Review

This is some lovely doom. I realise that statement is fundamentally flawed and opposite by nature, but it really is. All fuzzy and warm, and surrounded in a haze of smoke.
Black Capricorn make music that sounds like a seventies biker knife fight, man. Classic spaced out riffs that are just down-tempo enough to anchor them within the doom genre, as well as possibly this astral plane of existence. I guarantee that random naked women will be dancing ritualistically around fires if 'Born Under the Capricorn' ever gets played outside at a suitably loud volume. There's even harmonica at one point. Like if Dylan joined Sabbath.
'Tropic of Capricorn' begins subtly enough, with delicate and intricate tones. But it doesn't last. It's all just a false sense of security. A huge, thick, slow and syrupy stoner-doom riff kicks in like a pissed off T-Rex emerging from the trees. It sounds like it's trying to bite an aeroplane in half. Brilliant!
'Capricornica' sounds like a bad acid trip. Paranoid and delusional, it rocks back and forth sweating in a corner. Dirty riffing and a solid bass line lay the foundations, while an uneasy backbeat is the mortar. The whole track is like the comedown from hell.
'Double Star Goatfish' walks in the tracks of 'Tropic...', replete with Layne Staley-esque vocals adding to the queasiness of the situation in that way he did so masterfully, and harrowingly. The riffs on this whole effort are truly exceptional and mind-bending. It's not re-inventing the wheel, but it is painting flames, skulls and other cool shit all over it. Now that's a pretty bad ass wheel.
This is everything I love about doom done right. Black Capricorn know that if you deliver the riffs then the rest will fall into place. It's why we all love the genre so very, very much. Horror imagery, drugs and danger. Planet shaking grooves. Turn on, tune in and drop out.
