REVIEW: Mantar - "The Spell" (EP)

By: Charlie Butler

Album Type: EP
Date Released: 31/03/2017
Label: Nuclear Blast

Mantar’s strength lies in their ability to maintain a perfect balance of dirty, underground grit and catchy stadium-bothering rock’n’roll ambition. Opening track “Pest Crusade” demonstrates this in style. It is a complex track composed of shifting tempos and styles, encompassing shards of raging black metal, stop/start riffage and blasts of no-nonsense stoner punk.  The three flawless tracks that make up “The Spell” demonstrate that Mantar’s unique brand of heaviness is growing ever more potent.

“The Spell” 10” LP//DD track listing:

1. Pest Crusade
2. Age Of The Vril
3. The Spell (feat. Okoi Jones / Bölzer)

The Review:

Hamburg power duo make a welcome return to action with new EP “The Spell”. Following hot on the heels of last year’s excellent “Ode To The Flame” LP, this release is a short sharp reminder of the band’s fierce doomed-out black metal mayhem.

Somehow the band still manage to make this sound like a fist-pumping anthem which is no mean feat.

Age Of The Vril” is more straightforward affair, lumbering doom verses giving way to epic choruses that erupt into a high-octane race to the finishing line. “The Spell” rounds things off with Mantar at their most basic, a two-chord rock’n’roll thrash that the band milk for maximum results. They are aided by guest vocals from Okoi Jones of Bolzer who aids an air of grandeur to the pause for breath before one last charge into the void.

The three flawless tracks that make up “The Spell” demonstrate that Mantar’s unique brand of heaviness is growing ever more potent. Hopefully they are back soon with a full length to deliver on the tantalising promise of this release.

ALBUM REVIEW: Black Tomb - "Black Tomb"

By: Stiq

Album Type: Full Length
Date Released: 31/10/2016
Label: Graven Earth Records |
Hellas Records

“Black Tomb” CS//DD//LP track listing:

1). Under the Pine
2). Eyes at Midnight
3). Swine
4). Mortuary Rites
5). Draped in Flesh
6). Lust and Saturn
7). Turning Worm
8). Church on the Hill

The Review:

Black Tomb will bring the darkness out of you. Stomping though the muck of an empty soul. A once innocent Doom/Stoner child left rotting in a sludgy old church basement with his warped Electric Wizard records and beaten mercilessly with raw electric power from an old musty amp caked in depravity.

The mind can’t help but get lost in powerful riffs drenched in the fumes of hatred and despair while the fuzz shakes your core and vibrates the cavity causing all vital organs to hit the floor with a splat, while you bang your head against the wall from sheer madness. This is certainly something you’re going to want to listen to very very loud and with little regard to your own mental stability.

Hailing from New England, Black Tomb has brought to the table their debut self titled release just in time for the Halloween season. Now you can keep all the candy for yourself by scaring away all
those pesky trick-or-treaters, while leaving a bad taste in your neighbors mouth.

This album is going to be a staple for your record collection and will be released on double disc vinyl for your listening pleasure soon enough. Until then, feel free to rot what’s left of your already decaying brains by listening to them here

p.s. Drug use is highly recommended while ingesting this noise.

“Black Tomb” is available digitally here and on cassette here

The Sludgelord "Sour 16 for July 2016

By: Aaron Pickford

As we talk stock at The Sludgelord, that we achieved the milestone of publishing 4000 articles and over 2000 album reviews this week (n.b. Steve Howe’s contributions cannot be understated), our commitment to offer you many more magnificent riffs is unwavering, therefore it is time cast our minds back upon the month of July and digest the 16 albums that would become July’s sacrilegious ‘Sour 16’, the finest and most profane riffs around bundled together into a premium sized sonic soufflé.

You know the drill, each month; you the reader are unwittingly compiling a list of the top 16 records that we featured in July, covering all genres of metal.  Is it not a chart, in which reviewers or contributors extol their opinion about their favourite music.  The ‘Sour 16’ are the records that have been trending the most at Sludgelord Headquarters.

