Holy Mountain ~ Earth Measures Review

Hailing from Glasgow and originally formed as a two piece, Holy Mountain have been building a reputation since around 2009. Famed for their incredible live shows, including one that spanned two venues, and an after party without stopping once! They now operate as a settled three piece, and are releasing "Earth Measures" through Chemikal Records. Recorded in 17 hours, they have replicated their live feel brilliantly, a relentless blend of Lightning Bolt's off the rails rhythm and Sleep or Sabbath's riff power its as perfect a release you'll hear all year.

Seriously this EP is as incendiary as a pyromaniac working in a matchbox factory, and has more swagger than Sauchiehall Street on a Saturday night.
Riffs churn out with reckless abandon, drums and rhythm lock into grooves of mammoth proportions. Leaving you reaching for the repeat button, this is a steamroller of a release.

There has been a surge of excellent bands emerging from Glasgow/Scotland recently. Sludgelord fav's What The Blood Revealed, Buried Sleeper and now Holy Mountain have had releases that will be sure to feature in my end of year favourites.
Things kick off with the explosive "Gunner" demonstrating perfectly what's in store. It features some of the best riffs you'll hear, packing a mighty punch. "Kegs" follows at a slower pace before gathering momentum and a frenzied finale. The excellently named "Swifty Fuckwit(Pts I+II) is a near 8 minute ride through elements of everything great about stoner/doom music. Riffs crash and heave, swirling rhythms and punishing delivery its clearly a highlight in an ep of many.

Although the entire record is essential the aforementioned "Gunner" and "Silent Hawk"are personal favourites, the latter another epic instrumental voyage through thick riffs and dense atmospheric passages. With the possibility of a full length album in the near future as well Holy Mountain will surely be building on their reputation and laying waste to venues up and down the country.

If your near Glasgow this Saturday the "Earth Measures" release show is on in the city's Mono club. Failing that ensure you pick up a copy of the Ep on various formats through the link below.

Melvins(Lite)-Freak Puke Review

I'm a huge fan of Melvins and have liked nearly everything they've released. Let's face it they laid the foundations years ago that helped shape many band's sound, few have failed to be influenced in some way by them.

I was delighted when news broke that there would not be one but two new Melvins releases this year. The first was issued digitally free from The Scion music website "The Bulls+The Bees" is an excellent example of classic Stoner rock featuring the line up that has recorded the previous three albums.

Melvins (lite) however is a more experimental version of the line up featuring legends, Dale Crover and King Buzzo, this time joined by Trevor Dunn(Fantomas, Mr.Bungle). Dunn plays upright Bass on the entire album, giving a further dimension to the Melvins sound.

It may say "Lite" but really its anything but, don't think this is an album full of gentle soothing songs. At times its classic Melvins rocking hard with the upright bass just adding to the groove and at times driving songs impressively.
Equally it encompasses Avant Garde noise-rock (Inner Ear Rupture), straight up rockers (Leon vs The Revolution ), even combining both elements at times. Witness the riff and boogie that develops in "Baby Won't You, Weird Me Out" followed by some manic bass work and devastating drums. Freak Puke is brilliant start to finish, what comes across is a sense of fun in the recording this album, displaying more spontaneity and diversity than the last three albums. Moments of it are closer to "classic" Melvins, but opinion on their recorded output can often polarise opinion. For any Melvins fan its quite simply essential listening.

This album demonstrates they're still top of their game, after setting the foundations Melvins keep laying the bricks with essential ground-breaking releases.

"Freak Puke" is released through Ipecac on June 5th, and can be ordered from them through the link below. Or purchased from your local independent record store.

Tree Of Sores - A Cry Of Despair

Tree Of Sores are a Doom/Post-Metal band from Leeds, UK featuring the talents of the following members.

Ben - Drums
Joe - Bass
Matt - Guitar/Vox

Having been a big fan of their debut Ep which is still available Here , I was delighted to receive "A Cry Of Despair" to review. One track, clocking in at around half an hour is always an ambitious route to go, but Tree Of Sores pull it off with ease. "A Cry Of Despair", comes across as a flowing combination of two or three movements blended together and evolving naturally. Its stunning stuff, overall it retains the heaviness of  their debut but is at times less reliant on vocals instead a progression in dynamics and instrumentation is evident.

Starting out with crushing guitars and abrasive vocals a pounding rhythm soon is established leading to some haunting guitar work it sets the tone for more to follow. Tree of Sores must really be commended for the quality of this release. Every member excels to provide the listener with a stunning listening experience.

"A Cry Of Despair" takes a more subtle turn around the ten minute mark. A delicate riff builds with chiming momentum giving way to a brooding passage of density and euphoric greatness . Free of vocals, the music carries the song while maintaining the flow . It gives way to more atmospheric moments before gathering in pace again. Ending in brutal fashion with pummelling drums and layers of guitar, eventually fading out in drones of feedback and effects overall its an outstanding accomplishment Tree Of Sores can be proud of. Releasing a long one track. Ep of this quality that has direction and purpose is rare.

"A Cry Of Despair" is available through Witch Hunter records with pre-orders available now with immediate download included. Order on the link below.

Horseback-Half Blood Review

Horseback have been making a habit of releasing excellent, mutli-genre music. Half Blood not only continues that trend but its my favourite release of theirs yet.
This is their first official new release for Relapse records who re-released their first two Ep's as a repackaged joint album The Gorgon Tongue

Half Blood is a glorious journey of psychedelic heavy music. At times its like being on a ride at an amusement park listening to Neurosis while tripped out on LSD.

