Choice Cuts: W.A.S.P. - (S/T)

The Band :
·         Blackie Lawless | lead vocals, bass guitar
·         Chris Holmes | lead & rhythm guitars
·         Randy Piper | lead & rhythm guitars, backing vocals
·         Tony Richards | drums, backing vocals

In the early 80's Sleaze Metal/Hair Metal was just starting to really come into its own, if you know anything about that era, you know they called a lot of these acts, Strip bands, as they played all up and down the Sunset Strip. Names like Motley Crue, Great White and London come to mind. A band called W.A.S.P. Fell into that category, however the band didn't necessarily fit as their demeanour, songs and attitude weren't anywhere near as nice as the aforementioned bands. In early 1984, W.A.S.P. Unleashed their Self-Titled debut on Capitol Records. Given that this album is now 30 years old you're probably wondering why in the hell I'm babbling about it. Well lemme tell ya, not only was this album the start of a torrid love affair that I continue to have with the band to this day, but it was also one of the best debuts in the history of Metal in my opinion.

The album was momentarily shelved due to the highly controversial track, “Animal (I Fuck Like A Beast)”. Never a band to sit idly by, the boys opted to hold off the release of the full length and instead released the song as a 12” single with an independent label in the UK. Much to the dismay of the record execs at Capitol, the single exploded and the band were almost instantly awarded a Gold Record for its sales. Forwarding on a bit the Self-titled album was released, debuting at 74 on the billboard charts. Not bad for a band the PMRC had already jumped due to lyrical content and the heinous acts of lead vocalist/bassist Blackie Lawless – the dude threw raw meat at the crowd, had a saw blade crotch piece and some of the most bad ass musicians around in his band.

The first single off the album “I Wanna Be Somebody” is a skull dragging, fist pumping anthem about fighting the man, standing up for yourself and doing it with a take no prisoners attitude. What's more metal than that, let's see, lead breaks that'll make any guitar enthusiast stand up and shout. And the riff, man the riff is ferocious, not only does it pack a punch, but it creates a perfect pocket for the rhythm section to destroy everything in it's wake. Up next is every schoolboy's dream and every mother's nightmare - “Love Machine”. This tune alone, has taught me more about playing double bass drum patterns than any book/video I've ever touched; you couple that with the fact that throughout the verses it's just bass riffing and drums and you get exactly what I'm talking about. Lyrically speaking Lawless, touches on what he can do, what he expects and what he needs... Something every young impressionable male needs to hear. HAHAHA!

The third single off the album is entitled “School Daze” and back in the day I was all about it, because well like every other red blooded male, I hated school. Now that I'm older, I still dig the track but it doesn't resonate as much – I'm a LONG way from school daze for real. The last two tracks I'll talk about are in my opinion the highlights and neither received much of a push from the label as singles - “Hellion” and “Sleeping In The Fire”. “Hellion” is still my Heavy Metal anthem, there will never be another. Lyrically, it deals in everything you need to know about being a Metalhead. “The Gods you worship are steel, at the Altar of Rock N' Roll you kneel”. This tune could've easily been HUGE on MTV, had a video been made. “Sleeping In The Fire” is a ballad of sorts, but as opposed to babbling over a woman, Lawless is fixated on the occult, Lucifer and all things dark and mysterious.

To this day you still won't find better twin lead guitar work, for what appears to be over a minute, guitarists Piper and Holmes trade off blistering leads and continue to rip them until the song fades out. Hands down one of my favourites off the album and even better live, if you've had the privilege.

W.A.S.P. Self-titled album is a classick piece that should be in every fan's collection if you fancy yourself a Metal head. Personally, I have at least 10 different versions of it on album, cassette and cd. And yes, I'm sitting in a room right now with at least 20 W.A.S.P. Posters on the wall. Nothing is wrong in admitting you're a fanatic. If you haven't heard of this band, go check them out now. They're not what you think and I think that's what has hurt them all these years. They weren't soft enough to be a strip band like the Crue, nor were they heavy enough to dish it out with bands like Slayer & Anthrax, they were somewhere in between and that's a mighty fine mix from where I'm standing. “The Torture Never Stops”!

The Oath - S/T (Album Review)

Album Type : Full Length
Date Released : 17/3/2014
Label : Rise Above Records

The Oath, album track listing :
1. All Must Die
2. Silk Road
3. Night Child
4. Leaving Together
5. Black Rainbow
6. Silver and Dust
7. Death Delight
8. In Dream
9. Psalm 7

The Band

Linnéa Olsson | Guitars
Johanna Sadonis | Vocals

Review :

The Oath are the latest band to be blessed with Rise Above's attention. Determinedly retro and hard rocking, All Must Die kicks things off with a swinging tempo and lots of bass runs. There is a distinct garage rock vibe to the riffing while the vocals take on the witchy kind of style that Blood Ceremony present.