The results are compiled based on page views alone and calibrated into the list below. So kick back, with a cold one and let the power of the riff compel thee! All reviews can be viewed by clicking the artwork and we have included album streams wherever possible. (Total views since their publication are highlighted in red)

16). Graves At Sea – “The Curse That Is” (303)

The album opener and title track drops the anchor to establish the length, tone and rhythm this 76 minute voyage is about. An unpredictable, violent haze of amplifier worship, “The Curse That Is” is a strong candidate for one of the top 10 albums of 2016.

15). The Human Condition – “Pathways” (308)

This is a classy album, full of doom and melancholy. The band are great live and boasts some of the North West's most enduring doom talent from such luminaries as Unsilence, for instance. The band play a blinder throughout and front man Nathan Harrison really captures the feeling of powerlessness so prevalent in the lyrics and themes here. Harrowing stuff indeed.

14). The Order of Israfel – “Red Robes” (330)

Titled "Red Robes," their sophomore album is a crushing slab of classic doom. Twin guitar harmonies permeate the arrangements; slow, lumbering beats intermingle with high-energy, uptempo passages; stark vocals deliver creep out lyrics; all in support of their almighty neck breaking riffs.

13). Wytch Hazel – “Prelude” (343)

If you have any interest in Tull, Ash, Lizzy, Sabbath et al and yearn for a band to come along and play like those heroes of a bygone era, Wytch Hazel are definitely worth your time and money. They are a great band and one that is doing something unique- out are occult tropes and devil-ish imagery, in are song-writing, medieval sonics/themes and enthusiasm rather than cynicism. A triumphant record on every level.

12). Bleak – “No Light No Tunnel” (350)

From the jagged intro of “Teeth” to the guttural barks that bring “Fuck Your God” to a close, Bleak do not let up for a second. Every track here is a potent blend of Converge’s nastiest moments and the crushing attack of Coalesce brewed in a vat of filthy, thick sludge.  “No Light No Tunnel” is not pretty but makes for a horribly captivating listen. Few records this year will match the vitriolic onslaught Bleak deliver here.

11). Adolyne – “Of Ash/Of Shit/Of Shame” (363)

The whole album feels like it’s teetering on the edge of collapse which lends a real thrill and urgency to proceedings. This is felt most strongly during epic closer “Brawler’s Fracture”. Intense, restless riffing akin to Keelhaul is swallowed by a buzzing swarm of squealing guitars that threaten to consume all. Just before chaos fully descends, the track breaks into a crushing slow-motion finale.  “Of Ash/Of Shit/Of Shame” is a skilfully constructed visceral journey. Adolyne create a unique noise, a captivating damaged racket that will enrapture those with a taste for uneasy listening.

10). Wo Fat – “Midnight Coment” (400)

Stoner, psychedelia, doom and classic rock all coalesce here with massive results. Only one track under five minutes, the rest sprawling languidly well over that mark. Hendrix jamming with Fu Manchu and Sabbath¸ simply put, this is storming stuff; wrought from the heaviest of iron and the lightest of air. Massive.

9). Ghold – “PYR” (444)

“PYR” is an exceptional release from Ghold that really cements their position as the finest heavy act in the UK right now. It is the sound of a band who exist in a world of their own, above and beyond our plane of existence and drifting ever closer to the outer limits.

8). Reproacher – “Nature’s Bastard” (475)

Huge, awkward riffs dominate the landscape, their ugly, discordant racket is reminiscent of Converge at their nastiest.  This is a mighty offering, a captivating combination of savage intensity and considered dynamics.

7). Cough – “Still They Pray” (507)

6). Solothus – “No King Reigns Eternal” (748)

An encompassing album with an unforgiving heaviness, "No King Reigns Eternal" sees Finns Solothus’ improve on their debut album, and release one of the heaviest doom releases so far this year. Instilled with death metal elements and no signs of calm, it is a harrowing album full of weighty monolithic riffs and a murky atmosphere.