Huge swirls of psychedelia contrasted with the almost death metal vocals making a real unique and engaging listen. At times sparse and atmospheric it never sits still, even the drone heavy and ambient three-part closer "Hallucigenia" provides enough movement and effects to hold your attention. My favourite track though is "Ajuna", relentless rhythm, folk-ish undertones and swirling guitars combine with some deranged vocals to stunning effect. Essential listening, but then that could be said of the whole album.
Half Blood should see Horseback gain more praise and followers, (rightly so) a prolific and multi-faceted band that have produced another of the year's highlights with "Half Blood". Horseback have outdone themselves here, sit back fasten your safety belts and enjoy the ride.

"Half  Blood" will be released through Relapse on May 8th(USA)/May 21st(UK), and is available to pre-order on the links below.

Black Moth-The Killing Jar Review

Black Moth only came to my attention recently and I was immediately hooked. After snapping up a few singles that were available I was delighted to receive "The Bell Jar" to review.

Playing a brilliant blend of stoner/grunge and psychedelic rock, Black Moth quite simply, rock. Vocals by Harriet Hyde, give them a real edge coming across at times like a female fronted Truckfighters, or  Melissa De Auf Maur collaborating with Fu-manchu . "The Killing Jar" displays more though, proving they're talented enough to carve out their own sound. Riffs chugg along with catchy hooks and powerful vocals. The album was produced by Jim Sclavunos and Dave Sanderson and an excellent job has been done, the album sounding immense with a perfect blend of fuzz and heavy tones.

"The Articulate Dead" opens the album fuzz-drenched guitars, and a Grunge feel letting you know what your in for. It features an astounding tempo change half way through letting rip with a frenzy of rhythm . Straight away its impossible not to be impressed and it doesn't stop there. "Blackbirds Fall" features a massive catchy riff, and stunning musicianship. "Spit Out Your Teeth" is a marvellous psychedelic track with twisted lyrics like the ramblings of an asylum patient.
The quality of the tracks never relents and Black Moth display enough variety in style delivery so things never get repetitive. Other highlights include the furious "Chicken Shit" coming on like Kyuss in their prime, the sheer density of "Blind Faith" and "Honey Lung" . Put simply though "The Killing Jar" rocks front to back, and you'll be hard pressed to hear another album this fuzzalicious all year.

"The Killing Jar" will be released on May 7th on New Heavy Sounds ,and check out more on the links below, Highly recommended and a special mention for the fantastic artwork.

Alpha Male Tea Party -S/T Review

Alpha Male Tea Party are a Math-Rock/Experimental Band from Liverpool, UK featuring the following members.

Tom Peters - Guitar
Dan Leadbetter - Bass
Greg Chapman - Drums

Bursting out with "Bakers Dozen " this album has immediate effect . Throbbing basslines propel the track forward while a combination of crushing riffs, intricate melody and a spacey feel help pack a mighty punch. It never relents, track after track of quality there isn't any filler here.

What sets AMTP apart from other groups is both their musicianship and also blending different elements together so well. "Its All About The Throat" features both shouted vocals reminiscent of Dananananaykroyd(now split Glasgow Nutters) and tripped out theremin  to super effect.
I had only heard one song before getting my mits on this album the fabulous titled "Depressingly Shit Lunchtime Sandwich" . Its probably the most catchy track on offer, but I found nearly all the album to be essential some tracks bettering the aforementioned . Most are heavier too but this still might not be everyones cup of tea(pardon the pun). If however you love off-kilter rhythms, innovative song writing and stunning musicianship this is for you. At times its hard to imagine how they keep pulling catchy riffs and melodies out the bag, but they do time and again

The majority of the tracks are instrumental but the occasional vocals add to the feel of the album. You can tell AMTP enjoy playing this music and it carries over making listening a hugely enjoyable experience. Songs like "Griff Rees Holmes" and "Jason Fucked The Argonauts" are guaranteed head nodders, relentless in delivery dazzling and infectious. Even the song titles put a smile on my face .

Liverpool has produced a few decent-ish bands in the past who achieved moderate success. Alpha Male Tea Party deserve plenty of success themselves and they are much more fun than the Beatles ever were. The album is available from 21st April from their Bandcamp on the link below. I highly recommend it.

Dead Sea Apes-Band To Check Out

Dead Sea Apes are a experimental Post/ Psyche-rock band from Manchester UK. They are comprised of the following members.

Brett Savage - Guitar
Nick Harris - Bass
Chris Hardman - Drums

Dead Sea Apes are not a generic Post-rock band, they don't really fall into the category at all. But as is often the case if you play instrumental music, that's it post-rock box in you go. I'm going to invent a new genre and call it "music". Two sub-genres, "Good-Music" and "Bad-music",  Justin Bieber belongs in the latter, Dead Sea Apes very much the former.

Okay rant over(for now), what Dead Sea Apes conjure is terrific, dynamic brooding music without the clichés of quiet/loud/quiet. They create cinematic soundscapes epic in length and feel and on new EP "Astral House" a rockier, more urgent mood at times. They've been pretty busy of late and have two new releases to show for it. The already mentioned "Astral House" ep is available through BandCamp. An album "Lupus" is available through american Label Deep Water Acres . Both are excellent releases from a band unafraid to push the limits of music, and stand out from the crowd.

"Bikini Atoll" is a favourite of mine showcasing their heavier side, full of Psyche patterns and dynamic riffage, while driven by rhythmic basslines. Just one example of greatness from Dead Sea Apes. "Dead Fingers Talk" features more sublime bass work and has a desert rock feel similar to Across Tundras or Earth's recent output.

