TOP 16 ALBUMS: The Sour 16 Chart for October 2016

By: Aaron Pickford

Alter Bridge

It is that time once again people to cast our minds back, and digest the 16 albums that would become October’s most viewed albums and form the basis for our sacrilegious Sour 16’, the finest and most profane riffs around bundled together into a premium sized sonic soufflĂ©.

You know the drill, each month; you the reader are unwittingly compiling a list of the top 16 records that we featured in October, covering all genres of metal.  Is it not a chart, in which reviewers or contributors extol their opinion about their favourite music.  The ‘Sour 16’ are the records that have been trending the most at Sludgelord Headquarters.

The results are compiled based on page views alone and calibrated into the list below. All reviews can be viewed by clicking the artwork and we have included album streams wherever possible. (Total views since their publication is highlighted in red).

16). Headless Kross - "Projection I” (377)
http://thesludgelord.blogspot.co.uk/2016/10/album-review-headless-kross-projections.html

15). Holy Serpent - "Temples" (404)

All in all, “Temples” is a great record.  Holy Serpent nailed it.  The songs are well crafted, well-structured, the vocals are right on and the music is perfect parts psych, doom, sludge and out right heaviness.  Don’t hesitate, buy “Temples” immediately.

14) Truckfighters - "V" (406)

All in all, a solid offering; a sound that is current; one that rocks effortlessly and one that proves regardless of line-up changes Truckfighters continue to be strong.

13) Zaum – “Eidolon (423)

“What makes Zaum’s music so intoxicating is the sheer density of their sound. Layers of synths, sitars, flutes and who knows what else, build up to create a foundation of all-encompassing drone for the bands epic compositions.  Prepare to be transported to a higher realm.”

12). Various Artists - “Meantime (Redux)” (442)

Meantime (Redux)” is a face-melting reinterpretation of what many consider Helmet’s finest hour, it   pulls off the tricky balance of paying respectful tribute to a classic album while being an excellent listen in its own right. Hopefully it will introduce long-term Helmet fans to some exciting new bands and make any other people with their ears stuck in the underground realise that Helmet were great all along.

11). Charred Wall of the Damned - "Creatures Watching Over The Dead" (460)

Richard Christy & Co have created something special with “Creatures Watching over the Dead.” It needs to be heard and talked about.  This is metal with heart.  Metal with soul.  And most of all?  Metal that’s larger than life.

10). Vermin Womb - "Decline" (541)

Vermin Womb succinctly distill the essence of their sound into one word: “Violence”.  It is a grimly exhilarating ride, but an oppressive racket that is hard to resist.

09). Yawning Man - "Historical Graffiti" (563)

“Historical Graffiti” is a drug that calms the soul of the listener”

08). Obsidian Kingdom“A Year of No Summer” (578)

“This record is well constructed and the instrumentation is very impressive. But for those looking for similar fare to their previous work, they’d best keep looking.”

07). Black Tomb - "Black Tomb" (585)

http://thesludgelord.blogspot.co.uk/2016/10/album-review-black-tomb-black-tomb.html

06). Fistula - "The Shape of Doom to Cumm)))" (612)

The Shape of Doom to Cumm)))” is dripping with sardonic hatred for scenesters and fad chasers, scrapping rusty barbed wire across the speakers as if to wound those who listen. They bring the noise, the hate, and will tell you to your face if there’s even a hint at being a douchebag.

05). Witchthroat Serpent - "Sang-Dragon" (640)

This is a dominating record and something which the band can be sure will appeal to all kinds of fans of stoner doom and sludge. Witchthroat Serpent have left a deep scar in the genre and it will take a long time to heal with a record so devastatingly heavy.

04). Watchtower  - "Concepts of Math: Book One" (781)

The guitars crunch, the vocals bite, and the band chemistry shines through on each song, almost as if they know what each other’s gonna do before they do it. A near perfect record, which for Watchtower, is pretty much par for the course.

03). 40 Watt Sun – “Wider Than The Sky” (827)

Although the record may find itself on the fringes of metal, the empathetic feelings Walker shares over soaring ten minute tracks should cause anyone who has felt anything before to reflect in some meaningful way. “Wider than the Sky” challenges its listeners to reflect for themselves, because after all it’s important to remember where one stands. 40 Watt Sun’s latest record is likely to find itself among the best records released this year.

02). Asteroid - "III" (1716)

It is a hugely diverse record and shows the advanced musicianship between the band, blending all kinds of stoner rock and fuzz. This is a band who are firmly on the rise to the top and know exactly how to get there. One of the best releases of 2016 without a doubt.

http://thesludgelord.blogspot.co.uk/2016/10/album-review-asteroid-iii.html

1). Alter Bridge - "The Last Hero" (20494)

If you have any interest in the more commercial end of the rock and metal spectrum i.e. Metallica, Maiden, Soundgarden and so on then this album could be a fine intro to the band. If you are a fan already you will enjoy this one immensely. Alter Bridge are leading lights in modern rock and may well be the last of a dying breed.

