivery. It starts out with a tight march on the snare drum followed by a pummelling bass line and chainsaw guitars. Doyle’s vocals scream for help from deep within the mix as though he, too, is being swallowed by the band’s overbearing presence. With every menacing stroke of the guitar or crash of the cymbal, the dark, subdued atmosphere spreads slowly like the currents in a tarpit. And to think, the mood that Brothers of the Sonic Cloth have set in “Lava” is simply an introduction to what is yet to come.

As far as tempo is concerned, the band abandoned that the moment “Lava” ended. The following track, “Empires of Dust,” laboriously trudges forward through its eight minutes of running time. With the next song, “Unnamed,” Doyle and company find themselves in a painfully slow groove that, even though it’s a downer, displays sense of triumph, like the band was determined to find a light at the end of the tunnel. But such a journey is never easy and this becomes apparent during the song’s conclusion when a struggle emerges between two treacherous forces. The struggle continues through the album’s climax, “La Mano Poderosa,” and had the band performed “I Am” from a pulpit, every church within earshot would have spontaneously burned to the ground. The militant drums in this song’s intro are a languid call for reinforcements while Doyle sings the album’s most haunting lyrics, “dying is easy, it takes strength to breathe. For the strong to go on, sometimes you’ve got to bleed.” How appropriate.

This album is not one for the light hearted. Brothers of the Sonic Cloth are heavy, thunderous and aggressive. There’s no sense that the band is trying to spread any demonic messages but the themes – both musically and lyrically – certainly deal with the hellish aspects of fighting death and the afterlife.  There is a journey that this album takes, a motif of sorts, and with every spin of the disc, it becomes increasingly apparent. It is an album that keeps giving and the more it gives, the better it gets.

The Sludgelord News: BROTHERS OF THE SONIC CLOTH Unleashes New Hymn Via NPR; Self-Titled Debut Out TODAY On Neurot Recordings

Following teasers from Decibel Magazine and Classic Rock, today NPR hurls forth the asphyxiating heaviness of "Unnamed" from Seattle doom bringers, BROTHERS OF THE SONIC CLOTH. The tune makes it's chest-caving appearance on the band's self-titled debut, out TODAY in Europe via Neurot Recordings.

Slow, heavy and wholly unapologetic, Brothers Of The Sonic Cloth is the sound of earthly decomposition and planetary demise. Fronted by legendary guitarist/vocalist Tad Doyle - formerly of TAD and Hog Molly - alongside veteran bassist Peggy Doyle and drummer Dave French (The Anunnaki), the trio's debut was tracked at at Robert Lang Studios and Doyle's own Witch Ape Studio in Seattle, Washington, mixed by Billy Anderson (Sleep, High On Fire, Melvins et al) and serves as Doyle's first recorded release in nearly fifteen years. Already reaping critical hails from both sides of the pond, Invisible Oranges vows, "it will be very difficult for any band to release a better album than this one in 2015," further gushing, "The glacially paced 'Empires Of Dust' evokes Monotheist-era Celtic Frost with some post-punk elements, while 'Unnamed' imagines a world where the Melvins play black metal. The album's crown jewel is the eleven-minute 'La Mano Poderosa,' which begins life as pure stoner Sleep worship then slowly, deliberately morphs into a noise rock jam buried under layers of metal distortion and Bonham drums. When the song's coda comes back to (and augments) the opening riff it feels like Godzilla returning to the ocean. Like the most iconic albums, this one reveals hidden nuances and elements with every listen."

Comments Doyle of third movement, "Unnamed," "One of the hardest questions to honestly ask oneself is, 'Who am I?' People move through life attaching labels to themselves, and to others. It's human nature for you to call yourself a motorcycle rider if you ride motorcycles. We tend to attach the things that we do -- our jobs, our actions -- to our identity of who we think we are as individuals. By doing so, we are selling ourselves way too short by labeling our existence. The song 'Unnamed' is about letting go of false perceptions of ourselves and others in order to be truly open and free from the shackles of perception."