Lupus in general is much more ambient and cinematic, starting with the stark and bleak sounding "Pharmakon" setting the tone. Songs clock in at up to 16 minutes unfolding gently, layers of atmospherics envopling the senses. Some huge riffs creep up on you during "Something To Do With Death" to stunning effect, dense and atmospheric its another of many highlights. I recommend both releases highly and why not start with their debut, "Soy Dios" which is available on the pay what you like deal. Lupus is available through the link below and price includes International shipping.

Blacklisters - BLKLSTRS Review

Blacklisters are a Noise-rock/alternative band from Leeds featuring.

Billy Mason Wood: Vocals
Dan Beesley: Guitar
Owen Griffiths: Bass
Alistair Stobbart: Drums

There's no messing about with Blacklisters they kick in the door and fuck you in the ear with their caustic dirty swagger. I've been following them since their Belt Party ep and now with their debut album they are ready to give us all a punishing but enjoyable experiance with "BLKLSTRS"

Featuring massive scuzzy riffs and pulsating bass lines comparisons to the great Jesus Lizard can be made, Blacklisters have enough of their own attitude to ensure they stamp their authority all over this album and your head for that matter.

With track names like "Clubfoot By Kasabian" , "Ask Yourself a Question if the Answer is Go Fuck Yourself" a twisted sense of humour is also evident.
The former opens the album in riotous fashion swaggering round like a bare-knuckle brawler while maintaining a sludgey groove.
You can picture vocalist, Billy Mason Wood wide-eyed and demented at their shows with an impressive yell and growl delivery. Its not just him you've to contend with though, his mates back him up with stabbing guitars and pummelling rhythm its a fight you can't win but you'll have a huge (toothless) grin on your face after.

"Trick Fuck" is furious and relentless the riff absolutely destroying everything in its way. A song destined to be filling floors in underground clubs for years to come and inciting circle pit moshing when played live, devastating! Blacklisters though appreciate the vitriolic rage they've unleashed and close the album with the more laid back instrumental "Shush" soothing the wounds and allowing you to recover. Its still intense though and preformed brilliantly not really a gentle post-rock song, its crashes and heaves more like recent touring buddies Pelican. BLKLSTRS delivers on all fronts and if you think your hard enough, let it into your life and enjoy.

Blacklisters excellent Debut is released on April 24th on Brew records and can be pre-ordered in various formats on the links below.

Mental Architects- Interview

Hi easter is over and normal service has resumed, during the break i caught up with Bulgaria's Mental Architects who's excellent new album i reviewed Here . Check out what they had to say and if you havent already go listen to thier music.

PJ-First off let me say thanks for taking time to join us today and welcome.

 MA-

Nope, thank YOU for having us on Sludgelord.

Pj-So Aaron Harris produced your new album celebrations and Chris Common produced your last Ep. How did the hook up with two legends happen. And what was it like Working with them.

MA- Well it all happened through the web. We sought out Chris through the page of the studio he holds with Matt Bayles in Seattle, dropped him a line and we did it . Even though it took some time to work out the scheduling the mix and master of the EP happened in two days. Chris is very professional and very quick, we gave him total freedom when it came down to the mixes and he didn’t let us down. He is the reason the EP sounds the way it does which really challenged us when we were thinking about the next release because it truly was the best recording of us that we had heard up to that point.

The hook up with Aaron happened while we were browsing the web and stumbled upon an announcement he had made through his web page -http://aaronharris-audio.com/ He said he was free at the moment and if someone was interested in working with him should send some demos. We were thinking about another EP at the time but when he heard the demos, he encouraged us to do a whole record, so that was that. If we should put our experience in working with Aaron in one word, that word should be “awesome” but put on a galactic scale. Thanks to him we were able to record 2/3 of the album by ourselves, he provided great insight on structuring the songs, he helped us find a sound that related to all of us, he got Bryant from Red Sparowes on the record not mentioning that he did a kick ass job on the mixes and got James Plotkin to master the record. As we said – “awesome on a galactic scale”!

Pj-Like myself you’re fans of ASIWYFA, and being Irish myself was delighted to hear you also like Kasper Rosa, Bats Adebsi Shank . Has the irish scene had an effect on Bulgarian bands in general or just yourselves.

 MA-
Well, you could never tell, there are so many bands, so many people but we have quite a few musician friends who are definitely ASIWYFA fanatics. For us the whole Irish attitude towards creating music was really appealing because it’s very immediate, it’s dynamic and it’s emotional. It relates to our cultural background. You guys get straight to the point with the first hit, chord or word. And all of the bands you mentioned are like that. That’s something that should be pointed as reference when considering ASIWYFA’s popularity. People were sick and bored of This Will Destroy You clones and that’s what got us into Irish bands - they are (pardon the cliche) “real” with all of their flaws and everything. Don’t get us wrong we love Lite, Russian Circles and a lot of different bands the obsess over musicianship and composition but when it comes down to well structured composition bursting with emotion, for us Irish bands really stand out! It’s worth mentioning that Belfast is the only city (in recent years) that successfully in our opinion defined a sound which hadn’t happened for a long time and we gather that all comes from the strong connection between musicians in the area. So, we salute you for that!

Pj- What's the scene in Sofia like is it easy to get gigs and have you a good following there.

MA- Sofia has a population of about 2 million people and rock music (let alone instrumental rock) doesn’t have the legacy opposed that most Western countries have but we our friends support us and anyone who comes to our shows and doesn’t know us personally, we consider  a great bonus and it time he tends to become our friend.

When it comes down to getting gigs – it’s fairly easy. We talked with Steve from Khuda when we played together here and he said that Leeds (for example) has 40 shows on a Saturday and here (Sofia in particular) you have a choice of about 5 to 10. The trend is that the number of shows/venues/promoters are constantly growing. Definitely we still lack the diversity of shows a city like Dublin can offer.

