Label :   DIY
Silver Tongue, Tracklisting
1) Beautiful is this Burden
2) Amalgam
3) Matriarch
4) Clarus
5) Aggressor & Usurper
6) Silver Tongue
Bio

Light bearer formed in 2010, an all encompassing art/music/narrative project, based around a story written by their vocalist Alex, who drew influence from the writings of Philip Pullman’s “His dark materials” trilogy, John Milton’s Paradise Lost, and the Book of Genesis, an allegorical tale in which to forward atheist/anti theist and radical left wing/ free thought ideologies.
The band play a mixture of melodic post hardcore, progressive metal, post rock and ambient atmospheric drone, The songs are structured specifically to follow the narrative and therefore peak and trough in equal measure, mixing screamed desperate vocals with sung passages.
The story is split into four main parts, collectively known as the “Æsahættr Tetralogy”, the first is Lapsus, and subsequently Silvertongue, Magisterium and finally Lattermost Sword. The narrative begins with the metaphorical casting out of the protagonist Lucifer, an angel so loyal and in love with god that he could not submit when asked to bow before humanity, personified as Adam. For this act he is banished from heaven. Here he questions the Allfather – an entity who claimed the universe as his own. In doing so he realises his master has lied, and vows to reach out from his desolation and become his namesake, amongst the other fallen angels – to pass on the torch of free will to all life in the multiple universes.
The story continues in Silvertongue, Magisterium and Lattermost Sword in which the torch is borne by the metaphorical Eve – the ancestor of humanity, her rejection of the will of the allfather, her role and the role of the prophesied second Eve. The establishment of the church and the eventual culmination with the forging of a weapon capable of turning the tide, and a war against the patriarchal god.
Alongside the four releases are planned EPs and split records, beginning with Beyond the Infinite, The Assembly of God – an elaboration of the introduction to the first album. A second narrative runs through records not included in the four main parts, these chronicle the uprising of those opposed to the false god, recorded in the “Celestium Apocrypha”. Those privy to the truth, of the natural formation of the universe and the roles assumed by the characters in the story are charged with forwarding the original word of Lucifer, they are in turn, light bearers. This begins with the “Book of Watchers”.

Review

Light Bearer's second opus, Silver Tongue stands at a monolithic 80 minutes in length, while that may sound daunting to the average listener , any with previous knowledge of Light Bearer (through their debut “Lapsus” or 2 E.P’s) or frontman Alex CF’s previous group Fall of Efrafa will know what to expect.
The album serves as a continuation of the story started with the E.P’s and Lapsus, in layman’s terms a new take and metaphorical interpretation of some of the ideologies found in the  His Dark Materials trilogy by Phillip Pullmans, Paradise Lost by John Milton and the Divine Comedy by Dante.
What we have is here is an epic Sludge, Hardcore, avante-garde/post metal album, taking in influences from folk and classical music. It may sound confusing but imagine Neurosis, Godspeed You Black Emperor and Sludgey Hardcore in a blender and you might come close to the crushing sound of Light Bearer.
To explain the depth and breadth of this body of work in a short blog review would do it no justice, but from the opening lament of Beautiful Is This Burden through to the final one-two punch of the incredibly crushing Aggressor & Usurper and the cliffhanger/finale of Silver Tongue this will stand as one of  the year’s best hardcore/post-metal albums.
Go and immerse yourself in the sombre beauty of Light Bearer. And of course, to get a full sense of their ideologies and the full story of the planned quadrology of albums visit their official blog and listen through their brilliant discography from the beginning until this second full length.

Clamfight - "I Versus The Glacier" (Album Review)

I'm of the opinion that most heavy music should be dangerous. That's one of the main reasons we listen to it, right? The new Clamfight album 'I Versus the Glacier' may well be one of the most dangerous sounding records ever. It's like the audio equivalent of a bar fight. This is a well crafted second album with which you can gorge yourself silly on monster riffs, thunderous drumming and truly aggressive vocals. I highly recommend you check out Clamfight if somebody just vexed you. This is music to plan revenge to!

The Review

I'm of the opinion that most heavy music should be dangerous. That's one of the main reasons we listen to it, right? The new Clamfight album 'I Versus the Glacier' may well be one of the most dangerous sounding records ever. It's like the audio equivalent of a bar fight.

Seriously, bring a knife.