REVIEW: Watchtower - “Concepts of Math: Book One” (EP)

By Theron Moore

Album Type: EP
Date Released: 07/10/2016
Label: Prosthetic Records

The guitars crunch, the vocals bite, and the band chemistry shines through on each song, almost as if they know what each other’s gonna do before they do it. A near perfect record, which for Watchtower, is pretty much par for the course.

“Concepts of Math: Book One” CD//DD//LP Track Listing

1). M-Theory Overture (3:38)
2). Arguments Against Design (4:12)
3). Technology Inaction (6:20)
4). The Size Of Matter (4:51)
5). Mathematica Calculis (9:54)

The Review:

A new Watchtower record?  Well, please, don’t mind if I do!  “Concepts of Math:  Book One” combines Watchtower’s recent digital only release with a brand new song – “Mathematica Calculis.”

There’s so much hard rock / metallic precision with songs on “Concepts…” it’s almost like watching surgery from an observational booth, or, watching engineers and architects create schematics.  This is the record Dream Theater wishes it could make, because it rides that jammin’ line of just enough rock to satisfy the metal heads and just enough noodly, technicality to satiate the prog heads.  Watchtower nail geometric rock n’ roll with a calculus bullseye, right on target.  And by god they do. Every time.

My complaint:  The record is only five songs.  Yeah, I know this is a combo release but Watchtower needs a new full length, a proper full length.  The first song, “M Theory Overture,” is an instrumental, and although I generally don’t connect with instrumentals, this one’s laser perfect.  The second song “Arguments Against Design” bring vocals into the mix and this is where it gets interesting.  Will the vocals take away from the mechanized (in a good way) machinations of how on point the band is musically?  Answer:  No.

The vocals complement the music and give it that well deserved metal bite it screams out for.  Again, this is where Dream Theater fails and Watchtower succeeds.  Watchtower isn’t afraid to bring the rock and find a way to properly inject just enough metal to not throw off the delicate balance of each song. And balance is crucial with prog.

Go too much in one direction, or the other, and you risk either losing the audience or ruining the song.  Doesn’t happen here.  Watchtower gets it.  They understand the art as well as the science required to achieve this.  The guitars crunch, the vocals bite, and the band chemistry shines through on each song, almost as if they know what each other’s gonna do before they do it. A near perfect record, which for Watchtower, is pretty much par for the course.  You need to check this out…

Review:

Watchtower's debut EP - Radiant Moon - is building up a lot of hype before it's officially released on Magnetic Eye Records and it's hype that's wholly justified. As Watchtower are going to be one of the breakout stars from the Doom/Stoner Metal scene to look out for in 2015 and beyond. Radiant Moon maybe 16 minutes long but it more than delivers than most full length records can only dream about. Heavy psychedelic doom and gloom riffs spliced with hints of bleak Stoner based Weedian vibes.

The opening title track - Radiant Moon - is a harsh exercise in volume and volume with heavy pounding guitars, drums and vocals all vying for your attention. It's all out war. Mike from Magnetic Eye Records must have known what he was signing to his label as these talented Aussie's are in full confident mood as the music is spellbinding through out. Fans of Kyuss, Sabbath, Sleep and High On FIre may have heard their favourite new band of 2015. Radiant Moon has a violent psychedelic energy where the guitars are down-tuned to heck for a more direct threat to your senses.

The vocals are especially sharp. Remember that lead vocalist – Nico - is originally from Holland and used to be part of Hardcore/Sludge/Stoner Mob - Herder - before he emigrated to Australia. Well Herder's loss is definitely Australia's and Watchtower's gain. He's a lot more confident on this record compared to his previous output. Though this is Watchtower's world and they drag you in with tales of madness and despair. Watchtower turn into violent noise-overlords towards the end of the song as the atmosphere becomes very loud and unpredictable. The song fades out with ambient noises that instantly propel you into the next hard-hitting round for you to survive from.

The 2nd and final track - Living Heads - is a more fast paced affair compared to Radiant Moon as Watchtower unleash with an unstoppable Doom/Stoner Metal riff before slowing things down for a more stripped back bass-heavy affair. The vocals yet again see lead vocalist – Nico – venturing his anger to the world. This song is more Stoner Metal orientated compared to Radiant Moon. It more than matches the volatile excitement of Radiant Moon as Watchtower know they only have a short space of time to impress you with. They don't waste a single second. I can detect a slight Dopethrone influence but maybe that's just me.

Radiant Moon is a stunning EP as Watchtower justifies the hype currently being thrown their way. Australia has provided the Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metal world with an awesome new band to check out. I do hope that Watchtower explore the Ambient/Psychedelic Noise part of their music on their full length release as they create some interesting ideas that need exploring further. Until then, Radiant Moon is a must have EP. You need to buy this EP. Trust me on this. These guys are going places. Watchtower have the potential to be major players in the years to come.

Thanks to Mike at Magnetic Eye Records for the promo. Radiant Moon is available to buy on DD now.