Pj- Personally I feel globally there's a real surge in talent both in Instrumental bands and other genres, do you feel the internet has helped expose bands and made it easier to be heard?

MA-
Most definitely! We are a perfect example of that. The thing is that the talent has always been there and the Internet has helped expose all of it - some better than other.Heavily touring bands kind of look down on others who don’t because in their eye they – “don’t pay their dues”. But all of us have families and immediate real-life responsibilities which can’t be ignored. If it wasn’t for the Internet we would definitely not be where we are now in terms of popularity or otherwise.

PJ- There is a great sense of energy present on the album, do you try to put this across when playing live?

MA- Well, the songs were written to be played live, so I guess what we wanted to do with the record was to try and capture the feeling we had while we were writing the songs. At that time we were definitely exhilarated, so thank you for pointing that out.

Pj - So have you touring plans lined up or any festival appearances, personally I'd love to see Mental Architects playing in the Uk sometime.

MA- Well, we wouldn’t want to jinx it but we have around 10 dates planned in Romania, Greece & Bulgaria before the summer season and a possible Irish tour with Kasper Rosa in autumn but let’s wait and see.

Pj- Thanks for joining us at Sludgelord today, have you a message for anyone reading that hasn't heard your music you would like to pass on.

 We’re available for children’s parties.

You Slut!-Medium Bastard Review

You Slut! are an Instrumental Post-Rock/Math-Rock band from Nottingham featuring the talents of the fantastically named.

Vanilla Christ
Sato D'Angelo
Rhyll Styzer
Dr Marc Zwei

Its been a bit of a wait since You Slut! released their debut "Critical Meat". So it was with great anticipation I received "Medium Bastard" and it doesn't disappoint. Full of furious riffing, demented rhythm and a sense of mischief, You Slut! continue to make quality energetic music that punches below the belt, and demands your attention.

There been a bit of a deluge of Instrumental releases lately, Pelican, TFATD and Mental Architects amongst others. "Medium Bastard" stands alongside them while still managing to offer something different.
You Slut! haven't changed the formula from "Critical Meat" too much but if it ain't broke.. etc. Although there is a more mature approach to constructing the songs here, riffs at times dominating tracks rather than off-kilter madness, although there's still plenty of that present. Finding the balance of rip your face off riffs and mind bending instrumentation is what You Slut! do so well here.

The songs on "Medium Bastard" are kept short, so there's no unnecessary repetition creating an instant impact with each track. Highlights include the flurries of melody on "Fifzteen", showcasing their gentler side . The barrage of riffery on "Magnifiererer", the drive an menace of "Elton Chong". The chirpy "Sellshock" also gets the head nodding combining refined melody with dazzling guitar work throughout.

I had intended naming just one or two tracks here as highlights but its difficult to leave any out, the massive riffs on "Shopping Placenta" for instance or final track "More Than One Seamless" kitchen sink approach, cramming more riffs and dynamics in one track than most albums.

You Slut! have proved they are another essential band in what's becoming a highly populated genre of music. With touring plans likely to keep them busy throughout the year I'd check if they're coming to a town near you. Armed with the tracks on "Medium Bastard" their live show is sure to be explosive!

"Medium Bastard" is released on April 12 on Stressed Sumo records and can be Pre-Ordered on the link below.

Mental Architects-Celebrations Review

Mental Architects are an Instrumental Post-rock/math-rock band from Sofia, Bulgaria. They are comprised of the following members.

Tony - guitars
Niki - bass/ keys
Max - drums/ electronics

Mental Architects came to my attention when I learnt Aaron Harris of Isis had produced and mixed this latest album. Harris has a hand in many things and generally the projects he's involved in are high of quality. "Celebrations" is no different, attacking the senses with a barrage of angular riffage and upbeat tempos this is an another to add to the list.  Also Bryant Clifford(Isis, Red Sparowes), contributed additional synths to the album and Joe from Giraffes? Giraffes added guitars on "When Sound Turns into A Person.."

Okay so the first thing that struck me was it sounds an awful lot like And So I Watch You From Afar. No bad thing though as my fellow countrymen ASIWYFA are not only one of my favourite bands but damn nice chaps.

There are other influences here, the relentless off-kilter rhythm of Hella can be heard and the powerful bass driven sound of Isis for example. Mental Architects, give the music their own feel, and are just influenced by some great music however and their passion comes through listening to "Celebrations".

Opener "Spell Shelter" is infectious with its melodic pattern and rhythm. "Here is where, where better?" ,builds momentum before unleashing killer riffs and intricate guitar melodies.
At times I did have to check ASIWYFA hadn't sneaked an album out without me noticing, but the band admit their an influence and it makes me proud a band from my own country are influencing others around the globe.

"Launch The Avalanche" is another highlight with its sprawling drums and spiralling riffs creating a marvellous melodic and heavy track. Lots of bands have started making instrumental music influenced by those I've already mentioned and the likes of Tera Melos, but Mental Architects do it so well its hard to ignore. Tracks are generally kept to under five minutes so there's a flow to the album and nothing out stays its welcome.
One of my favourites though is the longer "Caves of Keys", with its Isis-like opening melody, bass driven it unfolds though atmospheric passages, unleashing some of the best moments of the album, and even a gentle nod to Faith No More half way though. "Meth-rock" brings the riff attack back with a few "Hey Heys" thrown in, a furious adrenaline rush of a track.

