Desolate Pathway - "Valley of the King" & "Into The Realms" (Reviews)

By: Richard Maw

Album Type: Full Length & Single
Dates Released: 14/11/2015
& 11/03/2016
Label: Independent

“Valley of The King” CD//DD & “Into The Realms” CD//DD track listing:

“Valley of the King”

1). The Valley of the King
2). Desolate Pathway
3). Forest of Mirrors
4). Last of My Kind (The Ring Keeper)
5). Season of the Witch
6). King of Vultures
7). Shadow of the Tormentor
8). Upon the Throne of Lights

“Into The Realms”

1). Into the Realms of Poseidon
2). Tales of Glaucus

“Valley of The King” Review:

Desolate Pathway entered the annals of recorded metal history with this, their debut full length, from the mind and hands of Pagan Altar alumni Vince Hempstead and band mates. Surfacing over a year ago, this record is grandiose in vision and scope. It takes in a fully realised fantasy concept story regarding a prince fighting his way to his rightful throne (“The Throne of Lights”). As such, it should be approached as a concept record, but of course, the songs work as stand alone pieces as well. The title track opens strongly- and includes a scene setting voice over, the band's titular theme song follows and displays some fine changes of pace, lovely soloing and well delivered vocals. The sound is also crisp and clear- a bonus as so much doom gets obscured in a veil of production murk.

Forest of Mirrors has an insistent rhythm that chugs its way into your consciousness- and good harmony vocals to boot. This mixes and matches trad metal to doom with great effect and brings out a great performance form all band members. “Last of My Kind” is a different proposition- clocking in as it does at over six minutes. The track builds up from an interesting clean opening to a feel of epic doom for the first chorus and then a time change. This is complex and challenging stuff for doom- particularly for those of the tribe who mainly listen to two chord riffs played by musicians who don't know many more than that. The track then adopts a circular pattern approach- as the best metal does, it should be noted.

The trad riffs of “Season of The Witch” hit the sweet spot- just the right mix of Maiden meeting Candlemass, most likely in some kind of enchanted forest! Some good changes break up the full on gallop nicely and ready you for the solo that weaves expertly over the drop in tempo. “King of Vultures” continues the story, and yes, wizards are mentioned. Much slower in approach than the preceding track, it adds an ebb and flow element to the record and this works extremely well, allowing the listener (me!) to immerse themselves fully in the experience of the record.

“Shadow of The Tormentor” has some rather evil sounding riffs to go with a strong and insistent hook. The clean section enhances the heavier parts- dynamics are used well by the band throughout- and again the lead work is of uniformly excellent with emotive qualities. The albums closes strongly with “Upon The Throne of Lights”- it ends suddenly and after some strong vocal hooks and fine musicianship.

If you are looking for an album with epic doom qualities, in direct lineage with the greats of doom and trad (Candlemass, Sabbath, Maiden et al), then look no further. This is an excellent and all encompassing album, waiting and ready to take you on a fantastical journey. Finally, catch the band live when you can- they slay!

“Into The Realms” Review:

Following on then, from last years fantasy concept record “Valley of The King”, comes this tempting taster for their forthcoming full length. The forthcoming record, I hasten to add, is to do with all things Greek and mythological- such a rich vein of inspiration to tap into for the band.

Musically, this single is of the epic doom variety- think Candlemass and you have the mainspring from whence this band originate, I reckon. The A-side here, “Into The Realms of Poseidon” starts with elegant piano and obligatory sound of waves before the track comes in... quietly. A finely sung vocal and clean guitar compliment a solid rhythm section which shifts feel accordingly with the heaviness which follows. It's wistful story telling with powerful riffs and a keen sense of dynamics. The approach demonstrates the new line up working cohesively and impressively on a song which is epic in scope and concept. Excellent stuff.

The second track “Tales of Glaucus” is a more straightforward proposition- it demonstrates fine riffing which takes in trad and doom influences- nice to be able to hear all instruments in the mix, too. There are changes aplenty through the song- it is not a one dimensional plod fest- and the band handle these with aplomb.

As a stand alone single this is an excellent example of what the band are all about. As a taster for the next album, it whets the appetite to insatiable levels for epic doom from a unique band. Roll on album number two!

Albinö Rhino - "Uphold The Light: Part II" (Review)

By: Victor Van Ommen

Album Type: Single
Date Released: 09/02/2016
Label: Independent

“Uphold The Light: Part II” DD track listing:

1). Uphold The Light: Part II (20:47)

The Review:

Helsinki trio Albinö Rhino plays a fluid form of heavy psych exploration on their new single “Uphold the Light Part II.” Part I was the 14 minute closer of their 2014 self-titled sophomore outing and rumor has it that Part III will make the scene later this year as the B-Side to Part II.

