The Sludgelord Video Premiere - "So Jinxed" by DoctoR DooM

By: Aaron Pickford

Formed in the French town of Ariège in the Midi-Pyrénées by guitarists Jean-Laurent Pasquet and Jérémie Delattre, since their formation in 2011 DoctoR DooM has steadily been making waves in the underground scene.  With their sound firmly rooted in the classic era of the 60’s and 70’s, DoctoR DooM convey a vintage sound with a loose and almost garage rock aesthetic, with hints of blues and hard rock.  First coming to the attention of The Sludgelord, way back in 2013, it was clear from taking with Steve STB (STB Records) that he felt this band was destined to follow in the footsteps of such luminaries as Graveyard and Witchcraft, indeed following an outstanding vinyl release from STB Records,  of their DoomO’ EP DoctoR DooM have taken part in a series of high profile festival appearances including Spain’s Riff Ritual Fest, Doom Over Karalis in Sardinia and Germany’s much-celebrated DesertFest before taking to the studio at the end of last year to record their very first LP.

Fast forward then to the first day of autumn and with the release of DoctoR DooM’s debut full length ‘This Seed We Have Sown’ a mere 3 months old, it will finally get the vinyl release promised from STB Records.  To coincide with the vinyl release this Saturday, 26th September and to build up anticipation for all you vinyl junkies, The Sludgelord is delighted to premiere the new video for ‘So Jinxed’.  Here is a brief word about their album

‘It's a monstrous sound, reminding me of a club scene in many a Bond film, but replace lounge piano or jazz with a much more upbeat rock band. This is Everyman Rock. And they love to stay around with their songs, so look forward to an album full of 4+ minute slabs that will take you along sonic highways of old.’

The Seed We Have Sown’ is available on CD here and will be available on vinyl here this coming Saturday, 26th September 2015 12pm EST and please find the details of the vinyl release below

10.Kingdom Come 02:45

Bio:

Beheaded is Swedish one-man band Lightsabres' third album in just over 1,5 years, and the first that's not self-released. All songs are written and performed by John Strömshed (also singer/guitarist in HeviSike band Tunga Moln) and were recorded at home in the same lo-fi fashion as previous albums. I've used more guitars on this one, working a lot with guitar harmonies on several songs, which gives the album a sound that sets it apart from its predecessors.

Review:

One-man Swedish Punk/Stoner Rock band – Lightsabres is back with his new album – Beheaded – and it's 22 minutes of Fuzz-Laiden Punk/Stoner Rock attitude that has a very gritty attitude towards life with a dark cynical edge compared to his previous albums.

Opening track – Beheaded – is almost 4 minutes of angry fuzz given a punk-rock makeover with a certain Truckfighters style Fuzz/Stoner Rock vibe. The vocals are pissed off as hell as Lightsabres plays to his strengths and unleashes some powerful riffs for you to devour.

Second track – Dirty Lies – carries on a more darker and twisted path than the opening song as the album becomes more bleaker with the music going slightly more psychedelic as Lightsabres lays down impressive dark-rock almost Gothic riffs as this one-man virtuoso lays his soul for everyone to see. Impressive stuff indeed. It only lasts for 90 seconds or so but this is one of the albums stand out tracks.

Third track – Flesh And Bone – goes down a QOTSA route with the fuzz laid one very thick as the music feels it's being played at 100mph. The vocals do have a certain early-QOTSA Josh Homme sensibility to them but this is Lightsabres show and he's not going to take any shit from any of us. The nightmarish based fuzz/stoner rock licks are the main attraction here and Lightsabres isn't going to let you forget that.

Fourth Track – Wolves – is a more hard rocking affair with the vibe primarily in the Stoner Rock mood and ready to play a ton of action packed riffs. The vocals have a more direct approach and the music may have a slight tendency to venture into almost Computer Game territory. You'll understand when you hear the song though it's still an absolute blast to listen to as Lightsabres brings in a great sideline of Psychedelic Rock.

Fifth Track – Fleeting Shadows - carries on the vibe from Wolves. It feels Fleeting Wolves and Shadows are the same song but split into two parts as I didn't realised that Wolves ended and Fleeting Shadows had ended. It ends the first half of the album leaving you hungry for more. And it's a great job that Lightsabres has 5 other tracks to impress you with. I'm not going to a song by song review of side B.