This is a band you can tell that will be a joy to see perform live, high energy explosive stuff, crowds will love it. Bulgaria is one of the few places I've been outside of the UK, if I make it back I'll be checking these guys out live. Although with an album this good I expect to see them touring throughout Europe and beyond.

"Celebrations" will be unleashed on April 2nd and will be available through their Bandcamp and website, I highly recommend you give these Bulgarian mentalists a listen.

Ufomammut-Oro: Opus Primum Review

Ufomammut are a three piece band from Italy who play a unique style of Psychedelic Doom/Sludge. Featuring the talents of Urlo, Poia and Vita.

They have been creating challenging dynamic music since 1999. Always standing at the forefront of experimental music they are set to unleash what will be their most ambitious and potentially best work yet. Oro: Opus Primum is the first of two albums they will release this year. "Oro: Opus Alter" will follow around September. Its an understatement to say I'm a fan of this band, bordering on obsession would be more accurate.

2009's "Eve" was critically acclaimed and rightly so, a single track split into five movements it was a stunning example of doom-laden genius. However Oro has arrived and bettered it, more focused its a enthralling listen beginning to end. Ufomammut's strength lies in creating extremely expansive multi-faceted music with layers of atmospheric tones and textures. Vocals blend in with the waves of sonic interpretation, vintage electronics are used to bring forth a futuristic and awe inspiring sound.

Oro in full will be ten tracks, here the first instalment begins with the brooding atmospheric "Empireum", which feels like a birthing of sorts. Slowly weaving its way into your senses pulsating, and spacious it evolves to a tribalistic rhythm before crushing guitars and effects bring "Oro" to life. 13 minutes in length "Empireum" builds relentlessly, wailing and melodic vocals drift in and out, it finishes in echoes of distortion and effects.

"Aureum" continues opening with a dirge like monolithic riff, bringing to mind the tone of Steven O'Mally. It's huge distorted bass rumbling, the track kicks up a notch creating a glorious sludge behemoth . Vocals ring out in tribal fashion as the music constantly shifts tempo and intensity.
An infectious head nodding groove breaks out half way through, pulsating bass, pounding drums the track flows effortlessly until ambient effects, crazed dialogue and huge riffs close the track.
"Infearnatural" is next, relentless crushingly heavy, sonically mind altering a repetitive rhythm blended with psychedelic effects and minimal vocals one of the shorter tracks but by no means less impressive.

"Oro: Opus Primum" is seamless tracks merge together, unfolding as intended as a stream of music to be experienced as a whole. With the second instalment due later I did wonder if originally they intended to release it as one work. Given the complexity and quality of this first instalment its probably best we get a chance to enjoy it fully before "Oro: Opus Alter" completes the journey later in the year.

Infearnatural leads into" Magickon", sounds are reprised from the opening of the album, before an emotive melody pours out, cymbals shimmer and crash, gradually a beat unfolds, bass humming it develops into a rhythm before ending full of punishing slabs of riffs, giving way to "Mindomine".
A jagged looping rhythm with eerie vocals the final track here ends a glorious album, full of mystical atmospheric sounds creating a otherworldly feeling. Guitars crash in, when they do its as if the world is ending, spellbinding in delivery.

Ufomammut continue to weave sonic tapestries of the highest magnitude. Creating an album of depth, stunning musicianship and spaced out groove. The artwork also is painstakingly detailed and beautiful. Designed by the Malleus collective(which includes members of the band), the art reflects the music perfectly.
I've banded the term album of the year about more than usual for this time of year, but Oro: Opus Primum is a certainty for my end of year list.I now await, Oro: Opus Alter with anticipation.

Oro: Opus Primum will be released on Vinyl through the Supernatural Cat label with Neurot Recordings handling the Cd version. Links to both labels are below, as well as further information on this stunning band.

Incoming Cerebral Overdrive-Le Stelle: A Voyage Adrift Review

Sometimes an album comes along and catches you completely off guard. I've been a fan of Ufomammut and their label, Supernatural Cat for some time but I only recently was alerted to Incoming Cerebral Overdrive(I.C.O). I had been anticipating the latest Ufomammut album greatly, but "Le Stelle:A Voyage Adrift" is worthy of equal excitement and praise.

Controverso, I.C.O's last album was mostly an sludge/psych tinged mathcore affair, furious and brilliant they've developed and expanded the outer limits of their sound on this latest album.
They have now delivered a stellar album full of angular riffs, psyche textures mind altering experimentation and above all pummelling songs.
The sounds crafted are mesmeric, songs grab you pining you to the wall screaming before spinning you round the room. Drums and bass prod and sprawl, riffs churn out with relentless abandon.
Vocals are almost an extension of the instrumentation, at times aggressive, melodic and almost demonic in the same song. There is also an incredible sense of direction present amongst the madness. Only one song strays past the 5 minute mark but what they achieve in the relatively short songs is enough to melt your mind while also managing to flow cohesively.

Opener "Mirzam" kicks things off with a powerful spiral riff, low end bass and synth effects. It quickly shifts into overdrive, pounding its way into your brain. If your heads not nodding in approval already, you should probably check your pulse.
"Sirius" enlists psychedelic swirls of synth, mixed with a heavy sludge groove. Cosmic passages blend with dexterous drumming before pile-driving its way to a climax.
By now I was already blown away, the combination of murky rhythm, off- kilter riffs and spaced out effects ticking all my boxes rendering me in a sludge filled euphoria.
"Betelgeuse" continues the theme, showcasing their dexterity with their instruments, heavy moog stabs crushing your senses. The opening catchy riff, giving way to another journey through muti-dimensional dynamics and power.
"Kochab" is next beginning with a delicate melody soothing the battered eardrums before a massive chugging riff explodes and the assault begins again. One of the more straight ahead heavy songs it still sounds like little experienced before, Samuele Storai turning in a man possessed vocal towards the end."Adhara" is bruising, spaced out riffs and rhythms that crash and collide, It finally relents with waves of eerie synths before finishing in furious fashion, brain left oozing from your ears.

