LORØ is:

Mattia Bonafini
Alessandro Bonini
Riccardo Zulato

Review:

This Italian trio gives many nods to Kyuss, who if you remove Sabbath from the equation (which we all realize is impossible), got this whole stoner/desert rock movement started. There is the love for the heavy, experimentation with time changes and dynamics, and most importantly, a total disregard for what the powers that be feel about the musical creations that Josh Homme and his crew imparted upon us.

LORØ jumps in your face right away with ‘Pollock’, a tune with pounding, precise drumming provided by Alessandro Bonini, as Riccardo Zulato adds mid-range manic rapid fire guitar riffing, and Mattia, the secret weapon, provides strange off the wall additions in the form of keys, bass, and who knows what else.

‘A Trick Named God’ is maybe my favourite track thus far and brings to mind 35007's approach to this stoner/desert rock stew.  No need for vocals because there is too god damn much going on musically!  Tight in the pocket grooves with eerie outer space effects once again provided by Mattia and overall this track makes for the perfect soundtrack for a lovely walk in the park on a sunny day with your love or an intense acid trip on a cold rainy night locked in your house alone.

‘High Five’ is another excellent example of what this band has to offer, providing the listener once again with a tight groove of a band like, well Kyuss, and a refreshing nod to the likes of Meseski, Martin, and Wood or DJ Shadow.  The band delves into jazzy interludes which would usually warrant an ass kicking but in this case is welcome because it is well done and genuine.

LORØ do stray into some territory which isn't my cup of tea, such as the fifth track which is a free form "industrial" noise-scape which might be best suited as background music to a horror flick,  overall though, this a killer release.  It is very cool to see a band that is willing to (as they say on their website) "play in your basement", because they realize it is important to be humble enough to start out in obscurity if you ever want to be seen as legendary, a lesson taught to us, by well,

....Kyuss.

Bio

Kooba Tercu is Johnny Tercu and five other guys which he calls the crew.

Johnny Tercu and his crew spend time in a moist, rat & cockroach infested basement playing something loud and heavy. He ventures pointlessly into nothingness with the same sense of no future as most people in Athens these days.
After endless hours of jamming, Kooba Tercu has distilled the ideas developed over a couple of years in ten songs resulting in something that sounds incredibly familiar but maybe not quite like anything you've heard before.

Recorded live. And then overdubs.

Review:

Now what the hell is this.....

Kooba Tercu is an Experimental Stoner Rock Band with the emphasis being on Experimental. Their S/T debut album is one weird as hell album that will delight and frustrate many of you in equal measure. As the bio states – this sounds incredibly familiar but sounding something completely different as well.

The album has shades of glitch based electronic synths and ambient noises. Then the band throw in elements of Hard Rock/Stoner Rock to confuse you with. Truth be told I hated this album the first time I listened to it as I couldn't get away with the experimental nature of it all. Then I decided to give it a few more listens and I slowly started to come round to the crazy experimental Stoner Rock world that Kooba Tercu have created here.

The album is all over the place then why can't I stop listening to it. It's crazy as hell. The album doesn't know what it wants to be. Experimental Rock, Avant-Garde Rock or Stoner Rock. It is undeniably heavy and deserves credit for daring to be so fucked up and different to other bands. There are great riffs to be found amongst the craziness of it all especially on 3rd track - Batman - as it ventures into Torche style Sludge Rock that I didn't expect at all. Though the riffs suddenly stop and is replaced with 30 seconds of experimental ambient noise.

You may think I hate the album. I don't. I'm just trying to point out how bat-shit crazy the album is. One minute it's all crazy as hell experimental and the next minute, the band turn into Sludge/Stoner Rock Gods. Chika and Disembarkation are two songs to prove this theory. The rest of the album is just as weird and wonderful as the first half as Koobu Tercu don't care what you think about them. They're creating music on their own terms and that's what makes them such a great band to discover.

Their S/T debut album is insane, crazy, fucked up, intense and a total blast from start to finish. They maybe the craziest Stoner Rock band currently out there. And I mean that in the best possible way. Check this out if you want to hear something different and one that doesn't play by the rules.