The Oath are not as musically diverse as some within the doom genre- this is straight ahead hard rock out of the 70's with doom inflections in the themes and riffs. Satan gets mentioned early, just in case you are in any doubt.

Silk Road follows with a small build up and then gets down to business- again the tempo is groove some with a couple of changes here and there. Night Child is a propulsive rocker with a dark flavour to the main riff. Leaving Together has a more sombre guitar opening and caries on the atmospherics into the verse- things get heavier, though...

Black Rainbow is up-tempo with vocal melodies that follow the changes in the riff. Half time surfaces and then the track switches back and forth effectively. Silver and Dust has an insistent riff and good pacing with a nice breakdown and change section in the latter half.

Death Delight has strong vocals/melodies that are well delivered and propel the track along. In Dream, meanwhile, honours the time honoured tradition of a two minute acoustic track- very welcome- and it acts as an ideal primer for the closing epic Psalm 7. Slow to start, the track builds in layers with guitar and voice, bass and so on until the heaviness comes in after a rather dreamy few minutes.

All in all, this a self assured debut, brimming with riffs and retro sounds. Is it worthy of the attention that has been bestowed upon it? Only one way to find out...

Bio :

DOWN AMONG THE DEAD MEN, a new musical project coming soon from the minds of Dave Ingram and Rogga Johansson.  Dave is well known from his time as vocalist for two of England’s mightiest Metal legends, BOLT THROWER and BENEDICTION along with his Danish band DOWNLORD and his current two online radio shows, METAL BREAKFAST RADIO and LAMBERT’S BASEMENT. Rogga is equally legendary with multiple bands under his belt, including PAGANIZER, RIBSPREADER, EDGE OF SANITY, PUTREVORE, REVOLTING and THE GROTESQUERY to name but a few.

Joining them is Rogga’s fellow PAGANIZER and RIBSPREADER member, Dennis Blomberg. Session drums on the album will be performed by Erik R Bevenrud and future live shows by Matte Fiebig. Live bass duties will be arranged at a later date.  DOWN AMONG THE DEAD MEN’s musical style has been specified as Crust-riddled Punk with a definite Death Metal edge. The band have recently completed the first full length album which is released this November on CYCLONE EMPIRE RECORDS

The Band :

Dave Ingram | Vocals
Dennis Blomberg | Guitars
Rogga Johansson | Guitars/Bass
Erik R Bevenrud | Session-Drums (only on the album)

Review :

Cyclone Empire have done it again- the label has so much quality death metal on its roster it is hard to name a better label out there for this type of thing. Indeed, this year alone has seen some stunning records (Icons Of Brutality, Facebreaker etc.). The label's latest brings together death metal legends Dave Ingram and Rogga Johansson.

Punk/Crust Death Metal is most definitely the order of the day with this self titled release. Draconian Rage blasts with the best of them before bringing the Motorhead-ish tempos that fans of Nails et al will be familiar with. The Doomsday Manuscript keeps the energy levels up with Ingram's vocals very powerful and resolutely classic in their delivery. Bolt Thrower always had a certain musical and cultural overlap with punk/crust and Ingram proves this to be no coincidence here.  As Leeches Gorge follows swiftly- the record just keeps barrelling forwards- a solo is thrown into the mix along with a neat refrain of “You only consume” sticking in the memory effectively.

The Epoch brings a very punky feel to the riffs, keeping the tempo high but with a slightly less death metal feel. Over the course of the 13 tracks on the album the sound does not get boring- excellent riffs and breaks are found in all the songs (check out the series of riffs in this song for proof). Adolescence of Time is positively feral in its crusted grooves as double bass drums repeat like machine guns and riffs are similarly spat out. The tracks are concise and straight to the point- but all are distinct from each other- no mean feat with this style of music. Bones of Contention begins with a more DM approach but the d-beats make a return before too long as the song melds its parental genres effectively. Dead Man's Switch again invokes Motorhead to start with memorable vocal lines and, yes, a superb switch to head nodding tempo at the half way mark.

A Handful of Dust starts Carcass-like with an excellent riff, kicks up a notch, then moves between the two for the remaining two minutes. Infernal Nexus is a more straight forward proposition, coming in at under two minutes of punky directness. Dead Men Diaries follows with a similarly sparse running time, and similar frenetic approach. Venus Mantrap has a stomping introduction and a kind of mid-period Entombed vibe in its groove. Again, the album is shown to be deftly track listed; you won’t get bored as there is variety of approach. Next up is the self titled track, from this self titled album. It is a furious two and a bit minutes- solos, blasting, crust and death metal are all present and correct here. Indeed, as a title track it makes a statement and firmly lays out what the band and record are all about. The Stones Lament closes the album powerfully leaving your ears ringing and considering the relentless nature of the songs laid down here.

Aggressive, powerful, deftly delivered and a perfect distillationof the genres referenced by the band's press release; if you have an interest in Bolt Thrower, Nails, Black Breath, Entombed and so on then you must hear this record. Uncompromising iron fisted spite!