Though let me tell you the 2nd half of the album is exciting as the first as Lightsabres creates more stunning and dangerous Fuzz/Stoner Rock riffs with traces of Grunge and Punk Rock giving this album a more darker tone. Especially on tracks such as Sleep It Off, Receptor, and Kingdom Come. The production is fantastic through out the album. It's just a shame this album is only on for 22 mins as you start to get to grips with the crazy environment behind you and it FUCKING ENDS!!!

I just wish Lightsabres included a few more songs on this album as it would have been an even better album. Well you can't have anything. Maybe on the next Lightsabres record. Until then – Beheaded is a full-throttle, kick-ass Stoner Rock record packed full of great tunes to rattle your anger to. Awesome and Highly Recommended.

If you want to buy this on Vinyl you better be quick as it's getting the full STB Records treatment and those fuckers sell out fast. Details of the vinyl details are listed below.

Beheaded is released by STB Records on Saturday, June 27, 12:00 EST (18:00 CEST in Europe). It's getting the usual STB treatment with three editions:

* Die-hard (oxblood/mustard w/ black splatter, limited to 50 and including a huge vintage-horror-movie-style poster. The die-hard will be available exclusively from STB)

* OBI (ultra clear w/oxblood haze and mustard splatter, 100 handnumbered copies)

* Euro/standard (black/mustard, 125 copies. Available exclusively from lightsabres.bigcartel.com)

The apparition known in physical form as OCCULTATION materializes with its second full-length LP,Silence In The Ancestral House, expanding on the twisting, malformed post-punk and cast-iron dark doom first revealed through its Three & Seven debut.

Under the light of the moon, OCCULTATION creeps, crawls and crushes like a many-tentacled abomination using seductive power and hypnotic conjuring on the nine curses contained within. Captured from air in a far more powerful and convincing manner than ever before by Kurt Ballou at God City Studios, the band strikes a mood both sombre and grim, reflecting a contorted, wrecked expression in a cracked mirror through eminently listenable heavy metal sorcery.

Phoenix, Arizona death metal horde, LAGO, has booked a tour of the West Coast of the country this Spring, supporting their debut LP, Tyranny. The album, initially released to excellent critical acclaim in September 2014 via Battleground Records, will now see a vinyl edition courtesy of Blood Harvest Records, who has just unveiled the details on the wax version of the brutal record.

From April 24th through May 2nd, LAGO will inundate the Western US masses with their dominating, ominous black-tinged death metal retribution on the Tyranny Tour, with shows in Flagstaff, Long Beach, Los Osos, San Jose, Portland, Seattle, Boise, Salt Lake City and Denver confirmed. Updates to the tour, additional LAGO live actions and further news on the band can be expected in the coming weeks.

LAGO Tyranny Tour:
4/24/2015 The Hive - Flagstaff, AZ
4/25/2015 Blacklight District Lounge - Long Beach, CA
4/26/2015 Sweet Springs Saloon - Los Osos, CA

4/28/2015 Soundcontrol - Portland, OR
4/29/2015 El Corazon - Seattle, WA
4/30/2015 The Shredder - Boise, ID

Tyranny will see its vinyl debut on March 16th, with 100 copies on blood red and 200 on standard black vinyl. In addition, LAGO also just secured an ESP guitar endorsement, only solidifying the band's deadly capabilities even more.

Produced by Ryan Butler at Arcane Digital Recording (Exhumed, Phobia, Landmine Marathon) and mastered by Dave Shirk at Sonorous Mastering (Incantation, Exhumed, Today is the Day), LAGO reigns down forty minutes of primal, breakneck death metal with an ominous, blackened atmosphere, the album including a guest appearance from Jonny Davy of Job For A Cowboy. Issued Invisible Oranges, "the Phoenix quartet plays competent and well-executed death metal... Besides a blackened foray here and a chamber music segue there, they blast along like streamlined icons, strengthened by a proven Floridian flow." MetalSucks called in an equally positive write-up: "LAGO know when to beat you over the head with sheer brutality, they know when to slow things down for gargantuan effect, and they know how write a real, artful guitar solo. In short, they're the perfect death metal band." Headbang Or GTFO gave the record a 5/5, issuing, "Tyranny is a modern day death metal masterpiece, that features some of the best things to happen to the genre but keeping it simple and relatively grim. And No Clean Singing called Tyranny, "...top-shelf death metal, like some hellish blackened offspring of early Morbid Angel and Disma, fully armed with an arsenal of impressive technical chops and infectious hooks...Tyranny has vaulted onto our list of highly anticipated 2014 albums."