The ability to produce track after track of unique and relentless music cannot be understated. This is one of the most enjoyable albums I've heard in a long time.
"Pherkad" is monolithic, dense rhythm with an unforgiving delivery, wails of feedback and distortion close the track out.
Next up "Sirius B" has a space- punk feel, with a Brent Hinds sounding vocal, fans of Mastodon and Dillinger for that matter could find much to love here. However I.C.O stand proud in their own right, few bands are making barrier pushing music this heavy, mind bending and relentless.

"Poloaris" sees a slower pace but again stunning vocal growls and echoing guitar parts. It finishes with melodic choral like vocals and swathed in synths.
"Bellatrix" has a pure rocknroll opening riff and is one of the most catchy songs here, while maintaining the general spacey feel. Compelling, driving and above all rocking, destined to be a favourite of their live act.
The ten minute "Rigel" closes the album, musically it feels like an epic voyage through time and space, battles raging, armies of alien species marching forth singing battle hymns of distant galaxies . A soundtrack to an unwritten Sci-fi cult classic, which in turn could apply to the whole album.

ICO have delivered another contender for my album of the year list, a stunning piece of multi-layered genius. If your unfamiliar with Supernatural Cat records their bands and collective endeavours this could be a great introduction.

"Le Stelle:A Voyage Adrift"  will be released through Supernatural Cat on May 7th. Controvesro is available now in good independent stores or direct from Supernatural Cat on the links below.

Torche Harmonicraft-Review

I am delighted to be able to bring you my thoughts on Torche's latest album. Its now somewhat unbelievably been four years since "Meanderthal" ripped through the heavy music world . Since then we've had a few split releases and the "Songs for Singles" Ep, all excellent editions but forever held up and compared to Meandrathral .

Torche have returned now though with their first full album since that classic and while some thought "Meanderthal" may not ever be matched "Harmonicraft" is here to devastate that theory.
What Torche have crafted is both arguably better than their previous classic and also probably the Album Of the Year.
Honestly 2012 has produced some killer releases already, Harmonicraft beats them all hands down. Everyone else the stakes have been raised, bar set this is what you have to beat.

I could go on for hours dissecting each track, praising the combinations of power and melody listing each riff or moment of brilliance, putting claims forward for each track to be the best and so on. Its such a joyous experience listening to Harmonicraft however the time for in depth analysis can come later. The involuntary smile on your face, the countless hell yeahs uttered, the headbanging fist pumping joy these tracks bring are way more important than me pouring out adjective after adjective.

Harmonicraft is the natural progression of Torche's music everything I expected of this album I got in abundance, with a whole lot more thrown in for good measure.
Torche have always straddled the line between sludge riffery and sugar coated pop sensibility. At times here they mash the two together so perfectly it feels as if  rainbows will explode from your ears. I imagine the artist was inspired by the music, coming up with some kind of pokemon on LSD induced world for the album cover, its perfect for the magic that comes from listening to Harmonicraft.

My jaw hit the floor so many times during this album, the title track alone, the glorious slow burning opening off "Reverse Inverted" the riff assault of "Sky Trails" and "Walk It Off", as stated though far too many to list.
The recruitment of new guitarist, Andrew Elstner has added a further dimension of Phychadelic riffs and beefed up the attack again. "Songs for Singles" I felt missed the additional guitarist, not the case here as Steve Brooks and Andrew trade riffs and bounce off each other with stunning effect.
What we have is a re-energised Torche armed with a collection of songs that will make your head explode, bodily functions fail and fall in love with them for it.

Harmonicraft will be available from Volcom and your local Independent Store From April 24th. Get your calender marked for the day Torche change the game.

Ancestors In Dreams and Time-Review

Ancestors are a Prog/Pysch/Rock band from L.A , America. They feature the following members .
Justin Maranga – Guitar, Vocals
Nick Long – Bass, Vocals
Jason Watkins – Organ, Piano, Vocals
Matt Barks – Moog & Modular Synthesizers, Guitar, Vocals
Daniel Pouliot - Drums

When Ancestors have a new release your never really sure what it going to sound like. Apart from being excellent as they've yet to disappoint me, Earlier work, "Neptune with Fire" and "Of Sound Mind" mixed stoner like rock with Prog elements and heavy psych tones. Their last release "Invisible White" lent more towards an ambient sound, lighter in delivery it was received well but took some off guard.

I'm delighted to say that new album "In Dreams and Time, is a combination of all the elements Ancestors have excelled at and more the result is epic.
I should thank Justin from the band for this review copy first of all, but let's get into the music.
There are 6 tracks on In Dreams And Time, the shortest of which is 6 minutes and longest near 20 minutes!

The album starts with "Whispers", slow paced with a thick bass line and atmospheric organ work, easing its way in before getting heavier while maintaining a sense of melody. "Whispers" overall is a return to a sludgier heavier sound with more aggressive vocal parts, its an indication of what's to come. Towards the end, the track shifts up a gear culminating in a prog infused rock out. Swirling atmospherics, dense organ and murky riffs the track leads into the "The Last Return" and an immediate change of tactic.
The shortest song here opens with delicate piano and haunting female vocals with a beautiful refrain and introduction of solitary guitar line its a moving and mesmeric song. Ending with deranged piano parts and guitars crashing by now you know your listening to something special.