Adds NPR, "Doyle's ears must have absorbed the past decade of heavy where the quiet-to-ear-splitting-loud dynamic dominated, but like his Pacific Northwest brothers in Yob, there is purpose in its movement. After a minute and a half of moody guitar delay, the distorted downbeat aided by bassist Peggy Doyle is an air cannon to the chest. Do whatever you need to clear the space, but turn the volume as high as it can go - you deserve it. The robotic crunch comes out of Godflesh'sStreetcleaner, diced up like carrots with a Japanese knife by drummer Dave French (The Anunnaki) and briefly spun out of orbit by Doyle's rubbery Jeff Hanneman-like flourishes. Doyle also flexes some serious vocal prowess, howling like a grizzly bear throughout and chanting through panned guitars in the final minutes. In eight minutes, 'Unnamed' is a hulking monster that maybe just wants a hug ... at least until Doyle lets out one last 20-second, searing croak."

Free yourself with "Unnamed," now playing at NPR at THIS LOCATION.

You can also get crushed by the sounds of "La Mano Poderosa" heavying up the airwaves of Classic Rock at THIS LOCATION and "Lava," still crushing Decibel HERE.

BROTHERS OF THE SONIC CLOTH will bring their sonic rumble to the stage this April with a special record release show at The Columbia City Theater in Seattle. Additional live performances are in the plotting stages and will be announced in the coming weeks.

The Sludgelord News: BROTHERS OF THE SONIC CLOTH: CLASSIC ROCK PREMIERE "LA MANO PODEROSA" FROM THE SEATTLE TRIO'S DEBUT ALBUM

Classic Rock premiere the epic centrepiece of Brothers of the Sonic Cloth's self-titled debut album, 'La Mano Poderosa'. Eleven minutes of shifting sands and foreboding intonations potently convey the ominous nature of the band's end-times music, with periods of decisive and direct riffing interspersed with captivating lamenting melodies.

About the track vocalist/guitarist Tad Doyle comments, “Originally the main riff was one of the first songs for BOTSC, conceived in 2007 and developed over a period of seven years until this release. Lyrically the subject matter is of the notion that one has been here for thousands of years.  This comes with the realization that there are 'old souls' who may have been here many times and have witnessed glimpses of past lives through a series of déjà vus.  Some who have lived as hunter gatherers working soil, some as soldiers on bloody battlefields joining their blades with others flesh, and those who have witnessed their lives as other living beings and animals. This return to ‘here', being the last time.

LISTEN TO "LA MANO PODEROSA"

Don't forget, you can still sample a taste of the heavy ahead of the record's February 16th release date with a five-minute video teaser that finds Doyle presenting an in-depth look at the impetus in creating Brothers of the Sonic Cloth, the tracking process and the weighty themes that bind the record. Watch the video teaser here. Pre orders for the CD and LP are now available, and can be placed at the followinglocation http://neurotrecordings.merchtable.com/artists/brothers-of-the-sonic-cloth

Brothers of the Sonic Cloth is the sound of earthly decomposition and planetary demise; a slow, entrancing dance towards a looming apocalypse… thick, monolithic, deliberate and devouring. Fronted by Seattle’s legendary guitarist/vocalist Tad Doyle — formerly of TAD and Hog Molly -- Brothers of the Sonic Cloth is a trio of longtime rock soldiers that includes veteran bassist Peggy Doyle and drummer Dave French (The Anunnaki) and their forthcoming full-length debut maintains a long-held tradition of conjuring some of the heaviest music from the darkest depths of the Pacific Northwest.

Slated for release next month via Neurot RecordingsBrothers of the Sonic Cloth was captured at Robert Lang Studios and Doyle’s own Witch Ape Studio in Seattle, Washington and mixed by Billy Anderson (Sleep, High On Fire, Melvins et al). Thrusting forth five hauntingly heavy tracks, with two bonus hymns included on the CD edition the offering serves as Doyle’s first recorded release in nearly fifteen years. Brothers of the Sonic Cloth’s audio manifestations are welcomingly unfamiliar, splicing thick, jagged riffs through chilling post-punk drumming and hulking compositions that blow soulfully hot and desolately cold, sometimes within the confines of one track. Their long-form pieces present the kind of mature ideas and expansive progressions that outpace the listener’s short-term memory leading them off the proverbial map; familiar landmarks like sludge, post-metal, rock all but disappeared over the horizon. Authentic and authoritative, Brothers of the Sonic Cloth is as much a persistent thudding body punch of sonic destructive force as it is a thoughtful statement of awareness and the inescapable raw condition of life.