The Sludgelord News: THE BIG TEUTONIC 4 The legacy continues!

German thrash titans KREATORSODOMDESTRUCTION and TANKARD, collectively known as THE BIG TEUTONIC 4, have announced the release of their second prestigious 10" vinyl record. After the huge success of the first release in early 2013, the next output will contain rare cover versions of iconic NWOBHM classics.

The 10” will be available on red vinyl and released via the Nuclear Blast UK Webstore. You can pre-order your copy here: http://bit.ly/BigTeutonicVinyl

The tracklisting reads as follows:

Side A:
KREATOR - Lambs To The Slaughter (RAVEN cover)
SODOM - Don't Walk Away (TANK cover)

Side B:
DESTRUCTION - Princess Of The Night (SAXON cover)
TANKARD - Iron Maiden (IRON MAIDEN cover)

THE BIG TEUTONIC 4 had this to say about the release:

Mille Petrozza, KREATOR: "As teenagers we were die hard fans of RAVEN. This song perfectly reflects the lifestyle back then and was the second cover version we recorded in a studio."

Tom Angelripper, SODOM"When TANK released The 12“ Single 'Don`t Walk Away' in 1981, it was the first time I got in touch with this awesome band and the title track is still one of my favorite songs. They inspired me to become a die hard metal fan until the rest of my life and keep my own band as a trio ensemble."

Schmier, DESTRUCTION"Shortly before we formed DESTRUCTION we were all together at a SAXON concert in Switzerland on their "Denim & Leather" tour. 'Princess...' always was on of my all time fave tracks from the british NWOBHM masters - this very unique riff was already the first step into speed metal, by that time we did not know how important this evening was - a night and a song that has definitely influenced us all the way!"

Gerre, TANKARD"The first two MAIDEN albums are my personal favorites so it's a real honor to me, that our version of 'Iron Maiden' will finally be available on vinyl. It was super fun to record and even Paul Di'Anno once said in an Crossfire interview with Rock Hard magazine that he liked our version. There couldn't be any better accolade and we're very exicted to see THE BIG TEUTONIC 4 continued."

Vinyl Corner: Goya / Wounded Giant Split 12" (Vinyl Review)

Album Type: Split 12”
Date Released: 3/1/2015
Label: STB Records

‘Goya / Wounded Giant’ Split 12” Vinyl track listing:

1). Goya – No Place in the Sky (14:03)
2). Wounded Giant – The Room of the Torch (07:07)
3). Wounded Giant – Dystheist (06:09)

Review:

FULL DISCLOSURE: I reviewed this record at 33 rpm rather than its intended 45 rpm. Listened to it a good half dozen times and never caught on either. Hey, it's DOOM, it wasn't indicated anywhere on the record and how's anybody supposed to know that you're playing it too slow? I'm certainly no John Peel, but it's happened to him as well...That moment when you're listening to something that you know Doom heads are gonna lose their shit over.

Opposite sides of the same coin, both Goya and Seattle’s Wounded Giant deliver the goods on this latest split offering from STB Records. Hailing from Arizona, Goya sound like the American Electric Wizard, with a much lower, more rumbly bottom end and a slowed down, almost mournful vocal delivery. With repeated spins these elements become instantly recognizable, giving the trio a unique sound that helps add their personal stamp in a very populated musical genre. Seattle trio Wounded Giant are similar in scope but deliver a bit more of a raw, garagey type sound, further enhanced by Jack Endino’s indelible production work. With blaring sonic effect, they deliver exactly what you want from a doom band with a sound that harkens back to the Seattle’s Tad and Mudhoney heyday. If Sub Pop had released a doom band’s LP back in the day, Wounded Giant would have likely been on the roster.

PACKAGING:

Being fairly new to STB records, this was the first package I received from them. The reason I'm mentioning this is because, upon opening it I immediately remarked how fun the entire unboxing experience was. From the very sturdy outer box with the personalized warning stickers, telling your mail carrier that s/he's carrying something precious, to all the goodies that came included (stickers, a patch, a button, download codes). It was just fun to be surprised by so many extras. Receiving any record package is a great feeling, but STB seems to place importance on the entire vinyl experience rather than just delivering the record itself. Don't laugh, see how many headphones Dr. Dre sells? The attention to detail is done right.

The record itself is specifically mastered for vinyl playback, making for a great sounding slab. Housed in both inner and outer poly sleeves and including a lyric sheet/liner notes and some suitably killer artwork, all aspects of the vinyl experience are addressed. It’s a full-on listening experience and probably a foregone conclusion that fans of the Doom genre will be lining up their mouse clicks in order to snag one of these up.

