Interview with Jizzlobber

Jizzlobber cover art

Today on Sludgelord I am interviewing the excellent French Sludge/Stoner Metal Band - Jizzlobber

Jizzlobber recently impressed ourselves at Sludgelord with their Faith No More inspired Sludge/Stoner/Space Rock riffs.

Their début EP is a total blast of insane riffage from start to finish. So much so I had to interview these guys.

Well they have kindly agreed to do an interview with myself. So lets get down to business with JIZZLOBBER.

Q1 – Hi Guys, Thanks for doing this. How are things with you Today.

Guillaume : Hi, thanx to you for your interest in Jizzlobber, things are pretty calm at the moment, still working on new songs to complete the setlist.

Romain : But we are also quite busy with our daily jobs, and don't have much time for rehearsals …

Q2 – For people not in the know can you give them a brief history of the band and how it came about.

Guillaume : Laurent (drums), Romain (bass, vocal) and myself (Guillaume, guitar) had a band called Hollow corp. that splitted a few years ago, and as we wanted to go on making music together we hired Patrice (guitar, lead vocal), who came from a band called Nedgeva, we gave it a try, and, as it seems, it worked out pretty well.

Q3 – How would you describe your sound.

Romain : Thick, fat, corrosive ?

Guillaume : It is somewhere between sludge metal, space rock, stoner and post-hardcore, but these are only narrowing labels.

Q4 – I know I said in my review that Faith No More inspired you guys a great deal. Are there any other bands influenced you a collective unit.

Guillaume & Romain: We have each very different influences, but I could say the most important would be Old Man Gloom / Zozobra, Torche, Farflung, Breach, Kruger, Mastodon, Pantera ...

Q5 – Are you all full time musicians or do you have regular jobs to pay the bills.

Guillaume : We all have jobs, otherwise we would all probably just starve.

Q6 – Are your family and friends supportive of your music.

Guillaume : Yes, they are, and we are thankful for that, lucky we !

Q7 – What is the song-writing process in the band. Is it a group collective or is just down to one individual.

Guillaume : It depends, sometimes one of us comes up with something, a riff or two, and we try to develop from there, or we simply gather in the rehearsal room and work from scratch.

Q8 – Is there a scene for Sludge/Doom/Stoner bands to perform in your home town on a regular basis. Or do you have to travel further afield to perform on a regular basis.

Guillaume : As we don't perform on a regular basis yet, it kinda hard to answer, there are nice venues in Alsace, but it's not that easy for the Sludge scene to break thru, that's why we created the SuperStrong label, along with Crown and Six In Line, to federate our resources, organizing concerts, brew beer (no joke !) etc …

Q9 – Have you toured with anyone famous. If so who have been your fave band to perform for/with.

Guillaume : No tour yet.

Q10 – What are your favourite bands around at the moment. Do you listen to modern day rock/metal or do you just listen to the classic era of Stoner/Sludge/Doom Metal.

Guillaume : my favorite bands at the moment are Swans "The Seer", Fink "Perfect Darkness", Fever Ray and Love sex Machine.

Romain : these days ? ... the last Maserati, and other cosmic/space stuff like Zombi, Majeure, etc. And some afrobeat !

Q11 – What are your views of blogs such as Sludgelord featuring and reviewing your records, as opposed to mainstream music magazines? Has your music reached the mainstream mags, at home or around the world?

Romain : Blogs like yours are very cool and helpful, for both fans and bands. People really interested in this kind of music can easily find resources using internet. So in fact mainstream mags are not really useful in this part of the sphere we are in, as we do not plan to tour in huge venues and stadiums or sell thousands of albums.

Q12 – It seems that France has a great reputation for Sludge/Stoner Metal bands starting to appear recently – HUATA, Abrahma, Wheelfall, Los Disidentes Del Sucio Motel, Crown and Cowards amongst many others. Is it hard for a French Sludge/Stoner Metal band to perform and get recognition from French music fans.

Romain : There is a nice but small underground Sludge/Stoner scene in France, so we hope we can get a bit of recognition. But as for now we do not have seriously worked on booking and promoting ourselves for gigs yet ; thus it is hard to make any statement on this question. What appears to be sure is that the DIY is the best method for bands like us.

Q13 - What are your future plans for the upcoming 12 months or so. Anything we should be excited about.

Guillaume : We hope to tour a bit, and eventually try to bring out a full length record, if we get time to write it !

Q14 – How much has BandCamp helped to get your music across to a wider audience. It's how I found your music. Loved it from the start.

Romain : It didn't help very much for the moment, but maybe in the future. But at least it crossed the English Channel, and reached your ears, that's already a good point !!!

Q15 – What are your views of blogs and websites giving albums away for free. Some people are for it and some people against.

Guillaume : If it helps the bands to get some recognition, and develop their fan base, why not ? I mean, it is not our job, it does not pay the bills...

Romain : Yes, it allows fans to discover tons of bands. But I feel a bit uncomfortable with this idea of never giving a penny for the good stuff... So, it would be cool and nice if people go more often on bandcamp (or others) and pay a bit instead of always downloading for free.

Q16 - Finally, Do you have anything to say your fans?

Guillaume : Watch out the SuperStrong website, and discover the other bands from our label, they are worth it. And be prepared, the brand new original SuperStrong beer will be available soon !