Albinö Rhino’s sound is wide and colorful like the vast expanse of the ocean on a hot summer day yet strangely fitting for late night smoke outs in the dead of winter. Part II takes off from Part I, and calms the mood down a little by carving out a niche somewhere between the monotony of Death Hawks and the grittiness of Colour Haze. A driving bass line and repetitive drumming is what pulls this song through its twenty minutes, allowing the guitars to lightly jump and skip around this rhythmic foundation. For those looking for a jam to get lost in, be sure to check this mind-bender out.

Their Bandcamp page hosts part I, Part II is out now, and we’ll just have to wait patiently for Part III.

Slabdragger - "Evacuate" (Review)

Words by: Chris Bull

The Review:

I've been granted the absolute privilege of reviewing the first track released by Slabdragger from their forthcoming album 'Rise Of The Dawncrusher' and what a Slab it is!

'Evacuate' is the kind of glorious stoner tinged groovy doom sludge metal we've come to expect from Slabdragger but unlike anything they've released before. If you've yet to hear it, it's got more in common with 'Erroneous Maximus' than any other track from previous album 'Regress' but more of a Hellbastard vibe during the opening few bars.

The vocals from both guitarist Sam Thredder (who also recorded the album) and bassist Yusuf Tary are on top form, trading verses and combining on other sections to brilliant effect, just as they always do! Some excellent groove laden licks make you instantly smile and nod along before it goes all sludgy and doomy in a way that only Slabdragger can...then there's more groove as both vocalists scream over the top and it goes all 'Bab El Mandeb' on us. Today Is The Day's Steve Austin mastered 'Rise...' and his strokes of genius allow the high end to shine through without taking away any of the bass and rounding it all out to allow the devastating effects to burrow furiously into your brain.

Fans of Slabdragger will love this, hell, fans of heavy music in general should love it, it's absolutely brilliant and if this is a precursor to what lies ahead on 'Rise Of The Dawncrusher' we're all in for a wonderful treat.

“Rise Of The Dawncrusher” is available for preorder here and will be officially released on the 26 February 2016

Kapil Seshasayee - "Brazen" (Single Review)

By: James Harris

Album Type: Single
Date Released: 27/10/2015
Label: Fu Inle Records

The Review

Glasgow genre-defier Kapil Seshasayee dropped the single “Brazen” on October 27th on Fu Inle Records, an intense shard of proggy post-rock in the form of a promo video that follows August's EP “Crimes.”

The music on this track meshes well with the video: well-produced, low-key, melodic, but dark and intense as well - a lot of clean lines in both video and song. Like an ambient take on math rock or a noise band come clean, Kapil's guitar flows effortlessly between thick textural pulses, noisy effects, and more diverse moves such as sweeps and tapping and the like, it’s  mellow but driving.

Influences seem to range from Mogwai to Big Black, Between the Buried and Me to Polvo. The use of the waterphone was a cool touch that added a great deal to the aura of the piece. The instrument is often used in film scores, like a bunch of 60s horror movies, Poltergeist, Let the Right One In and many others. The video is a sort of multi-angle performance video, dark and spare like the song itself. It is pretty straightforward, but with some interesting cuts and angles, reflecting the way the tune has a groove that is easy to nod along to while being technical and interesting enough to keep you off guard as to what comes next - building a tension that is never quite released. Many great clear shots of the guitar work, and the vocals are clear, strong, and melodic. It is a complex tune that should further add to his reputation in anticipation of an end of the year UK tour and forthcoming debut full-length.

Review:

I tend to stay away from reviewing singles as I like to focus on EP's and Albums. But am going to make an exception for Red Mountains new single – Sun. Red Mountains are a Psychedelic Stoner Metal Band from Norway who are going to release their debut album in Sept 2015. Such a long fucking wait as their new song – Sun – is incredible. I've been listening to this song for the last 24 hours or so and it's possibly one of the finest Stoner Metal songs I've heard this year.

It's an intriguing mix of Desert Rock, Fuzz Rock, Psychedelic Rock and Stoner Metal that gives Red Mountains a heavy and original sound all of their own. The vocals bring an air of confidence and grizzled authority to a band that feels they have seen it all. Though it's the music that's the winning factor here as Red Mountains prove they're going to be one of the most talked about bands to look out for in 2015. Sun is loud, heavy, distorted and even uplifting as Red Mountains will put you in an hypnotic trance.