Demonauta - Caminando en la Luna LP (Album Review)

Album Type: Full Length
Date Released: 21/11/2014
Label: Bilocation Records/Kozmik-Artifactz

‘Caminando en la Luna’ LP track listing:

A1. Hotel (5:57)
A2. Hacia el 6to Sol (04:48)
A3. Caminando en la Luna (05:40)
A4. Mr. Magnet (03:20)
B1. Al Viento Entender (03:51)
B2. Camaleón (03:02(
B3. El Refugio (04:18(
B4. Kom-v (04:10(
B5. Seamos Libres (04:47)

Total: 39:53 Min.

Bio:

Demonauta were founded back in 2008 in Santiago de Chile with David on guitar and vocals, Giovanni on guitar, Ronnie on bass and Rodrigo at the drums. In 2009 the first 6-track Demo was recorded and released on several blogs in the net.

After several line-up changes (now with David/v&g, Miguel Angel/b and Ale/d) the band went to studio again in 2011 to record their first full length called "Vol. 1", which received great reviews all over the planet. In 2012 the next full length followed, called "Caminando en la luna". The second full length is a big step forward: Demonauta never sounded more intense, sharp and to the point. The riffs are simply amazing mixing the intensity of stoner metal with the sun-drenched sounds of desert rock and fuzz rock superbly. One minute absolutely heavy and the next some superb fuzz riffs. Demonauta cultivate stoner fuzz rock in the best South-American tradition.

The Band:

David | Vocals, guitars
Miguel Angel | Bass
Ale | Drums

Review:

Chile seems to be oozing out the sludgiest heavy rock from its borders of late. Standing far to the front of this pack roars Demonauta with their second album “Caminando en la Luna” now availiable on vinyl, which without looking at a translation program I believe means ‘walking on (or in) the moon’ roughly. Looking it up it does (I still got it Ms. Duckworth and Mr. Fallico!); the album name is an apt description of the tripped out fury that awaits you.

Boasting a slurry of explosive riffs and blistering leads, their sound is the closest comparison to Palm Desert scene, without actually sounding derivative. Indeed Demonauta sound fresh, with their laid out chilled grooves and the deep rhythm section interplay, it is unmistakeable throughout the record.

Some of the nuggets separating Demonauta from their peers, is their heavy, HEAVY 80s metal groove, balls to the wall on the second track “Hacia el 6to Sol” and the amazing solo on the title track. Turn up the solo on the title track and watch it echo through your brain, it is an EXCEPTIONAL solo and one of the best I've heard in years.  This track alone is worth purchasing “Caminando en la Luna.”

Moving deeper into the review, I would like to begin with stating that the fourth song is named “Mr. Magnet,” which clearly is an amazing name marking an amazing song. The riffing on “Camaleon” reminds me quite a bit of “Whitewater” era Kyuss with those big sliding power chords riffs. The most unusual track on the album is “El Refugio” which crosses into a lot of different sonic territory, with a very interesting clean almost funk chord verse riff which seques into a heavy chorus.  The outro of the chorus section is pretty unusual sonically and sounds quite unlike anything I've heard. Then it gets even weirder with a minimalist solo over what sounds like a very jazzy walking bassline in waltz time.

Oddball stuff but great, a bit reminiscent of the song writing on Captain Beyond's S/T; it's always a pleasure to see when these kind of unusual experiments turn out great.

I feel like mentioning the mix now. This is a perfect example of how to mix heavy music, everything is clearly audible and the vocals are a touch recessed back in volume, but still clear giving the instrumentation room to rock you. In addition, the tones present are ‘godly’, particularly the fuzzed bass tone in the title track which crushes like a tanker hitting a bridge.  Not to belittle the guitars thought, because the ‘wah’ work here is outstanding and the maturity displayed on the leads throughout is breathtaking. The drumming is outstanding with busy fills in the right places and some fantastic propulsive grooves, this guy swings a 4 on the floor harder then almost anyone I've ever heard and his drumming reminds me of Nick Lucero and Gene Trautmann, who mostly played on QOTSA's “Rated R.”

In closing then, all I have to say about “Caminando en la Luna” is the grooves are infectious, the beards are luxurious, and the tones are sublime. Treat yourself to what is one of the better albums you will hear from recent years and certainly check out the new vinyl. Check it out below.