5). Wormed – “Krighsu” (953)

Krighsu’ is ten tracks of unrelenting tech-death, set at a warp speed that has no intention of ever slowing down.  Space is infinite, and it seems WORMED’s ability to create jaw-breakingly heavy music is just as vast.

4). Cold World – “Autumn” (1033)

Börner writes and creates music that should appeal to both purist and tourist alike. Not because he haphazardly smashes the pieces into each other, like a child with their toys, but because his instincts and strengths do so organically.  “Autumn’ is flush with atmosphere and overall is a cohesive and brilliant listening experience.

3). Wretch “Wretch” (1877)

This is a fine debut and a much needed shot of trad doom, with actual songs, - in an era of obsession with amps and pedals (but without, you know, actual songs and stuff). It is a triumph for this intrepid trio and surely there are great things to come for the band. Make no mistake, Wretch are here and Wretch will bring you real doom or throw you out of the bar if you don't like it.

2). Periphery – “Periphery III: Select Difficulty” (2009)

Experimental metal bands like Periphery will (hopefully) never settle for sticking to one particular groove.  Constantly innovating, this adds to “Juggernaut”, jumping off from that platform and diving into dark, unexplored depths.  Music should surprise and inspire, and “Periphery III: Select Difficulty” does both with eye-opening results.  Just watch out for unexpected face-melting, okay?

1). Dunsmuir – “Dunsmuir” (2021)

Dunsmuir, manages the uncanny trick of amounting to the sum of its parts. The record's players have some serious pedigree and none if it is wasted. Vinny Appice is as powerful as ever, with a beastly snare sound, while Bone and Davis are a formidable strings team. Fallon puts in a hardworking and uniformly stellar shift as per usual.  Simply put, if you like Clutch and Dio-era Sabbath, you will be right at home here. If you are a fan of Fu Manchu, there are sounds for you here as well. This album rocks, it’s that simple.

A big thank you as always to our amazing writers, your dedication knows no boundaries and for that I am truly grateful.  February’s “Sour 16” features reviews by:  Richard Maw, Daniel Jackson, George Parr, Charlie Butler, Chris Markwell, Doza Hawes  & Gerardo Pacheco

Graves At Sea - "The Curse That Is" (Album Review)

By: Gerardo Pacheco

Album Type: Full Length
Date Released: 01/04/2016
Label: Relapse Records

The album opener and title track drops the anchor to establish the length, tone and rhythm this 76 minute voyage is about. An unpredictable, violent haze of amplifier worship, “The Curse That Is” is a strong candidate for one of the top 10 albums of 2016.

“The Curse That Is” CD//DD//LP track listing:

1). The Curse That Is (11:14)
2). Dead Eyes (11:08)
3). Tempest (07:02)
4). The Ashes Make Her Beautiful (15:15)
5). This Mental Sentence (05:00)
6). The Waco 177 (09:22)
7). Luna Lupus Venator (02:53)
8). Minimum Slave (14:19)

The Review:

Graves At Sea have been around the metal block, a few times I may add, for the better part of this century. Formed originally in Phoenix, AZ, the band gained traction with their debut EP “Documents Of Grief” (Self Release, 2003). They inked a deal to put out the “Cirrhosis/Atavist Arise 7” (Southern Lord, 2004) and then delivered a tormenting split with Asunder (“Life Is Abuse”/20 Buck Spin, 2005). During the course of those two recordings, they relocated to Oakland, CA and rumours boiled over about a potential full length, which never materialized. Hitching on the maritime nature of their name, they returned to the ocean and vanished in the horizon, disbanding in 2008.

2012 came around and the North-Pacific current carried them to Portland, OR, where they resurfaced. More or less following the previous pattern, they put out the “This Place Is Poison 12”” (Eolian Empire, 2014) accompanied by a “Master Of Reality” side B that I’m sure made The Eternal Idol proud. That snowballed to yet another split, this time with Cape Fear’s sludge veterans Sourvein (Seventh Rule Recordings, 2014).

