Review:

From Périgueux, France, comes the self-described Stoner Band Soundcrawler, with their album "The Dead-End Host".  It’s a little fuzzed, a little stoner-metal, but perhaps not of the ilk like you'd expect, it has sprinkling of grunge and prog in the mix too. Yes, it has heavy groove riffs, guitar solos through an effects pedal or two. Yup’ it’s all there, present and correct, but that’s not all, Soundcrawler give you all that, set against a nice haunting mood as well. There is some definite artistry here, it turns out, these guys aren’t quite the same stoner metal band you were expecting.  The songs range from driving, desperate riffing rockers to hauntingly sweet pieces such as "Long Coma Slow"

There is some real effort here to set a very dark sound, but with just the right amount of the groove riffs to stay within the stoner rock/metal category.  Truthfully, as I listen to this, I can hear elements of American early 90's grunge too, with the type of harmonies you'd hear in Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell songs.

What Soundcrawler do, is what any good band in any genre should do, refrain from writing the same song 7 to 10 times on your album. Show me some variation, and Soundcrawler do that in spades. Eclectic is good. Switch up the guitar and bass tones. Give me a little fuzz bass along with the heavy distortion on the guitars. Song 6, "The Plastic Truth" does just that, yet keeps the "haunting" quality in every song.

I liked this, and if you are into doom, fuzz, or stoner metal / rock then this is totally worth checking out.  I won't say this is the best album I’ve heard this year in similar genres, but this album is pretty damn strong.

The Sludgelord News: Soundcrawler Release New Video For “Raiders” Announce New Album Details

French stoner rockers Soundcrawler will release their debut full-length album “The Dead-End Host”on February 20^th via Klonosphere Records.

Recorded and mixed at l'Abbaye de Chancelade by Souncrawler, mastered by Acle Kahney at 4D Sound Studio, “The Dead-End Host” follows-up their “The Sandcrawler” EP self-released in 2012 and is a powerful collection of infectious riffs, groovy rhythms and dark, bluesy melodies.  

The band has recently released a music video for “Raiders”, one of the nine tracks that make up “The Dead-End Host”. Watch the awesome video directed by Grégoire Cauchois HERE.

Soundcrawler initially formed in 2011 as a two-piece project by vocalist Rémi Pocquet and guitarist Clément Revieriego. Influenced by the likes of Kyuss, Mastodon and Karma To Burn, the duo soon started working on their first studio effort, “The Sandcrawler” EP, which was released one year later, in July 2012.

In 2013, Soundcrawler expanded into a quintet with the addition of Robin Cauchois on drums, Firouze Pirolley on bass and Paul Parsat on guitar and were able to test their riff-centric heavy-rock before a live audience for the first time.

2015 will finally see the release of their first full-length album “The Dead-End Host”, a powerful collection of nine new songs filled with infectious riffs, groovy rhythms and dark, bluesy melodies that is set for release on February 20^th via Klonosphere Records/Season of Mist.

Review:

The French Stoner Rock/Metal scene never ceases to amaze me as it always throws up a great band for me to check out. During my time on Sludgelord I have discovered great bands such as Los Disidentes Del Sucio Motel, Wheelfall and Mars Red Sky amongst others.

Now Soundcrawler can be added to that list. Some of you may have already heard of these Spaced Out Stoner Rockers when I originally featured them back in August 2012. If you haven't heard of them before then you will before the year is out. As they are finally ready to unleash their excellent début album – The Dead-End Host.

A 41 minute blast of Stoner Metal riffs that matches the early Fuzz Rock sound of Truckfighters and the grunge theatrics of Seattle Legends – Soundgarden. Lead Vocalist Rémy has a distinct Chris Cornell vibe to his vocals. Opening track – Raiders – serves as the perfect introduction to the album as it lays down the groundwork for the rest of the album to follow. Elements of Fuzz Rock, Desert Rock, Space Rock, Grunge and Stoner Metal riffs combine for one irresistible combination of hard-rock heaven.

Soundcrawler unleash loud atmospheric slabs of noise throughout the album especially on the 7 minute epic – Long Coma Slow – that shows you how powerful the band actually is. The FUZZ is amped up all the way to 100 never mind 11. My head was pounding at one point as Soundcrawler don't hold back from unleashing LOUD VIOLENT NOISES for you to fully experience. The Dead-End Host is a very multi-layered album at times especially on Souls From The Trash. A very complex tune with real emotional depth to it.

The 2^nd half of the album is where the album truly comes into it's own as Soundcrawler grow in stature and confidence. Tracks such as The Plastic Truth, Civil and Infinite Genocide – unleash a heavy blast of grunge/stoner metal vibes that becomes highly addictive indeed. The album ends on a beautiful and sombre note with – And All The Seconds Left. It's beautifully played haunting acoustic track that left me begging for more. Maybe the guys could of ended the album with one final loud-as-hell track. 

The Dead-End Host is a stunning début album and one Soundcrawler should rightly be proud of. Now lets hope the Stoner Metal community catches on and gives these guys the recognition they truly deserve.
