FOR THOSE ABOOT TO ROCK: Riffs of Canada with Tunguska Mammoth (Montreal, Québec)

By: Mark Tremblay

Album Type: Full Length
Date Released: 11/05/2018
Label: Deathbound Records

If you dig riff-centric music interspersed with triumphant vocal harmonies, this record is for you.

“Breathless” CD//DD track listing:

1. Breathless
2. Kings And Queens
3. Phénix
4. The Yellow Sign
5. New Sun
6. Le Vent
7. Lily (feat. Jared Collins)
8. We are the Night

The Review:

Tunguska Mammoth return with their new full length “Breathless”. The album is a riff-heavy nod to bands such as Beastwars and Mastodon. If you dig riff-centric metal music interspersed with triumphant vocal harmonies, this record is for you.

The album opens with a trio of bangers in “Breathless”, “Kings and Queens” and “Phénix”. All the songs are riff-focused, but not over the top to the point of self-indulgent.  The amount of restraint witnessed showcases the band’s collective ability of performing as a unit, and serving what is best for the song.  It is nice to see the band’s French Canadian roots showcased on the record.  Songs like “Le Vent” that are sung in both French and add subtle nuance that few Canadian bands are able to utilize.

The album’s apex comes on “New Sun”. The song is a demolition of riffs and incorporates a melody that would feel right at home on a Torche record.  Overall, if you’re looking for a record that is tasteful and well-balanced, Tunguska Mammoth’s new record “Breathless” is ground zero.

FOR THOSE ABOOT TO ROCK: Riffs of Canada with Big|Brave (Montreal, Québec)

By: Mark Tremblay

Album Type: Full Length
Date Released: 15/09/2017
Label: Southern Lord Records

This three song magnum opus is a sonic journey through the unexpected nuances in heavy music.  “Ardour” is Big|Brave fully realized and fully formed. In a genre full of chaotic noise, the refreshing wave of heaviness provided by Big|Brave rises to the top.

“Ardor” CD//DD//LP track listing:

1). Sound
2). Lull
3). Borer

The Review:

Big|Brave are the hardest band to categorize and define in heavy music. Their latest offering, “Ardor”, is equal parts calming and cathartic. This three song magnum opus is a sonic journey through the unexpected nuances in heavy music. “Ardor” opens with the serene crusher “Sound”. Ironically, it is the silent pauses within the song that give the piece its weight and impact. Big|Brave have this ability to make every note count and matter, something that many bands could take note of.

Lull” is the perfect bridge between the albums opener and closer. Robin Wattie vocals are extremely raw and powerful. The tonal qualities of her voice feel Like Big|Brave at their most honest and vulnerable. The album ends with an absolute sludge banger “Borer”, the heaviest track in the Big|Brave canon. By the songs end, the listener is being drowned in these extremely heavy chords that have this calming effect.

Ardor” is Big|Brave fully realized and fully formed. In a genre full of chaotic noise, the refreshing wave of heaviness provided by Big|Brave rises to the top.

VIDEO PREMIERE: Québec’s WarCall deliver fast and melodically aggressive new track “Riding With Zombies”

Inspired by Iron Maiden, Metallica, Motorhead, Dissection and Slayer, Montreal, Québec’s WarCall play fast, aggressive, melodic, dramatic and aggressive music, no that’s not a typo, you read it correctly, double the aggression and with three well-received albums under their bullet-belts (‘Demonarchy’, ‘Blood, Guts and Dirt’, ‘III’), this power-trio are about to unleash their fourth ‘Invaders’. The album features 10 tracks and is a concept record  based on humans fighting back an alien invasion.

“Everybody who has followed WarCall since our beginnings will be extremely satisfied with ‘Invaders’.  It is our best sound, best production, best song writing and best musical performances.  The new album is a return to the style on the first two albums.  On album ‘’III’’, we wanted a raw approach so it was recorded live in the studio on analog tape for a truly rock and roll feel.  With ‘’Invaders’’, it’s a more polished production with more energy and experience.” says guitarist Mathieu Simard

Warcall’s forthcoming album “Invaders” is due out October 13, 2017 via Plan B Music and today you  can check out a new and exclusive track “Riding With Zombies” below.