It's been a very long time that a single has left me feeling very excited to hear a bands debut album. Red Mountains you definitely have my attention and I think a huge number of other people in the months to come as this song is a stone-cold classic in the making. WOW.

Wild Throne - 'War Is A Romance (Single Review)

Review:

Just over a year has passed since I was left gushing over Washington trio Wild Throne’s stunning and bombastic ‘Blood Maker EP’ here at The Sludgelord. This website is, quite rightly, inundated with some gloriously good music, crossing a multitude of styles and showing just how rude and healthly the scene is currently in. It’s inspiring to see. There are literally thousands of bands vying for our attention week in, week out, so it has to take something special to catch our imagination – and more importantly here, mine specifically. But Wild Throne’s ‘Blood Maker EP’ did exactly that. Now the troupe have returned, fresh from penning a deal with Roadrunner Records – a mean and well deserved fete in itself – with a blistering new single, ‘War Is Romance.’

Across the tracks frenetic, as-chaotic-as-a-bouncy-ball-launched-into-a-tiny-rubber-lined-room length, you pass through so many dimensions, musical references, gorgeous, spine-tingling nuances and insatiable fury. It stops you dead in your tracks. From the Motörhead styled, foot-to-the-accelerator openings, to Mastodon like pummelling’s later on down the line, betwixt solos that twist and scream like one of Jack the Ripper’s vulnerable and squeamish victims, it’s a song that has more than affirmed my already well established love for this band.

Previously known as Dog Shredder, the new song, the first monster to rear its ugly head from their forthcoming album ‘Heart of Darkness,’ gives you a snapshot of what this band is. It’s all over the place – flirting with the sounds of the aforementioned artists alongside the likes of Converge, Mars Volta, Muse and the Dillinger Escape Plan – yet at the same time, it couldn’t be more fluent. It picks you up and shuttles you through an intimidating sonic space time continuum that, quite literally, takes your breath away.

At times, frontman Josh Holland’s vocal replicate that of Matt Bellamy’s schizophrenic and maniacal octave jumps – only if Matt had had an ounce of cocaine burst in his stomach, causing him to thrash about the place in a full-blooded adrenaline craze.

“Humans tend to seek out both love and war instinctively,” Holland has stated on the topic of War Is Romance’s lyrical theme. “Rather than thinking of them as opposites, I wanted to suggest that the intensities of violence and passion actually share more similarities than differences. That the hunger to fight is some sort of inner romance. We lust for it.”

‘Harvest of Darkness’ is released August 18th via Roadrunner Records. If this lead track is anything to go by, it promises to be a record to kick a boot up the arse of their already dizzying ascent.

Lost Orb - Low Ebb's Lament (Single Review)

Low Ebb's Lament cover art

Album Type: Single
Date Released: 08th December 2014
Label: Self Released

Low Ebb's Lament – Track Listing

1.Low Ebb's Lament 17:22

Members

Chris West: Guitar, Bass
Chantal Brown: Vocals
Tony Reed: Drums

Review:

Lost Orb is a new musical project featuring Chris West (Trippy Wicked), Chantal Brown and one of my current fave musical heroes – Tony Reed of Mos Generator and Stone Axe fame, have came together to form an altogether different kind of band. Lost Orb is a Drone/Ambient/Sludge/Doom/Stoner/Trippy Band that has epic riffs with beautiful vocals to match courtesy of Chantal.

Low Ebb's Lament is one of the best singles I have heard this year. It's 17 minutes of droned out majestic experimental bliss. Parts Sleep, Sabbath, Led Zepplin and OM as Lost Orb take you into some far out trippy realms. The last time Chris and Tony teamed up this year was for the insane Dr. Crazy. Lost Orb is entirely different. It's a more surreal, blissful and even uplifting doom-laden experience that will last long in the memory.

It's firmly rooted in 70s Heavy Rock where imagination is key as Lost Orb have unleashed something special here. Do yourself a favour and download this incredible song now. It's available on BandCamp Buy Now Download. Chris has told me that Lost Orb are working on a full release next year. On this evidence Lost Orb are going to be one of the best bands to check out in 2015.

Awesome. Plain and Simple.