Clamfight occupy that common ground between thrashy, punk stylistics and sludge. It's confrontational while retaining elements of groove. You can hear the southern influences here; heavyweights like COC, Eyehategod and other luminaries of the New Orleans scene. Clamfight put just as much of their own bark into the bite though. Blues, classic rock - the harmonising guitar pieces evoke Thin Lizzy in their technical accuracy. I might be making this sound like fighting music but it's no less sonically proficient. These gents have some serious chops.

Album opener 'The Eagle' features a fuzzed out build to a classic, slow juggernaut of a riff. The solid backbeat lends weight to the more soulful elements. The vocals of drummer Andy Martin offsets these moments by being insanely aggressive. It's almost like he's arguing with you, determined to show you the error of your ways. And if you're smart, you'll listen.

'Sandriders' has more of a classic metal vibe to it while not sacrificing any of that righteous hardcore fury. Built for headbanging in its purest form, the only respite it offers toward the end is that slow tempo change that all sludge fiends adore. The churning, chugging pace will finish off what little you have left of your neck.

'Age of Reptiles' is another album standout that again features those filthy, deep-fried guitar licks. But my favourite cut from this effort is 'Mountain'. This slow, colossal piece features everything I love about Sludge: the pace, the soul, the grim intent. It drones solidly onwards with immense rhythms towards its goal and you get the feeling that nothing can stop it from inflicting it's will upon its desired target. Throw in a good ol' boy solo at the end that an evil Skynyrd would be proud of and you have a winner on your hands.

My hope is that with some national tours under their belts in their native land and some well deserved coverage from metal press that this group has the ability to be potential future stars of the scene. This is a well crafted second album with which you can gorge yourself silly on monster riffs, thunderous drumming and truly aggressive vocals. I highly recommend you check out Clamfight if somebody just vexed you. This is music to plan revenge to!

Bio

Zombified started as a two man project of P.Myrén and P.Fransson in winter 2006. After some beers and a three song demo they decided to record a full album.

They got in contact with the session members "Von Pest" and M.Askinen and with them they gave birth to the first album ’Zombified Slaughtermachine’.  After the release, M.Fiebig and R.Karlsson joined the band on drums and vocals and ZOMBIFIED didn´t waste any time and created a new album called "Carnage Slaughter And Death”.

After the recording M.Fiebig decided to leave the band and a new drummer was found in J.Johansson.  Now they got signed to German label Cyclone Empire and although the second album ‘Carnage Slaughter And Death’ isn´t released yet, the boys have already started writing new songs for the next album.

Review

Zombified are a Death Metal Band from Sweden (not to be confused with the Death metal band called Zombified from Belfast in Ireland).  Hailing from Sweden, Zombified are described as trying to combine Death metal or d beat / Crust punk on their current release "Carnage Slaughter and Death”.
The most prominent of the two is Death Metal for sure but there are undertones of a more crusty sound, with D beat riffs rearing there ugly head throughout the album. The albums opener and title track "Carnage Slaughter and Death” begins with a fierce sounding riff underpinned by savage blast beats, it then leads us into a great D Beat section followed by some old school Death Metal brutality!
Second track “Pull the Trigger “pretty much follows on with this formula and gives us a great D Beat Death metal hybrid.  Stand out track for me is "The Flesh Of The Living " which opens up with a sound not dissimilar to fellow countrymen WolfPack , one of those great simple but rocking Motorhead D Beat type riffs .
The Zombified sound is also full of grinding with the drummer blasting his way through tracks like “Suffering Ascends" with ease, this track ends with one of the albums slower moments, double bass drums and a creepy Sample about war! Comparisons with Swedish Death Metal Legends Grave are pretty spot on but I reckon fans of The Rotted (formerly Gorerotted) will enjoy this album a lot. The d beat Death metal tag doesn’t quite suit Zombified as much as their British counterparts but it’s not too far off the mark.
Carnage Slaughter and Death is the bands second release after "Zombified Slaughtermachine" and pretty much follows a tried and tested path. That said it’s a great sounding record with enough great songs and some great playing and a sterling production to appeal to fans of Old school Death Metal with a hint of crust thrown in for good measure.

Bio

Brutality, consciousness, doggedness, these are some of many terms suited to describe the music and the story of BLOCKHEADS. Since about twenty years ago, the combo skims France and Europe, hurling continuously ultra violent grindcore to the listeners.

In 1992, they were teenagers who, after many hours of listening of Napalm Death, Carcass, Bolt Thrower and Godflesh, among others, decided to take instruments … Brutality, extreme style, grindcore is dissected, digested by the band, a music of the most violent kind. Not dogmatic or demagogic, but with a social and healthy consciousness, in front of a crawling individualism and a rotten world which reduces individual to a simple goods. After hardly a few months of rehearsal, a demo tape came out in ‘93 and the band supported Loudblast and Carcass in Nancy in 1994. The year after, their first album LAST TRIBES was released on their own label «Blockheads Tribe». The band played more and more gigs then to support this new record. LAST TRIBES has the fury and the ardor of a first album, a shout in the shape of outlet, a Punk-Grind fury without concession...

The reputation of the band started to grow out of the French borders and BLOCKHEADS was from then actively involved in the «International grindcore scene». It was in 1997 that their first Split 7inch EP with the Death/Grind Austrian band Mastic Scum came out.

At the same time, the band met the Swiss band Nostromo with whom they will share lots of gigs and multiple parties… This friendship with Nostromo will become a concrete reality in 2002 with a Split 7 inch EP which was released by Molar and Shogun Records. The band shared gigs with lots of different bands coming from different scenes like Obituary, Soulfly, Knut, Inhumate, Deranged, Krisium… In 1998, after heavy line-up changes, the band self-released its second album called WATCH OUT and BLOCKHEADS will not stop moving forward. The band signed up with Bones Brigades Records in 2000 who suggested to them to compile LAST TRIBES and WATCH OUT albums on a single CD called FROM WOMB TO GENOCIDE. The original editions were totally out of stocks and are now today collectors. A new step is reached.

It was also on Bones Brigades that the third album will be out in 2001, a grindcore masterpiece called HUMAN PARADE. The evolution towards a more mature and more personal grindcore is then clearly noticed by the critics. From squatts to festivals, from clubs to bars, BLOCKHEADS delivers its grindcore to the listeners. We were at the beginning of the new millennium when the band met Overcome Records, who proposed them to play with… Napalm Death and Nasum! They could not refuse and BLOCKHEADS delivered a memorable concert. The band continued to play in front of a public with every time more people, played at the Fuck The Commerce in 2002 or at the Fury Fest in 2003 and the name of BLOCKHEADS will appear in lots of chronicles, interviews and other bands’ thanks list... In 2004 and 2005, the band composed and continued to perform live, sharing stages with Nasum, Converge, Napalm Death, Extreme Noise Terror, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Cephalic Carnage, among others…

2006 was the year of the 4th album, SHAPES OF MISERY, produced in the famous LB Lab Studio (R.I.P.) by Stéphane Buriez, also well known as the Loudblast guitarist/singer. Twenty tracks of devastating grindcore where BLOCKHEADS manages to register its trademark, with new influences and a much better technical execution. This aggression is supported by ultra tight drums, a guitars’ wall and the vocal power of Xav surrounded by hysterical backing vocals... After the Obscene Extreme Festival, BLOCKHEADS began the «Blasting Tour» with Mumakilconcretize this friendship, a split with both bands came out in 2008 on Bones Brigades who will also repress and distribute SHAPES OF MISERY after the demise of Overcome Records. The vinyl version will be released in 2009 on Up-To-Eleven Records, label of one of the guitarists. The band takes part in the tributes to Nasum and Repulsion and continues to hurl its grindcore to Europe, sharing stages with Brutal Truth, Ingrowing, Skitsystem, Yacopsae, Sayyadina... During the summer of 2009, the band experiences a great moment, on the Hellfest Terrorizer stages along with Napalm Death, Electric Wizard, Eyehategod, Soilent Green, Brutal truth and lots of other great bands...

After some line-up changes, which postponed the recording of the follower to SHAPES OF MISERY, the band worked very hard and get out in 2010 the GRINDCORE OVERDOSE DVD, a highquality DIY piece of grindcore gathering 2 gigs as well as a retrospective of the band. In 2010, the Split with Mumakil was re-released in a vinyl version by Relapse Records.

In 2011, BLOCKHEADS slows down the rhythm of its live appearances to focus on its 5th album, THIS WORLD IS DEAD which was recorded during the second semester of 2011 in Geneva with Jéjé from Mumakil. The band is now very excited to spit its grindcore to the face of the world, and it will be done this summer for its second participation to the Obscene Extreme festival who will then have its 20th years of grindcore, still and always furious and without concessions... TO BE CONTINUED...

Erik (bass, background vocals)
Nico (drums, backing vocals)

Review

Fans of no nonsense grindcore will be very pleased to hear that Blockheads have returned with their 5th full length album.  Having recently signed to Relapse Records, Blockheads seriously deliver the goods with this release titled "The World is Dead.”

The world is indeed a scary place and this could very well be the soundtrack to our demise. The album clocks in at just over 40 minutes and features 25 songs in total, so no surprises as to what you are going to get! Opening track "Already Slaves" sets the tone nicely with classic grind riffing and manic crust punk energy. The performance of drummer Nico throughout this entire album is astounding, manic blast beats are delivered with precision and tons of aggression.

The album is helped along hugely by a top class production job from Jerôme Pellegrini of fellow Grindcore band Mumakil.  All instruments are clearly audible in the mix (something many other grind releases suffer from is a poor production). The guitars and bass are driven to the max but are very clear in the overall sound, all four band members deliver throat ripping intense vocals throughout.

Lyrically ‘The World Is Dead’ deals with lots of the usual subject matter associated with grindcore and punk etc, but hey these thing need to be said as the message doesn’t seem to be getting across! There is enough variation throughout the 25 songs to keep you seriously entertained here, with some slight changes of pace, d-beat style riffs and some seriously groovy napalm mid paced moments. ‘Pro-lifers’ starts with a huge crushing riff  before heading off into punk / grind territory , all delivered in 2.14 seconds!  Blockheads are going to be gigging around Europe in support of this release so go check them out. Ear plugs recommended.

LOTHORIAN - WELLDWELLER

Welldweller cover art

Lothorian is a Sludge/Doom/Stoner Metal Band from Belgium

The members are;

Jurgen M. - Drums, Vocals
Thomas F. - Guitar
Niels C. - Guitar, Vocals
Roenjer O. - Bass
Thomas B. - Vocals

Right Sludge Fans what we have here is a creepy and down-tempo brilliant album from LOTHORIAN. A superb band blending Doom, Sludge and Stoner Metal to great effect.

Their debut album - Welldweller - is a 6 song and 30 minute blast of high octane Sludge/Stoner Metal riffs with a big helping of occult based Doom riffs aided along by creepy audio soundbytes. If your a fan of Church Of Misery then your going to be right at home in your crypt here. As Welldweller is one brutal mean fucking album you won't be able to get enough of.

First track - Witchunt - sets the scene in what is to come over the next 30 mins or so. Don't adjust your headphones. Play as loud you can and rock out to the expert riffage going on.

The vocals even though on the clean style of things are superb through out. They add an eerie sense of wonder to them to match the bleak riffage on show. The album is full of great riffs and Lothorian don't hold back for a second. The 30 mins just flies by. They don't waste a second of that lean, mean running time. They go straight in for the kill.

Check out other excellent tracks - Welldweller, Cult and Shallow Ground. My fave track has to be the 7 minute epic - Doomsday Calling - as it's a great tune full of life and atmosphere with great demonic riffs to match. Wait till the 6th minute mark when a creepy and sublime riff comes out of nowhere with some hollow angelic vocals lurking in the background. Possibly my fave moment on the entire album as it gives the listener a short sense of hope before the darkness creeps backs in to restore decay and destruction.

The album is brilliantly produced and showcases Lothorian's superbly well. The band are great musicians and they prove this time and time again. Welldweller is an excellent album and I expect great things to come from this hugely talented band in the years to come.

GODSTOPPER - What Matters

What Matters cover art

Godstopper is a Noise/Sludge/Doom/Pop/Rock Band from Canada

The members are:

Miranda Armstrong- Bass
Mike Simpson- Drums
Phil Miles- Guitar
Tobin Simpson- Guitar

Now I am going to publish the press release which tells you all about this fucking brilliant album.

"Godstopper (Toronto, Canada. ex Column Of Heaven) are finally releasing their debut album of sui generis sludge after some well received demos. They've created their own sound rather than just knocking together some hackneyed Eyehategod riffs for instant satisfaction. There's a lot of depth to this particular cesspit of noise.

After a month of listening to it on repeat on my commute to work I thought it'd make a great first release for Milgram Records. Absurd Exposition, Anthems Of The Undesirable, city17 and Insulin Addicted records are helping out as well.

Some people have already had kind words to say about the album:-

"doomy, dissonant noise rock, which also includes elements of sludge and is reminiscent of the Melvins at times. Beautiful melodies and catchy hooks are also prevalent, particularly on the Pixies-esque Clean House." Exclaim.Ca

"Maddened and uncaring, Godstopper channels melody through a concentrate of full-blooded sludge. And while the remnant influences of Today is the Day and Swans are still clear, What Matters is such a cathartic, unpredictable listen that it defies pigeonholing." LurkersPath.com

"A friend described them as a cross between Today Is The Day and Weezer. It's in that weird world of Harvey Milk and Mare and Torche where doom meets pop. However, Godstopper are slightly more on the sick and twisted side of the riffage and also quite super tuneful. Oh yeah, chuck in some Melvins as well." SpoonfulOfTar.blogspot.co.uk"

Well after reading the above advert I downloaded the album and started to listened to it right away.

All I can say is FUCKING WOW. What Matters is a stunning and brilliant release of epic doom-pop riffs. Fans of Harvey Milk and Torche will be in Sludge Metal Heaven. As this album fucking rules from start to finish.

Delicious dark and violent Doom-Pop done at it's most twisted and finest. What Matters is an astonishing release. If I heard this back in 2012 it definitely would of made my best of 2012. Top 10 contender for sure. It's seriously that brilliant.

It's already starting to get quite a buzz amongst the Stoner Metal fraternity. Now headover to BandCamp now as it's available on Pay Now Deal.

BATILLUS - Concrete Sustain - Review

Batillus is an Industrial/Doom/Sludge Metal Band from Brooklyn, NY, USA

The members are: G. Peterson, W. Stabenau, F. Kainer, G. Summers

Now Batillus are a band most of us should be familiar with. They have been releasing a string of acclaimed releases since their formation in 2007 when they started purely as an Instrumental Doom/Sludge Metal Band.

Now 6 years later they are a fully formed Industrial/Doom/Sludge Metal collective unit winning praise from fans and critics alike for their blend of great industrial based sludge metal riffs.

Their 2011 debut album – Furnace – won them a loyal following in the Sludge Metal underground for Batillus own take on Doom/Sludge Metal. It was an album that I rated very highly two years ago. Well after a two-year break – Batillus are back with their most creative work to date. – Concrete Sustain.

Concrete Sustain is a 35-minute journey into the harsh industrial wastelands of Doom/Sludge Metal. As Batillus have embraced their industrial metal parts like never before to portray an unflinching world at war with itself. Everything is played at a mid-paced tempo to match the harsh cold atmospherics lurking underneath the albums exterior.

First track – Concrete – is aptly named as everything is loud, heavy, cold and leaves you with a bleak grey mood throughout. However, you cannot deny who brilliantly the song is put together with ambient glitches and noises blended with superb vocals tearing through your pitiful world. As the song frequently shouts – DOMINATE and DOMINATE they do from here now in.

Up next is Beset another devastating journey that Batillus take you on. Noises and riffs are your guide through the bleak territories the band easily conjures up at will. Harsh grizzled vocals and ambient-based industrial riffs make this another unsettling journey into the realm of Batillus. The landscape is bleak, harsh and frightening just like their music. The eight mins does feature an impressive and vast array of sounds and ambient noises that fit brilliantly well within Batillus' blend of Doom/Sludge Metal.

You can tell this is an album that Batillus took their time with, as a sublime riff comes out of nowhere around the 5 minute mark to give the listener that little bit of hope amongst the darkness and ruins around them. But alas, it is a short respite before the loud angrier Batillus shine through to claim the listener’s soul for their own.

That is how Concrete Sustain plays out for the remaining 5 songs. Bleak Industrial based Sludge/Doom Metal riffs with a great apocalyptic vibe. The band builds up the tension and atmosphere on each song before all heck breaks loose. Adding more terrifying layers of sound with creepy lyrics to match. None more so on Mirrors. This song will surely give you chills and nightmares for many days to come.

This is an album that might take you a few listens to get the full effect as Batillus have truly evolved with their sound from Furnace. Sounds and noises come at you from nowhere in the vast darkness Batillus have offer on here. Concrete Sustain is an album that is truly alive. They have added a dark demented soul to their music and it is not a pretty sight.

Batillus have taken another almighty step towards greatness. Concrete Sustain is a phenomenal release and one that should rightly see Batillus winning more plaudits than ever before.

Amazing and Highly Recommended.

Concrete Sustain will be available to buy on Seventh Rule Recordings from March 2013.
