The Review:
Mastodon, Baroness and Kylesa are heavyweights in the higher echelons of metal, therefore, stating that your sound is influenced by those bands, could be blessing and a curse. Seemingly people who like those bands may well check you out; however given the stature of such bands, you can be setting yourself up for an almighty fall.
Colossus of Destiny is an interesting proposition, because the influences of those bands can be heard on ‘Eden ’, however at the same time, there is a trace of classic rock too. ‘Uncover The Cosmic Clue’ takes inspiration from Mastodon and at times the guitar work is intricate, it also has that old school Mastodon crunch to the riffs. Julien's vocal are filled with passion and conviction, with his lead breaks sounding fresh and inventive. ‘Eden ’ starts off with an absolute blinder of a riff; the alternate picking is super tight and also has a heavy sludge crunch to it. This is by far the best track on the record and incorporates a lot of the influences from the bands mention above, but it is a strong and exciting track.
The reference to classic rock is what I felt toward track 3, ‘As The Universe Runs Black’, I felt that the riffs throughout sounded kinda old school, with a Van Halen type vibe to it, which is not to say that it is a bad thing, but mainly highlights the depth to their sound. Again the song is tight and aggressive, with the hardcore screamed vocals being at the forefront. The muscianship is impressive and they come across as schooled veterans. At around the 6:00 mark it kinda outstays it welcome a little and that could be said for all of the four tracks on the album, however what is on offer is a mutitude of good quality riffs from a sludge based metal band and judging by this there is better things to come from them in the future.