YANOMAMO - Ativan and Whiskey (Single Review)

Ativan and Whiskey cover art

Label: Von Grimm Records

Ativan and Whiskey – Track Listing

1 – Ativan and Whiskey

Members

Anthony Von Grimm - Violence
Jason Higson - 6 String riffage
Paul Attard - 4 string riffage
Dav Byrne - Sick beats

Review:

Yanomamo is a band from Australia who deal in punishing slow-paced Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metal riffs with Violent and brutal vocals to match. They have released a few releases over the past 2 years or so which has gained them a loyal following within the Sludge/Doom/Stoner Metal community.

They must be good as they recently supported Doom Metal Heavyweights – CONAN – on their recent Australian Tour. So it's good for CONAN then that's more enough evidence I need to check out Yanomamo's blistering new single – Ativan And Whiskey. A 6 minute epic full of heavy violent Sludge/Stoner Metal riffs that will kick the utter shit out of you from the very first second.

Yanomamo add violent hazes of psychedelic vibes to give their sound a more down and grimy earthly feel. Wait till the 2:35 minute mark where this awesome riff comes out of nowhere. I didn't expect that at all. The band is influenced by the legendary NOLA scene and it pays dividends as the band stay brutal through out.

If this is the sign of things to come for their debut album then I can't wait to hear it. Yanomamo are on the verge of something special here. Check these violent sludge/stoner metal bruisers now. You won't be sorry.

Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats - Runaway Girls (Single Review)

Album Type: Single
Date Released: August 25th 2014
Label: Rise Above Records

Runaway Girls - track listing:

1. Runaway Girls
2. Devil’s Work (Acoustic)

Band Members

Kevin Starrs – Lead Vocals, Lead Guitars, Organ
Yotam Rubinger – Guitars, Backing Vocals
Dean Millar – Bass
Itamar Rubinger – Drums

Review:

According to the official Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats Facebook page, the impending release of the “Runaway Girls” single signals the “closing chapter of the MIND CONTROL era”. And what an era it has been. Last year’s Mind Control topped the “best of” lists for websites and metalheads worldwide, leading to an opening slot for Black Sabbath, whose comeback record, “13” pales in comparison to Uncle Acid’s landmark third full-length. Runaway Girls is an appropriate coda to the psychedelic doom masterpiece – the title track likely would not have fit into the overall concept of the album, in which an apocalyptic cult manages to succeed where so many had failed. Frankly, it’s just too much fun, but manages to pack all the sexy, sinister vibes of the album into a tight three and a half minutes.

Starrs’ guitar hooks are off the charts here, nicely doubled by Yotam Rubinger and Dean Millar. Itamar Rubinger’s jazzy, 6/8 swing shows that metal drumming can still be heavy without 808s and blast beats – Bill Ward would be proud. The lyrics come off like a lost chapter of the Mind Control story; Starrs’ narrator beckons to the titular ladies, offering the family life they’ve craved. Of course, the family here is of the evil, devil-worshipping, suede fringe and LSD spiked moonshine variety, as the downbeat, menacing solo indicates, leading toward a thrashing crescendo.

The B-side, an acoustic rendition of album-closer “Devil’s Work,” abandons the pounding, military backbone of the original, electric version. Instead, layered acoustic guitars glide back and forth between airy, minor key folk and bluesy riffing. The multitracked vocals here don’t indicate the same army of brainwashed acolytes of the album track, but perhaps a lone madman, voices echoing in his skull, stalking and dispatching the un-converted in some desolate scene straight from a 70s exploitation movie. The track wouldn’t be out of place in the opening credits of the original The Hills Have Eyes or the lesser known Just Before Dawn.

Overall, the single will appeal to anyone who was enamored with Mind Control, and comes as a bittersweet farewell to this era of the band. Then again, if an effort this strong is truly clearing the vaults for Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats, I, for one, can’t wait to hear what they have in store next.

Review:

So two of the genres finest Instrumental Stoner Rock Bands have joined forces once more to deliver a pulsating 7inch Single Release which showcases both bands at their very best.

Karma To Burn's track – 53 – is more of the same from possibly the finest Instrumental Stoner Rock band on the planet. Karma To Burn are masters of writing tracks like this. Intense Desert Rock and Stoner Metal riffs combining for one a fast-paced ride that will soon get you into the mood of rocking out. This track shows you why the band are considered innovators of the Instrumental Stoner Rock scene. Not many bands can match their ingenuity and vision in such a short space of time. This track is classic Karma To Burn through and through. Why mess with perfection.