Brothers of the Sonic Cloth Track Listing:
1. Lava
2. Empires Of Dust
3. Unnamed
4. La Mano Poderosa
5. I Am

The Sludgelord News: Daily Digest

Your rundown of the top sludge news stories of the day …

ACID KING
It’s been ten years since the last new ACID KING recordings were released. Now, the San Francisco trio is ready to roll out their latest effort. The new album is called ‘Middle of Nowhere, Center of Everywhere’ and it will be out April 14, 2015 on Svart Records. The big news of the day came when the band revealed the cover artwork for the new album, which you can see to the side here.

Guitarist/vocalist Lori S spoke about the new record.

“We had several songs in the works over the years that we spent most of our time touring Europe but in between working our day jobs, we didn’t put the effort into recording. I really wanted to accelerate the process and get new music out. It’s time. This music that we’ve been playing for so long, that was initially obscure and underground, seemed to grow over these past 10 years and the timing was right to release this now!”

The artwork was created by veteran tattoo artist Tim Lehi and features a wizard riding an Asian-style tiger in space.

The band will be at Desertfest in the UK from April 24-26. Details of an upcoming U.S. tour should be announced soon.

BROTHERS OF THE SONIC CLOTH
In other free stream news, the opening track to Seattle-based trio BROTHERS OF THE SONIC CLOTH is up-and-streaming on the Decibel website. The song is called “Lava” and band leader Tad Doyle spoke about the meaning behind the song.

"'Lava' was originally inspired by a Native American folklore story that talks about Mount St. Helens and Mount Rainier, both active volcanoes in the Cascade Mountain range spanning Washington State and Oregon. The story in short; 'Where little sister goes, big sister follows,' with 'little sister' being Mt. St. Helens and 'big sister' being Mt. Rainier. Native culture and geology records have mentioned that these eruptions happen every four-hundred or so years. Rainier is well overdue. This song is basically a tribute to the force and natural powers that lay within the region and what an eruption would look like through the eyes of the life that surrounds the region."

The full album will be released by Neurot Records on February 17 and pre-orders are available at this location. You can hear “Lava” right now at this location.

CHAINS
Slovenian doom / drone band CHAINS have quietly built a name for themselves in darker quarters over the last few years. Part of what has kept the band ‘quiet’ has been their lack of live shows. Well Chains is ready to take the stage for the first time to perform musical rituals under the name The Chains Experience. The first show is set to take place this Saturday, January 24 in Banja Luka (Republic of Srpska) at DKC Incel. You can find more information about the performance at this location. The band promises that each live ritual will be unique and will offer a visual as well as musical experience for concertgoers.

To note the band’s coming out party, Doom Cult Records will also be re-releasing Chains’s first EP from 2012 titled ‘Of Death’ with an all-new bonus track. The song’s title is “Samhain MMXV” and you can hear it at this location. Originally the work of one man, this bonus track is the first Chains recording to feature new member Knjaz on “ritual drums and chorus chants”. According to the band’s facebook page Doom Cult will be releasing the album as a FREE download.

The original edition ‘Of Death’ album was available as an extremely limited digipack of only 10 copies. The new edition of the CD will be released on January 26 and it will come in a DVD case. For now, you can find a free stream of the album at this location.

SHINING
Season of Mist Records revealed yesterday the details of suicidal black metal pioneers SHINING’s new album. Band leader Niklas Kvarforth comments:

"SHINING, the ninth, has been given the name of 'IX - Everyone, Everything, Everywhere, Ends'. For once I am extremely pleased with how this album turned out. I believe that the fevered presence of filth and uncompromising darkness is more prominent than ever before. Not only will our more recent fan-base 'enjoy' the oppression contained therein, but I am also certain that those who stopped listening toSHINING after our fifth album will find the new one plague-ridden with what some might have felt was lacking on the more recent efforts… that atmosphere of old."

The album will be released by Season of Mist on April 20 with pre-sales beginning February 3. Shining have also unveiled a new website which you can find at this location.

Exile on Mainstream Records has released details of Berlin-based sludge trio TREEDEON’s new album and a free stream has been made available for the closing track. The album, titled ‘Lowest Level Reincarnation’ will feature 8 new songs and over 50 minutes of sludge. It will be released on March 9. If the closing track is any indication, sludge-fiends will want to mark the date on their calendars.

“Definitely the most powerful album I’ve ever been part of,” drummer Christian "Boomer" Böhm said. “We combined aggression and melody, had a great time writing and recording these songs. I can’t wait to play them live, which is exhausting, but very satisfying.”

Once again, you can hear closing track “Terracide”, at this location.