This isn't an album to pump yourself up for a trip to the gym or a party weekend. Grandiose in style, its an album to bask in headphones on lights out that will reveal more with each listen.

"Corryvreckan" is the centrepiece of In Dreams and Time a heavy prog-rock track featuring stabs of  organ, crushing guitars and melodic vocals engaging you until the final notes,Stunning stuff
The appeal of this album is although each track is long nothing is wasted or repeated needlessly. In Dreams and Time evolves and unfolds as you listen, moving and shifting it demands full attention throughout.
"On The Wind" follows with a heavy Pink Floyd influence, piano and overlapping vocals leading to a psychedelic work out showcasing some blistering guitar work.
"Running in Circles" continues merging elements of prog heaviness with an tribal drum pattern half way through before ending triumphantly it gives way to the Epic "First Light".

20 minute songs can often be full of repetition or ambient drone but its not the case here. Featuring moments of soulful guitar solos and church like organ its spacious, monumental and moving, a fitting end to this fantastic album.

Ancestors have combined all their influences and previous work to create an album of Epic proportions. Mature and dynamic "In Dreams and Time" is an album to lose yourself in. While they've maintained the heavier element of their sound they've blasted it into the stratosphere and beyond.

2012 just keeps, this is another essential release of what is gearing up to be a monumental year.
In dreams and Time will be available from Tee-Pee records on the link below. As well as your local independent store .

If These Trees Could Talk- Red Forest -Review

If These Trees Could Talk (or These Trees,as I'll be referring to them to save my typing fingers!) are an Instrumental Post-Rock band from Ohio, America. They feature the following members.

Zack Kelly- Drums
Jeff Kalal- Guitar
Tom Fihe- Bass
Cody Kelly- Guitar
Michael Socrates- Guitar

As I'm a sucker for this type of music I was delighted to hear These Trees were gearing up to release a new album.
They came to my attention in 2009 with their excellent "Above the Earth, Below the Sky" album. On March 20th they will release "Red Forest" and its a stunning work of dynamic angular Post-rock.

These Trees, have on this album displayed a more mature approach to crafting the songs, everything evolves naturally and with devastating effect.
One of the defining elements of These Trees sound is having three guitarists all pulling together but with different tones and parts all contributing to create intricate melodies and driving rhythms .

Its not all about the three axe-slingers though , the bass is prominent throughout and the drums are both powerful and subtle when the songs require.
Its part of the appeal of These Trees that they know when the song requires pulling back. Making use of space when needed to let the feel of the song come through, not being in a rush to get to a heavier part or crescendo . The album works best as a whole seamlessly weaving its way around your senses ,unfolding like some ethereal dream. The imagery of the title and artwork represent the music perfectly. You can imagine floating over fog-filled dense forests, walking through fallen leaves, moisture hanging in the air, when listening to "Red Forest"

Its difficult sometimes for Instrumental bands to conjure any sense of theme or story to the music. Often its not intended, but These Trees have succeeded in doing this, you feel there's a story to tell through the music a journey , one things for sure its one I'm enjoying and when the end approaches I'm ready to travel it again.

I received this as a review copy and it made such an impression I Pre-ordered the Cd version after one song. Not something that happens very often, Its released on the March 20th and can be Pre-ordered on the link below.
I believe Vinyl copies will be available also, and the usual digital outlets will be selling it. Check out Red Forest below and more on If These Trees Could Talk .

The Fierce And The Dead-On VHS Review

The Fierce and the dead (or TFATD ) have been featured previously at Sludgelord Here

Well now they are about to release their new EP "On VHS" the first recorded output since the addition of second guitarist Steve Cleaton.

I like and listen to a lot of "instrumental" bands, but TFATD are incomparable to other non vocal bands. Their music has a range of influences never adopting standard tactics ensuring they will not be easily pigeon-holed. This Ep though only four tracks will take you on a journey through space, battling evil, surfing some waves and gazing at sunsets and night skies together like some time travelling entity.
These are the feelings I get from listening to "On VHS" a testament to the quality and uniqueness of the music.

Steve Cleaton has helped add a bit of an edge and heavier feel to TFATD, allowing Matt Stevens to deliver some well timed moments of genius and less reliance on the loops.
Kev Feazey also kills it here walking all over the EP,never flashy but providing the foundations for Matt and Steve to weave their magic. At times the bass grabs your attention as much though, a real group effort by all.

666...6 opens proceedings featuring some duelling of melodic and downright evil guitar work a real sense of urgency and focus apparent a stunning start. The aptly named "Hawaii" is next heavy riffs offset with some glorious intricate rhythms and surf-rock guitar. On Vhs builds from a gentler start to a spectacular prog fuelled climax leading you through some journey of otherworldly magnitude . Closer "Part 3" is more laid back featuring some sublime slide guitar easing its way into your ears before giving way to a triumphant section . It shifts back and forth from the gentle and heavier sections. A fitting end to this EP demonstrating the inability to second guess TFATD and where they're heading. If your a fan of forward thinking music of any kind "On VHS" is a must have.

TFATD have further enhanced their reputation and if justice is done more will learn of their talent to produce excellent music. "On VHS" is available on a ltd edition Pre-order Cd though you may have to be quick. Otherwise it will be available on Bandcamp on the name your price deal. Check it out and more on TFATD on the links below.

Black Breath- Sentenced To Life Album Review

Black Breath are a Seattle based Death-n-Roll/hardcore band who everyone should be familiar with by now. They first blazed on the scene with the  Razor to Oblivion EP and I like many have been following closely ever since.
So Black Breath are back with a little more death and a bit less roll, and the follow up to 2010's highly acclaimed "Heavy Breathing". Fans won't be disappointed  though as "Sentenced To Death" goes straight for the throat and doesn't relent for the duration of this album.