Sons of Alpha Centauri – provide the world with another stunning track that shows you why they are considered one of the UK's finest Instrumental Stoner Rock bands. They play the same sort of music as Karma To Burn but with a more darker and progressive edge. The band add a sinister space rock vibe around the 3rd minute or so which feels like a trippy distress signal from the far reaches of the universe. I will have to say that this track is possibly the best track on this release. Even though Karma To Burn are one of my fave ever Stoner Rock bands. Sons Of Alpha Centauri unleash some epic spacey riffs that will have you begging for more. I hope the band will release their eagerly awaited 2nd album as they are seriously a brilliant and elusive band you all need to check out now.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

TONGUE - No Handles To Hold - Single Review

No Handles To Hold - single cover art

Album TypeSingle
Date Released: April 8th 2014
Label: Self Released

No Handles To Hold - track listing:

1.No Handles To Hold – 04:03

Bio:

Tongue is a power trio rock band from Belgrade, Serbia. The band started as a Bizic Vladimir (Ripkid) solo project in 2010 after the demise of his long-running hardcorepunk band Lets Grow where he used to play the lead guitar. Tongue roots date back to 2003 with the band called Wishingwell that Bizic Vladimir was a part of (vocals) together with his late brother Pavkovic Srdjan (1978 - 2005) on guitar, Stevan Cirovic (Jaibo!, Lets Grow, While) on drums, Sinisa Videkanic on bass (Ex-Lets Grow) and Nemanja Gvozdenovic on lead guitar. Wishingwell didn't make any record or live appearance due to a death of Pavkovic Srdjan in 2005. Tongue has major influences from the genres of hardcorepunk, stoner rock, hardrock, classic rock and metal music but is open for experimenting.

The Band Members

Vladimir "Ripkid" Bizic - guitars, vocals, drum programming, music & lyrics

Ana Djurovic (Cannot) - guitars, backing vocals

Review:

Tongue is a band who I have been a fan of for quite some time now. I have featured every record they have released so far as shown from the links below.

Plus I have interviewed the main man Biza in 2012 as well. Though I may have to change that and interview him again.

Anyway Tongue are back with their with latest single – No Handles To Hold – a hard rocking Stoner Rock track that sees Biza playing riffs that QOTSA used to play back in their earlier days. It's a fucking brilliant Stoner Rock track packed full of sublime riffs and spiky vocals & lyrics to match.

Biza once again did all of the work on this EP. Instrumentals , Programming and vocals. So he is a one-man Stoner Rock Maestro. If you're already a fan of Tongue then you're going to love this like I did. If you haven't heard Tongue before then No Handles To Hold is the perfect introduction as you're in for one wild ride. OK it only lasts for 4 minutes but it's got some excellent Stoner Rock riffs for you to rock out to.

Plus you can check the 3 other EP's that Biza has available for FreeDownload as well. I wish some cool independent record label would take a chance on Biza and give him a record deal. He has proven what a fantastic musician and songwriter he really is. I would just love to see him unleashed on a full length studio recording. But until then Biza remains one of the true underground Stoner Rock heroes.

Download this song from BandCamp now. You won't be sorry.

Brilliant. End Of.

1.Disciple (English) 05:32
2.Obsédé (Francais) 05:32
3.Justiceiro (Portuguese) 05:32

Bio:

Influenced by such bands as Black Sabbath, Down, Kyuss, and other original rock/metal bands from the 1980’s & 1990’s, BUFFALO THEORY MTL plays its own genre of music that might be described as stoner metal.

Band Members

Anton Parr – vocals
Yannick Pilon – guitar & vocals
Pat Gordon – guitar
Gary Lyons – bass
Brian Craig - drums

Review:

Oh Hell Yeah!!! - Buffalo Theory MTL – are back with their brilliant new single – Murder Trilogy which the band describes as - “MURDER TRILOGY is a trilingual single which consists of three versions of the same song, each with its own twist to the story. One in English, one in French and one in Portuguese.“

WOW. What a great and unique twist for a hard-rocking Sludge/Stoner Metal track. Obviously I understand the English Version. Not so much with the French or Portuguese versions. But damn the song still sounds awesome whatever language it is sung in. But we all understand the universal language of the RIFF!!!!

Buffalo Theory MTL have delivered another excellent track to slay you with. It's a fast paced bundle of brutal energetic Sludge/Stoner Metal riffs. It's a wicked combination of the Californian Stoner Metal sound mixed with the more legendary violent NOLA Swamp Metal sounds that we all know and love.

Look just headover to BandCamp and download this now as it's a fucking blast from start to finish. It's available on Buy Now Download. Trust me – your going to love this. Awesome stuff!!!

Brilliant and Highly Recommended.