It's available to buy on BandCamp Buy Now Download and Vinyl through Spinalonga Records/Body Blows Records.

Bio

Wallace Vanborn are back!

The fearsome threesome hailing from Ghent (Belgium) are about to release their long awaited third album, “The Orb We Absorb” late October. 2014

Earlier this spring, Ian Clement (vocals / guitar), Dries Hoof (bass) and Sylvester Vanborm (drums) went camping at the infamous Rancho De La Luna – studio in Joshua Tree, California: the epicenter of all great rock ’n roll (Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, Mark Lanegan, PJ Harvey, Arctic Monkeys) whilst Chris Goss – godfather of desertock – was responsible for the production, mix and spiritual guidance on what might be the dirtiest sound the band has released thus far.

During the 13 new tracks on “The Orb We Absorb”, they'll be destroying whatever processed beats are the new flavor of the week with a timeless rock album aimed at opening minds and opening eyes. Time for a wake up call. Time for a dark, heavy record and music with a soul for actual people. Mindless consumers, be advised.

Review:

I have only been a fan of Wallace Vanborn for over a year or so. A friend recommended me to them saying and I quote "Stoner Rock with an Electron Rock vibe". I checked out a few of their videos on YouTube and I was intrigued. Their 2nd album – Lions, Liars, Guns & God - is a soaring collection of Stoner Rock tunes mixing Hard Rock and shades of Electronic Rock. The vocals can be off-kilter at times but that's part of Wallace Vanborn's charm. They play by their own rules.

'Their 3rd album - The Orb We Absorb - takes the band into heavier space rock territory like never before. Check k out the excellent album cover to see where this band and album is heading. Straightforward Stoner Rock riffs mixed with shades of Electronic rock but driven by a heavy and dangerous dose of Space Rock. Shades of Monster Magnet can be heard on the album at times but that is a good thing. As it gives a good indication on what to expect for the next 53 minutes or so.

The Orb We Absorb maybe a hard album for some listeners to actually like. It is not the most straightforward of albums as it takes time for the huge riffs to come by but if you are in the mood for something different and edgy then you will find much to admire with The Orb We Absorb. It has an epic science fiction and fantasy vibe to it especially where the song titles and lyrics are concerned. The 13 songs included here, show a band not afraid to experiment with the standard Stoner Rock sound by adding electronic sounds that gives the album a crazier and out of control feel compared to other Stoner Rock albums.

The Orb We Absorb is packed full of great tunes that shows how talented the band actually are. 3 albums in and Wallace Vanborn are starting to feel more comfortable with their surroundings. Tracks such as Revealers, Vampires (Big Drain), Supply & The Damned and Wizard Cats Blizzard are some of the standout tracks on the album as it's where Wallace Vanborn are having the most fun playing. You can feel the passion and creativity that went into making this album. The vocals have a slight indie-rock feel to them but do not let that distract you from the heavy cosmic riffs that Wallace Vanborn have in store with you.

The 2nd half of the album is where most people will probably find the most enjoyment as that is where things become heavier and the experimental vibe is kept to a bare minimum. Though I dig the whole feel of the album as it feels like an out-of-body experience though you do not know where you will end up or how you got there. The only thing that matters is to enjoy the ride as it's going to be one trippy wild ride into the cosmos.

The production is excellent through out as Wallace Vanborn pack a different amount of sounds and noises to confuse and entertain you with. The Orb We Absorb is a complex and highly intelligent offering from one of Belgium's most creative and forward thinking rock bands. It won't be to everyone’s taste but if you want to hear something different and original then you're going to dig this album in a big way. All in all this is an excellent release for all you Space/Cosmic/Stoner Rock fans to check out whether you're based in this galaxy of one far, far away.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

Thanks to Thomas at TSR Records for sending me a promo to review. The Orb We Absorb will be available to buy on CD/Vinyl/DD from October 31st 2014 from TSR Records. You can buy the CD/Vinyl from this website.
