ALBUM REVIEW: Vokonis - "The Sunken Djinn"

By: David Jupp

Album Type: Full Length
Date Released: 09/06/2017
Label: Ripple Music

Whilst being undoubtedly heavy what makes this sophomore effort stand out is the variation employed in the bludgeon. By embracing less traditional doom landscapes ‘The Sunken Djinn’ has allowed Vokonis room to demonstrate the full raft of their audio-weaponry, and in doing so propelled them to the forefront of the heavy underground.

“The Sunken Djinn” CD//DD//LP track listing:

1). The Sunken Djinn
2). Calling From The Core
3). The Coldest Night
4). Blood Vortex
5). Architect Of Despair
6). Rapturous
7). Maelstroem

The Review:

Ripple Music is a label in the midst of a purple patch. With both Steak and Mothership releasing standout records in recent months, so it begs the question, can Vokonis make it three in a row? As some biblical dude definitely once said: ‘asketh of the sludge gods and you shall receive.’ Well ask I did, and the reply that poured forth was 40 minutes of crafted, brutal and more importantly, interesting sludge-metal.

It has only been one solitary year since Swedish trio Vokonis dropped their debut long-player ‘Olde One Ascending.’ Hewn from the same doomy bedrock as genre titans Sleep, and with Iommi’s influence looming large, the record is about as strong a rebrand as is possible. Having previously released a well-received EP ‘Temple’ under the moniker Creedsmen Arise, the band became embroiled in a legal dispute over the name. Well what better way to stick it to the lesser ‘Creedsmen’ than with six psych-tinged bangers?

Album two ‘The Sunken Djinn’ ignites with its title track. Wasting no time, Vokonis drop the hammer in minute one. A half-time beast of a riff marshals in Simon’s trademark yell and Vokonis are back, the beast has risen. At minute four however, things get a little proggy. The first act gives way to a short meditative interlude, not to fear though the doom soon returns and Simon’s excellent lead-work takes centre-stage. The song closes out in epic fashion with a rousing call: ‘carry on into the sun…’ By the end of only the first cut it becomes clear that Vokonis have refocused their sound. Moving away from Sleep’s more traditional church of doom the band have steered their ship into sludgier, more progressive waters.

Next up is ‘Calling From The Core.’ Along with five of the seven songs on the record, it comes in at over six minutes long. Vokonis make the most of every second of the extended track-length. A slow build of restrained guitars and scattered toms explode into a crushing driven chorus.  Similarly to the title track the rage is then whittled down to another contemplative build with hints of Toronto sludge-stalwarts, Pyres. Having caught its breath momentarily the song then hurtles to a close on a platform of vocal harmony and articulate lead-work.

Jonte’s outrageous bass tone initiates the trudging dirge of track three, ‘The Coldest Night.’  The song proceeds to haul itself through 5 minutes of sumptuous down-tempo sludge before delivering the heaviest moment of the record. Up until now the production has been typical of Ripple Music’s recent output, thick, warm and clear. But as the outro veers into earshot the guitar tone should just plain be illegal. The weight on show here would rival even Black Breath’s work and as Simon’s descending riffs collapse into a forceful chug, Jonte’s bass provides a sopping sub-hertz bookend.

‘Blood Vortex’ follows and serves as a quick-paced more traditional precursor to the sprawling masterpiece to come. ‘Architects of Despair’ takes in a chugging battle cry, emotive guitars leads and best of all some kind of cymbal/lead-pipe outro. Again more contemporary influences swim beneath the surface with evocations of “Red” era Baroness and early Galvano.

‘Rapturous’ employs a similar template and again Emil’s monstrous tom-work propels the song to juggernaut status. Like a dying beast wheezing its final breath after the battle, “Maelstrom”’s three minutes of white noise and distant drums are an apt curtain call to an outstanding second record

The craft that afforded Vokonis such acclaim on their debut has been refined and renewed.

The Sludgelord News: Godflesh, Crowbar, Truckfighters, Egypt and more acts confirmed to play DESERTFEST LONDON 2016!

UK's #1 stoner, doom, sludge and psych event DESERTFEST LONDON is thrilled to announce the second wave of artists who will be taking the stage at the 2016 edition, taking place in April 29th to May 1st across multiple venues in the legendary musical hub of Camden Town...

NOLA's sludge metal heroes CROWBAR will be heading back over seas to make ears bleed, bringing their influential slow-and-low sound to an eager, ready, and willing Desertfest. Kirk Windstein and his crew of titans haven’t graced UK revellers with their rowdy presence since 2014; and Crowbar has never played Desertfest London. Making for a truly exciting, and long over-due, addition to the already stellar proceedings next year has in store.

Desertfest are also pleased to reveal that our friends at Old Empire will once again be curating a stage, bringing an eclectic and exciting array of acts to broaden the pallet. First to be announced are industrial legends GODFLESH, who will be headlining the Old Empire offerings. Their experimental and aggressive sound has established the Birmingham-based duo as one of the most innovative bands in industrial music, cited as influencing everyone from Metallica to Faith No More.