Recorded again at the famous God City studio under the helm of the workaholic Kurt Ballou, Black Breath have upped the speed of the buzzsaw riffs and focused and condensed the songs into shorter sharper blasts of  rage.
"Feast of The Damned" blasts things off, with breakneck speed, gang vocals and relentless drumming. Its sets the tone for proceedings as there's hardly a break from the pace. The title track and "Forced Into Possession" follow on ,grimy guitars and harrowing vocals by Nate McAdams . "Home Of The Grave" slows things down slightly with a infectious mid song groove, "Endless Corpse" also switches tempo throughout with some eerie guitar tones and a doom like mid section.

The frantic riffing and barrage of drums returns on "Mother Abyss" which is almost an old school hardcore song. Lyrics spat out with venom and impossible speed. By this time your dizzy with the onslaught of riffs, and fury.

Listening to "Sentenced To Life" is like being smashed in the face with a hammer and having broken glass rubbed in the wounds. "Doomed" and "The Flame" inflict further punishment , the latter featuring some blistering guitar work.
"Obey" closes the album, a spoken vocal intro gives way to a unholy beast of a song. Such is the infectious nature of the album once finished you find yourself playing it again and again. I almost was digging out my old bullet belt and denim cut-off to fully immerse myself in the listening experience.

"Sentenced to life" helps erase the memory of Nu-metal taking you back to a time pre-Fred Durst. Although its no retro-fest as Black Breath are breathing new life into this form of Heavy music, along with bands like All Pigs Must Die and Trap Them forging a new wave of abrasive metal . This album will appeal to thrashers, hardcore heads, old school metallers, sludge+doom fans such is the quality and simple fact it rocks like a Bastard! Black Breath have created an album that again will feature in many end of year best of lists. Be sure to check tour dates and if playing near you miss them at your peril.

"Sentenced To Life" is available through Southern Lord records, and can be ordered directly on the links below.

Geiser-Bipolar Ep Review

Geiser are a 5 piece band from
Arnhem-Nijmegen, Holland. Featuring the following members.

Huibert der Weduwen - Bass
Daan Prins - Guitar
Gerben Elburg - Baritone Guitar
Yoran van Boheemen - Drums
Kars Penninx - Vocals

Geiser describe their sound as Post-Psycho-Cock-Sludge-Metal-Noise and bizarre as it is I'm not going to argue .
Bipolar is their debut and is a fantastic release combining a range of influences to come up with a varied and highly enjoyable Ep.

There are elements of Melvins,Neurosis, Mike Patton present on these 5 tracks. Opener "Pilgrim" is a slow sludge filled dirge full of excellent musicianship. Bass heavy and sparse its a lumbering hypnotic song, next track "Paragon" is bizarre, in a good way though.
Starting like an Angel Dust era FNM , it twists and turns incorporating many shifts in style and tempo and strange sludge vocals, another top track.
"Flint is next , fuzz fuelled guitar and hi-hat giving way another slice of Melvins/jesus lizard rock. There's also an element of Sub Pop grunge in its heyday evident on the e.p ,think Mudhoney,or Tad, rather than Nirvana .

I haven't heard too many bands from Holland using this style but i imagine it will gain them fans around the world and I'm sure their live shows would be quite an experience .
The track "Stranger" has a heavy Neurosis influence at first, slow building with a pained vocal its a bit of a release from the schizophrenic style and also the longest song here at just over 7 minutes. It ends in a psych style freak out and is probably my favourite track here.
"Weightless ends things in similar style heavy bass, thick guitars and slow-paced building towards a feedback filled climax. Another top song, to end what is a highly impressive debut.
Bipolar may have elements of different styles and familiar bands but its executed in a way that's unique you may not hear anything else like it.

The EP is available from bandcamp for a reasonable price, I recommend checking it out right away on the link below.

Scott Holmes -We used to paint stars In the sky-Review

Scott Holmes is a musician from Arbroath, Scotland. He has been featured on Sludglord previously Here .
Scott now has released his debut album "We Used To Paint Stars In The Sky" and its a brilliant mixture of Post-Rock and Ambient Indie Rock.

The album title fits the music perfectly, as Scot paints soundscapes full of textures and melody . Starting out Scott intended to make a post-rock record, but his influences and desire to incorporate them has seen him make a unique record.

Fans of Mogwai, Russian Circles will appreciate the instrumental post rock of songs like "Levels Of Greatness" "Death Of an Orchid" . The former is my favourite track on this album its forever on repeat on my Ipod. The track has a wonderful bounce to it and its fast becoming one of my favourite songs period. There's more here as Scott puts a lot into his music, opener "Doorway To Tomorrow" is a gentle melodic song with Scott singing, laying his soul out.

"October" starts out with the sound of gentle waves ,singing birds and features soft female vocals. "High On A Hill" is in essence a Scottish folk song with Scott singing in a Scots brogue .
"Death Of an Orchid" has a darker feel with layers of guitar giving more of a Pelican feel to the song.

"Signals", "Always The Last to Know" and the title track could grace any Explosions In The Sky album. Scott puts his own stamp on the songs though. Often a soft vocal or the abundance of melodies cascading down through the tracks makes his work instantly recognisable.
I have singled out some tracks, but really this is an album of quality that should be enjoyed in full.

Its refreshing to hear an album that stands out in the Post-Rock world, and Scott has made a diverse and fantastic album that fans of many genres can enjoy. "We Used To Paint Stars In The Sky" is available from Bandcamp ,Cd copies should be on sale soon also.