Last year, when I heard GAS had signed with Relapse Records I rejoiced. Then, when they announced the release date I thought: are they serious? Slated for April 1st, 2016 it seemed like the joke was on everyone. You see, it’s easy to dismiss the information, as the band had never released a full length in their entire career. So here we are, 13 years later with high expectations and trust me, they are met with aplomb.

Before we dive in, I just want to point out the fact that Orion Landau (YOB, Red Fang, Inter Arma) continues to astonish me with his ill-as-fuck art.

The album opener and title track drops the anchor to establish the length, tone and rhythm this 76 minute voyage is about. Feedback emerges like a Megalodon from the Marianas Trench courtesy of Nick Phit’s left handed custom SG, crushing you with one of most progressive riffs I’ve heard from the band ever, to then blast off full throttle and unleash that characteristic GAS brand of sound. We can attest here that the production has been polished by Brad Boatright’s skilled hand. Nathan Misterek’s vocal range is on full display here, going from hellish screeching to low rumbling growls. “Dead Eyes” comes in next and features the band riding a more familiar song writing pattern, discharging power-chords right behind Bryan Sours’ burly fills. The track closes with what I interpret as the first of a few well-orchestrated interludes, those which emphasize on alternative instrumentation. As unpredictable as Tiamat herself, “Tempest” honours its name with a violent whirlwind haze of amplifier worship. All 3 of these tracks were released before the record came out, from here on out we head into uncharted waters.

Bisecting the album, comes the magnum opus “The Ashes Make Her Beautiful” which intertwines with the second acoustic interlude on the record. A 15+ minute testament of GAS, this track unfolds and expands their sound beyond anything presented so far in their multiple previous offerings. Grab your headphones and allow it to drag you to the depths of the Challenger Deep. An auditory delicacy. The record moves forward to bring us back to the plodding sludge roots of the group with “This Mental Sentence”, one of shortest and catchiest songs in their entire repertoire.

I happened to be in Texas, just north of Waco, for business reasons, during the unfortunate shootout that took place there over a year ago. People who were clearly not part of the Motorcycle Club lifestyle all had an opinion on the situation and all coincided that this was more of a slaughter than a shootout. “The Waco 177” pays tribute to this sad moment in Texan history. The momentum shifts yet again with the final interlude in “Luna Lupus Venator” and leaves us at the end of the plank with closer “Minimum Slave”. Much like Tiamat’s multiple heads, the track rolls like a frenzied shanty, traversing effortlessly through sludge, doom ‘n’ roll and stoner rock. It is here where the bass really shines and drives most of the riff action.

All in all, this is a solid effort by Graves At Sea, I appreciate that they did not include any old tracks and delighted us with brand new material. I enjoyed the faster tempo that they are now playing versus the slower, more traditional sound they were known for. Don’t get me wrong, impending doom will still make you break your neck mid-air, but slicker pace rounds out the mix overall. A strong candidate for top 10 2016.

The Sludgelord Song Premiere - "Blackened Violet" by Beldam

By:  Aaron Pickford

Hailing from Charlottesville, VA, Beldam meaning a lonesome or malicious old woman, are the architects of the type of punishing sludge that dungeon dwellers beat their victims too whilst flies buzz around the stench rotting flesh, such utterly contemptuous  filth it makes the walls wretch. Formed in 2013 and taking influence from bands ranging from Sleep, EyeHateGod, Graves at Sea and of course the mighty Black Sabbath, their buzz saw guitars and primordial  vocals and lyrics invoking death, will ensure that these merry bunch of bastards ruin your day.

Releasing a five-song self-titled demo through the Hota Rex Records imprint in 2015 (available here), Beldam now signed with the appropriately monikered Horror Pain Gore Death Productions, will release their debut full length, entitled “Still the Wretched Linger” on June 17th.  Today, we have been given access to their library of horror and we hope you’d like to join us to bear witness to “Blackened Violet”.  You have been warned!!