As if all that wasn’t enough to process, there’s of course a healthy helping of doom and stoner rock goodness joining the mix for Desertfest 2016. Heavy-hitting warriors TRUCKFIGHTERS will be chucking riffs left, right and centre, alongside fellow Swedish fuzz lords MONOLORD, who will be riding easy and destroying all in one slow, hard and loud blow. Psychedelic monsters WO FAT are a welcome return, having well and truly mastered the art of trippy doom – many can do it, but few do it as well as the Dallas desert trio. EGYPT will also be heading over and hitting the bill hard to bring some Dakota doom goodness to the haze, alongside eccentric instrumental gurus ROTOR. Southern rock lovin’ PLANET OF ZEUS are bringing their raw grooves out of the Greek underground and into thirsty a London, and finally heavy rockers MOTHERSHIP will be taking fans well out the galaxy – musically speaking, of course.

Bio

Supersonic intergalactic heavy rock trio Mothership based out of Dallas, Texas give a real sense of hope that all is well in the universe, and that pure honest rock and roll has once again returned to this planet on a mission to unite true believers. Consisting of brothers Kyle Juett on bass/lead vocals, Kelley Juett on guitar/vocals, and Judge Smith on drums, these guys have created a unique sound that satisfies like a steaming hot stew of UFO and Iron Maiden, blended with the southern swagger of Molly Hatchet and ZZ Top, paired with a deadly chalice of Black Sabbath. Mothership’s goal from the beginning has been to carry on the tradition of the classic rock style of the ’70′s, updated and amped up for the modern day. The band has been non-stop road warriors since the release of their debut album in February 2013 on Ripple Music successfully invading the United States, Canada, United Kingdom and Europe playing either on festival stages, night clubs, or outdoors under the sun at motorcycle parties.

Review:

18 months later - Mothership - are primed to return to Earth and release their second album - II. This hard-rocking trio's debut album was critically acclaimed by fans and critics alike that made them a favourite with the Hard Rock/Stoner Rock crew with. I rated it highly when I reviewed back in Feb 2013. So what can we expect with II.

Well lets see if the magical ingredients are in place with what made their debut such a great release.
  • Signed to Ripple Music - Check
  • Kent Stump (Wo Fat) engineering the album - Check
  • Mothership ready to unleash some holy heck - Check
Yeah that's all the checks done. Lets get started with this review II. Let's say that Mothership are louder and heavier than before as II is ready to blast your hearing into space and beyond. II is a different album altogether from their celebrated debut album. II sees Mothership venture into the more seedier, dirtier and heavier side of Rock/Metal music. Sure, they still have the old cosmic space rock riffs showing up from time to time.

Though as a whole, II is a major step forward for Mothership as a band. They have successfully managed to create a new sound for themselves while still keeping their existing fanbase happy. Opening track - Celestial Prophet - is an instrumental spacey ambient based track with soothing riffs being played at a slow pace before heavy thunderous riffs start to appear in the middle of the song. Consider this song the "Calm Before The Storm" as Mothership are about to take you on a wild ride of rock and roll as for the next 50 mins or so, your entire being belongs to Mothership. Kyle, Kelly and Judge are ready to entertain you.

Second track - Priestess Of The Moon - sees Mothership further enrich themselves with 70s classic hard rock territory as they weave a magical dark tale that echoes memories of legendary bands past and present. The album becomes slightly trippy and hypnotic as Kelley plays some stunning guitar solos with spacey ambient noises ending the song off before Mothership once again unleash rock & roll havoc with Shanghai Surprise. This is where the seedier Mothership start coming to play with some funny as heck lyrics that ZZ-Top were masters at back in the day. What inspired Mothership to write this song? I have no idea. You will know when you hear it, as I don't want to spoil the funny as hell surprise and hidden meaning of the song. Trust me though as you will be signing this song as loud as you possibly can. II, like it's predecessor, this album has a huge likeability factor and that is down to the brilliant chemistry of all 3 members playing an equal role in bringing Mothership to life.

II has it's equal share of dark and funny moments that make this album such an exciting blast of pure rock and roll to listen to. Songs such as Holy Massacre, Centauromachy see Mothership venture into almost Doom Metal territory, which they pull off with great conviction. Maybe it's best for you not to care what genres that Mothership play on the album. Just enjoy the ride as this album is packed full of great moments for every hard rock fan to love and enjoy. II is one big party-fest of hard-rocking riffs, grizzled vocals and killer lyrics that sounds awesome thanks to Kent's stellar work on engineering duties. Hot Smoke & Heavy Blues is one of the album standout tracks as Mothership unleash a torrent of blazing riffs and vocals to thrill you with.

Another standout track has to be - Tamu Massif. A 6 minute plus psychedelic instrumental track as Mothership play an extended jam-based cosmic riff where things get very loud indeed. It has a slight laid-back approach compared to other tunes but when Mothership vent their fury, you had better stand back as they play some powerful riffs to entertain you with. II is a brilliant album. I was expecting something good from Mothership but not an album as good as this. This is gonna further enhance Mothership's reputation as one of the best hard rock bands currently out there and one to keep an eye on in 2015. II is an album as this album has it all. A stunning album that may end up on a few best of album lists. That's how seriously that great it is. Whatever you do, buy this when it comes out.

Words by Steve Howe

Thanks to Cat Jones at Southern Cross PR for sending us a promo. II will be available to buy on CD/DD/Vinyl from Ripple Music on 10th Nov 2014 (UK) and 11th Nov 2014 (USA).
