FOR THOSE ABOOT TO ROCK: Riffs of Canada with Pale Mare (Toronto, Ontario)

By: Mark Tremblay

Album Type: EP
Date Released: 10/11/2017
Label: Medusa Crush Recordings

For those of you who long for the days of “Blessed Black Wings” era High on Fire, this record is the perfect trip down memory-lane.  If you dig thick and dirty riffs, you’ll dig Pale Mare.

“Pale Mare EP” CS//DD track listing:

1). Descolada
2). Carthage
3). Hoplite

The Review:

Toronto’s Pale Mare has finally released their long awaited self-titled EP. After making a name for themselves locally opening for acts such as Windhand and Weedeater, Pale Mare have unleashed their well-honed brand of sludge metal. For those of you who long for the days of “Blessed Black Wings” era High on Fire, this record is the perfect trip down memory-lane.

The EP comes out of the gate swinging with “Descolada”; a song built upon a heavy riff that would make Matt Pike smile. Where Pale Mare break from the pack, however, is this jazz break they’ve fused into the middle of the song. The clean shimmering guitar chords and wah-tinged bass give them a nuisance and balance not often found in riff-driven music.

“Carthage” is a straight out banger that page homage to early Baroness EP’s “First” and “Second” while adding their own twists. Luke Roberts’ drum fills on this track are particularly jaw-dropping. Given the fact that he is also the guitarist and main creative force behind Ayahuasca, it begs the question “Is there anything Luke Roberts can’t do?”.

The albums closer “Hoplite” is continuation of all these elements mashed together in one riff-crammed magnum opus. Pale Mare is a throwback to the hey-day of the Savannah sludge metal of the early 2000s, only with a twist. If you dig thick and dirty riffs, you’ll dig Pale Mare.

ALBUM REVIEW: Olde - "Temple"

By: Mark Tremblay

Album Type: Full Length
Date Released: 11/08/2017
Label: STB Records |
Medusa Crush Recordings

Olde’s Temple” is doom metal done the way it should be. It is well-crafted, forward-thinking, and a contender for one of the best records of the year.

Temple” CD//CS//DD//LP track listing:

1). Subterfuge
2). Now I See You
3). The Ghost Narrative
4). Temple
5). Centrifugal Disaster
6). Maelstrom
7). Castaway

The Review

Olde can be best defined as “Efficient Doom Metal”; creating atmospheric and riff-centric music without wasting time. Olde’s Temple” showcases their most refined music to date; there is not another doom band that understands how to write great riffs, without them overstaying their welcome. Olde runs the gamut of everything the genre offers; from Kyuss-y blues, to darker and more punishing in bands like Yob.

The album starts with two quick stoner metal tracks; “Subterfuge”, and “Now I See You”; hypnotic riffs by riff-master Greg Dawson. Ryan Aubin’s familiar groove oriented drum style is particularly highlighted on these tracks, showing why he is the best drummer in the genre. The album takes a darker turn with more plodding dirge’s in “The Ghost Narrative” and “Temple”. Not only do they create a necessary balance in the records pace, but also show off some of the best lead guitar work on the record. The guitar solo on “The Ghost Narrative” is particularly brain melting.

The album concludes with their best track “Castaway” a very Baroness infused track filled with huge open chords, and interplay between major and minor keys. This song also flexes their atmospheric muscles; utilizing faint guitar feedback and other sound clips in a much more advanced manner to their previous release. This song concludes the album on an interesting footnote of what is to come for Olde.

Olde’s Temple” is doom metal done the way it should be. It is well-crafted, forward-thinking, and a contender for one of the best records of the year.

LABEL INTENSIVE: Christine Kelly of Tridroid Records Lists her Top 10 Labels to Watch in 2017

Tridroid Records is an independent metal label launched in July, 2012 by original owner Andrew Rehberger and was one of the earlier labels responsible for the metal tape resurgence in the US. In 2016, after 4 years and around 80 releases to their name, the label would change hands and who better to take over than self confessed Tridroid fan Christine Kelly.   Having been involved in underground metal for about 15 years and with a desire to run a metal cassette label for years taking over at Tridroid Records seemed like hand of fate had dealt a winning hand.

Tragically Andrew would suddenly and tragically pass away, so what better endorsement to his memory than to continue what he created, indeed under Christine’s tenure the label is going from strength to strength.  So with recent releases from  Heavy Temple, Un and the forthcoming album from our own Daniel Jackson via project Void Ritual,  we have invited Christine to talk about 10 labels she digs and one’s you should to watch out for in 2017 and beyond.

Before the days of Bandcamp, I mostly just looked for label owners who shared my taste and bought up anything they put out.  It's easier to pick and choose these days, but I still value finding labels that I can blind-buy from and trust that the release will look and sound amazing. Here's a few that I'm keeping my eye on this coming year: (click on the labels name for web links)

Graven Earth came from nowhere in 2016 and put out 100% quality releases straight outta the gate. Sarcoptes, Possessor, and the cassette version of Khemmis – “Hunted” are just 3 of the things that caught my eye.  I can't wait to see what comes from this label in the New Year, because if I don't know the material, I know I should.

Full disclosure: Label owner Joe Beres does a lot of design work for Tridroid, but that's because I saw his work while I was in Minneapolis and liked his clean style and taste so much that I pulled him into my camp. Small Doses releases material more on the drone/industrial/noise side of the spectrum but also represents the diversity of those genres, with everything from Locrian to Bastard Noise to Whitehorse released under his aegis. You can be sure that anything coming out of Small Doses looks amazing, too, because Joe's aesthetic sense and knowledge of packaging ensure that his output is nothing short of stellar.

If you're even remotely into electro-synth music, Werkstatt is a label to seek out. I'm a relative newbie to the new wave of electro, so I value someone who can sift through the glut and present the best of the best. The excellent art and design on Werkstatt's releases is something that inspires me, especially with their high level of output.

Sylvan Screams is the only label I've made it my business to own every single release by. To me, Mitch King at Sylvan Screams represents everything good about DIY cassette culture – he's a maniac, he knows his shit, and his releases consistently introduce me to bands I need to hear. It ain't an easy gig owning a tape label, and his devotion to it was one of the reasons I got into the biz. His stuff sells out pretty quick, so make sure you follow him on Facebook if you don't already.

The level of quality cassette releases on this label is just unprecedented. In 2016 they put out some of my favorites, including I Shalt Become – “Wanderings”, Krieg – “Blue Miasma”, and Onirik – “Casket Dream Veneration”. All have great packaging without being over-the-top. As a label owner, you want to see what other people are doing, and I'm always paying attention to FS/CofN.

Medusa Crush has been on my radar for a while. Their releases definitely don't adhere to a genre, and I know I'll hear something new and different every time. Then, MC released one of my favorite albums of the year with Lightsabres – “Hibernation”. Now I'm keeping an even closer eye on 'em, because, while they're not the most prolific label on my list, there's a lot to be said for quality over quantity.

The only reason this label isn't #1 on my list is because, if you're anything like me, you already know Bindrune. I've been blind-buying from Marty for over 10 years now, and his releases are the pinnacle of musical taste and design. I hope to still be buying everything he puts out 10 years from now.

This is another one that's lower on the list because, again, you probably know Caligari. When it comes to US tape labels that brought the format back to the fore, Caligari is one of the biggies. If it's a metal release on tape, Caligari has it. Not to mention that the label name belies a love of Weimar cinema that I very much appreciate.

Grimoire Records is another label I'm always watching. Genevieve, Torrid Husk, Myopic, Barbelith, and Dendritic Arbor are just a few of the reasons why. It's also nothing short of remarkable to me that the owner does all the recording, mixing, and mastering for all of his own releases. This level of involvement is a rare thing these days, and I give huge props to his vision.

Broken Limbs can do no wrong. Wode, Our Place of Worship is Silence, Thrawsunblat, Cara Neir, Crowhurst, Sea of Bones, Immortal Bird... I'm gonna be honest, every single release is a worthy listen. And the artwork? Simply amazing. Definitely one of my biggest inspirations.

REVIEW: Kurokuma - "Advorsus" EP

By: Chris Bull

Album Type: EP
Date Released: 0909/2016
Label: Medusa Crush Recordings

Like a bullet from a sniper, the opening riff from 'Lust' is delivered with pinpoint accuracy. 'Dark Triad' opens tribal drumming before hardcore inspired sludge (a la Love Sex Machine/Black Shape Of Nexus) gives everything a damn good thrashing. The riffs are groovy enough to get your head nodding but are out of the box enough to give you something to think about.  'Kali', the third and final song is simply brilliant. Thumping heavy riffs entangle with deconstructed song formats, making this a standout track on a standout release.

‘Advorsus CS //DD track listing:

01. Lust
02. Dark Triad
03. Kali

The Review:

Is 'Prog-doom/sludge/metal' a genre yet? If not, Kurokuma have just invented it. 'Advorsus' is the new EP from these Sheffield based atomsmashers, and contained within it's 3 tracks are enough weight, chops and ideas to make so called bigger bands scratch their heads and say "why didn't I think of that?!"

Like a bullet from a sniper, the opening riff from 'Lust' is delivered with pinpoint accuracy. Some punishing sludge makes way to some tribal drumming bringing to mind Sepultura's 'Roots' as the band put all their distortion pedals to work. There are so many layers to this band its unreal, the jolting bass weaves in between the drums and the NWOBHM meets Melechesh meets Crowbar guitar work is very impressive. 'Dark Triad' opens with some more tribal drumming and clean guitar work before hardcore inspired sludge (a la Love Sex Machine/Black Shape Of Nexus) gives everything a damn good thrashing. The riffs are groovy enough to get your head nodding but are out of the box enough to give you something to think about...and the guitar tone? Superb!

Listening to this, it's hard to believe I'm listening to a fairly "new" band, they sound so cohesive and fluid...but they only have a demo to their name; 'Kali', the third and final song is simply brilliant. Thumping heavy riffs entangle with deconstructed song formats, making this a standout track on a standout release. It's a track that has me searching the thesaurus for adequate superlatives; it's astonishing and corpulent.

I've witnessed this band live and can confirm that they are every bit as loud and heavy as they are on record. A band to keep tabs on, they'll surely be making waves in the very near future.

‘Advorsus" will be available Friday 9th September here

ALBUM REVIEW: Yeti On Horseback - "The Great Dying"

By: Chris Bull

Album Type: Full Length
Date Released: 30/09/2016
Label: Medusa Crush Recordings

Soaring melodies, crushing and enveloping riffs, brutal vocals, “The Great Dying” has  got the lot! It's beautifully downtrodden in it's make up and utterly captivating.

“The Great Dying” LP track listing:

1. Tree Of Death
2. Viking Mushroom Tea
3. Fables and Lies
4. Lynch (A Prelude)
5. Elephant Man
6. Dragged Down To Hell

The Review:

'The Great Dying' from Canada's Yeti On Horseback is as miserable as it is resplendent. With 5 of the 6 tracks pushing the 10-15 minute mark, you know you're going to be taken on a journey.

'Tree Of Death' kicks things into action with it's crawling pace and majestic guitar leads while the vocals scream and bellow over the top. There's definite nods to kings of gothic doom Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride prevalent on tracks like 'Viking Mushroom Tea' and 'Dragged Down To Hell', although with extra weight and distortion. The latter building a church with giant spires only to destroy it by the end.

Each track is an epic, 'Fables and Lies' offers some head banging riffs and great melancholic grooves. I'm reminded of forgotten British doomsters Centurion's Ghost for some reason. When the war drums meet the wall of distortion around the 7 minute mark it's wonderful. 'Lynch (A prelude)' bleeds into 'Elephant Man' and both feature samples from 1982's film of the same name. The latter is a near perfect song; soaring melodies, crushing and enveloping riffs, brutal vocals, it's got the lot! It's beautifully downtrodden in it's make up and utterly captivating.

This is a superb debut from a young band on an upward curve, it'll be interesting to see how the band progresses.

“The Great Dying” will be available via Medusa Crush Recordings from the 30/9/2016

Ommadon - "Ommadon" (Album Review) & Tour News

By: Charlie Butler

Album Type: Full Length
Date Released: 08/04/2016
Label: Dry Cough Records |
Medusa Crush Recordings

Events slowly unfold, occupying a compelling middle ground between the hypnotic amplifier worship of Sunn O))) and the barely-moving leaden doom of Monarch!. Riffs emerge from the gloom, shifting forms accented by gut-punching drums.  If immersion in deepest, darkest drone appeals, take a plunge in Ommadon’s well of despair.

“Ommadon” DD//LP track listing:

Side A). VI
Side B). VI

The Review:

Imagine being trapped in a cave. You realise all exits are blocked and notice water is pooling around your feet. As the water level rises you come to the grim realisation that there is nothing you can do but accept your fate. Ommadon’s new self-titled LP perfectly captures this claustrophobic finality.

The Glasgow duo have taken the seismic droning and glacial riffs of previous releases and consolidated them into the single punishing 42 minute track that makes up this LP. A buzzing cloud of ominous electronics sets the tone, their menace soon magnified by the oppressive weight of impenetrable guitar sludge. Events slowly unfold, occupying a compelling middle ground between the hypnotic amplifier worship of Sunn O))) and the barely-moving leaden doom of Monarch!. Riffs emerge from the gloom, shifting forms accented by gut-punching drums. Ommadon always threaten to lock into a groove but pull back from the precipice, driving the tension ever higher and denying the listener the release they crave. When they finally lurch into a planet-shifting doom assault after what seems like an eternity of creeping dread, the effect is devastating. When the dust finally settles following the conclusion of the LP, the relief is palpable.

Dry Cough and Medusa Crush Records have already served up some killer albums this year from the likes of Sea Bastard, Primitive Man and Sealclubber but this release is a different kind of heaviness. If immersion in deepest, darkest drone appeals, take a plunge in Ommadon’s well of despair.

Sealclubber - "Stoical" (Album Review)

By: Charlie Butler
Album Type: Full-length
Date Released: 05/02/2016
Label: Medusa Crush Recordings

Anyone who longs for the sludgy riffs, intricate structures and dissonant melody of early Mastodon, Baroness and Kylesa will be enraptured by this release.  “Stoical” is a phenomenal debut from Sealclubber. This is a record that marks them as a force to be reckoned with in the UK and beyond and sets the bar for gold-standard riffage in 2016.

“Stoical” CD//DD tracklisting:
1). Tales of a Romanian Horse Whisperer
2). Haima
3). Catalogue of Failings
4). St. Jude’s Waiting Room, Dead for 12 Days
5). Vow of Silence
6). I Only Desire the Things That Destroy Me

The Review:
Stourbridge is fast becoming an unlikely hotbed of punishing heaviness in the UK. Following Opium Lord’s awesome LP last year, Sealclubber’sStoical” is another crushing release from the Midlands town, the seismic impact of which is sure to be felt far beyond its borders.
This album has been a long time coming. Sealclubber whetted the appetite with a promising EP on local label Carnage Club in 2014, cementing their reputation with some powerful live shows. Their debut album exceeds all expectations though. Anyone who longs for the sludgy riffs, intricate structures and dissonant melody of early Mastodon, Baroness and Kylesa will be enraptured by this release.
Tales of a Romanian Horse Whisperer” begins with a shimmering haze of jagged guitars, soon shattered into oblivion by the sledgehammer impact of the band at full bore. Recalling the intensity and frantic complexity of Converge, the track switches between stop/start attacks and bursts of direct punk aggression. Sealclubber are at their most devastating when they lock into killer, hulking riffs, something they have an uncanny knack for. The foreboding intro of “Haima” and the sickening crunch which drags “St. Jude’s Waiting Room, Dead for 12 Days” into life are the finest examples of this here.
As the record progresses, Sealclubber add more dynamic shifts, demonstrating they are just as potent at lower volume. “Vow of Silence” takes their trademark weighty attack and expands the scope, spacious reverb swelling their ambition to epic proportions. Semi-instrumental finale “I Only Desire the Things That Will Destroy Me” provides the biggest surprise here. For the first half of the track the band create a hypnotic cloud of dense, effects-laden guitars and deftly restrained drums. Sounding like a cross between prime Mogwai and Bardo Pond’s quieter moments, Sealclubber cast an entrancing spell that lulls the listener into a false sense of security. This sea of calm makes the thunderous climax that follows all the more devastating.
Stoical” is a phenomenal debut from Sealclubber. This is a record that marks them as a force to be reckoned with in the UK and beyond and sets the bar for gold-standard riffage in 2016.

The Sludgelord Song Premiere: "Haima" by Sealclubber

By: Aaron Pickford

When I took to instagram little under 4 weeks ago to declare “Stoical” as a furious infusion of sludge encrusted hardcore and very much deserving of your time, little did I know or expect that we’d be teaming up with the good folks of Dewar PR to present the second track from that forthcoming album for your listening pleasure. How wrong we were.

Renowned for their blistering live shows and with a debut EP, “Sticky River” under their belts, Sealclubber’s early material only hinted at what these guys were capable of.  With their debut full length set for release only a few short days from now via Medusa Crush Recordings, one thing is for certain is that today’s premiere of “Haima” will see these Black Country Brawlers not only decimate your eardrums but perhaps introduce you to your new favourite band.

So unless you wish to endure ongoing pain and hardship for failing to check out this band, stop what you’re doing, tune in turn up and prepare to be broken, beaten and scarred.  I give you the mighty Sealclubber.  (N.B. No seal’s were harmed in the production of this transmission)

“Stoical” will be released this Friday 05/02/2016, but you can pre-order it  here. For all your physical needs, visit Medusa Crush Recordings here