“Still the Wretched Linger” is available to ore-order link here

“Still the Wretched Linger” CD//DD track listing:

1). Needles
2). Blackened Violet
3). The Foundling
4). From Grave to Cradle

The Sludgelord News: Daily Digest

Your rundown of the top sludge news stories of the day …

PSYCHO CALIFORNIA FESTIVAL - Festivals are all the rage in Europe, they make-up an important part of the European musical identity, but festival culture has lagged behind stateside. A number of stoner, doom and sludge related festivals have cropped up in the Eastern and Midwestern United States in recent years, but the West Coast has been sorely lacking for major festivals, until now. The PSYCHO CALIFORNIA FESTIVAL is set to take place on May 15-17, 2015 at The Observatory in Santa Ana.

So who’s going to be there? The festival lineup reads like a who’s who in doom: Kylesa, OM, Earth, Russian Circles, Bedemon, Conan, Wrench, Eyehategod, Indian, Earthless, Pallbearer, Stoned Jesus, Old Man Gloom, Cave In, Acid Witch, Truckfighters, Tombs, Bang, Electric Citizen, Coffinworm, SubRosa, Eagle Twin, Mammatus, True Widow, Anciients, Bellwitch, Dead Meadow, Lord Dying, Death By Stereo, Radio Moscow, Ancient Altar, Samsara Blues Experiment, Atriarch, Elder, Mothership, The Well, Deathkings, Wo Fat, Rozamov, Destroyer of Light, Highlands, Bloodmoon, Slow Season, Goatsnake, Crypt Trip, Wrench, Lords of Beacon House, Tumbleweed Dealer, Sinister Haze, Blackout, Red Wizard, Banquet and Loom.

But the biggest news of the day came with the announcement of the festival’s headlining bands and they are eye-popping to say the least. CULT OF LUNA is set to close out the first night (May 15), SLEEP the second (May 16) and the legendary PENTAGRAM will close out the festival by performing First Daze Here in its entirety on day three (May 17).

Ticket prices for the festival range from $149.50 for a three day pass to $256.66 for a three day VIP pass.

CHERUBS - Noise Rock is making a comeback. It’s been well over 30 years since Sonic Youth showed a world dominated by the rock n roll minimalism of punk rock that you don’t even need to know two chords in order to rock out. The band influenced a generation of disaffected youth, not the least of whom was Kurt Cobain, to simply pick up a guitar and wail away. But it seems the Noise Rock scene isn’t making a comeback all by itself. After 20 years away, noise rockers CHERUBS have returned to lend a helping hand to the revival.

The Texas trio’s new album ‘2 Ynfynyty’ will be available March 3 on Brutal Panda Records. You can stream the first single, ‘Crashing the Ride’ at Noisey. Fans of Whores will want to take a listen. Cassette and vinyl pre-orders are available here, while digital pre-orders can be taken right here.

The theater of worship is youtube and the subject is Swedish Black Metal band DARK FUNERAL’s new single ‘Nail Them To The Cross’.

MORGOTH  - And finally, in keeping with the day’s theme of bands returning after a lengthy hiatus, German death metal band MORGOTH will return with a new studio album after a 19 year absence, Century Media revealed.

The 11-track album, ‘Ungod’ will be released March 30 in Europe and April 7 in the U.S. and Canada. You can stream the new single, “Black Enemy” right here on soundcloud.

“After 18 years we can finally present a first glimpse at our new full length album “Ungod”!” the band said in a press release. “We started with the songwriting in January 2013 and finished the recording process by the end of December 2014. It was an awesome experience to go through the sometimes very complex and challenging process of writing and recording an album again.

“Our goal was to present some real Morgoth-style Death Metal, which closes the gap between “Cursed” and “Odium”. We hope that we have achieved this goal and our supporters and friends will like the final outcome.

“The idea behind the song “Black Enemy” is that this evil force rests within all of us and all we can do is trying to keep that beast under control. The “Black Enemy” represents the dark and destroying part inside of us and the lyrics deal with someone who is not able to control it anymore, committing a murder in the end”.

According to the comments on Soundcloud, reaction to the new song has been enthusiastic. You can catch Morgoth live throughout the year at the following dates and places:
