Seven Inches of A Fucking Elephant

It’s impressive to hear musicians aspire to do something as new and unique as this. This music is of the elite, the intelligent listener, very thought provoking and exceptional.

The Review

A Fucking Elephant is an instrumental progressive metal duo from Pennington, New Jersey. I can’t help but think of King Crimson’sLark’s Tongue in Aspic” when I listen.   Although only two members, guitar and drums, their sound is massive. There might as well be a bassist doubling the riffs, the way the guitars are produced.  Thick and raw!  The drummer is obviously accomplished and schooled in the art of invention. There are some really interesting time signature moves, nothing predictable without losing an ounce of energy. Their music’s gauged at maximum high energy all the time, dynamically peaking and everything moves forward, keeping the listener intrigued.

Track one, entitled- “I’m addicted to drugs and sex and I want you to choke me”, well, are lyrics needed with a title like that? The central rhythm of the first half is in 5/4 with a whole lot of twists and rhythmic turns. It’s kind of like Rush without the vocals and the standard rock song structure. I wonder how they write this kind of music, if the guitarist composes it all at once, do they compose all these parts together? It’s pretty complex to the point of being math rock, but they do have feel. It’s not all cerebral.

Track two- “A bunch of good looking round eyes” is metal. Extreme progressive metal. Everything is perfected. This isn’t jam out get-wasted music, but focused the way a classical piece is constructed and performed. Must be very impressive to see live. It’s impressive to hear musicians aspire to do something as new and unique as this. This music is of the elite, the intelligent listener, very thought provoking and exceptional. I can only wonder what a full length would sound like by this band and how much work it would take to make a lot of this kind of music.
