REVIEW: Arctic - "Arctic" (EP)

By: Gerardo Pacheco

Album Type: EP
Date Released: 24/06/2016
Label: Outer Battery Records

This is a fine example of well executed rock, with an excellent blend of influences that don’t overstep anywhere to make the band sound like rip offs of any kind.

“Arctic” DD//LP track listing:

1.Over Smoked (08:36)
2.Cryptic Black Sun (04:07)
3.Burnt Ice (08:05)
4.Daewon (04:57)
5.Higher (03:23)

The Review:

I’m well aware that every time your intention is to read a review, your expectation should be that subject matter will trump personal opinions. You want to know what the album is about, prior to putting it on the device of your choosing for listening, or measuring your proper judgment of said album against a peer of the realm, namely a reviewer from whatever your source of information is. That said, I find myself perplexed with this band, more by the individuals that play the actual sounds they taped. This being a debut EP, I did some research on who these guys were, as I only had the EP to go by, which was given as a gift from a fellow Sleep fan. Digging beyond the cool as fuck cover art from Arik Roper (Sleep, Earth, Weedeater) I hit a wall when I found references for these people on skateboard related articles. These three dudes are pro-skaters. Pro-skater defined as sponsored athletes, backed by a brand named Volume 4 (sound familiar?). And of all places, they come from California. Oceanside, to be precise, dating back to 2011. So, by definition you would expect them to sound like they belong on a Tony Hawk game soundtrack, right? Prepare to have your archetypes broadened.

A blizzard of flangered white noise along with numbed cymbals gusts in to prepare us for what’s to come. Reverbed guitars that remind us of cavern echoes compliment the intro before allowing the fuzz pedals to take over and reveal the beginning of this 30 minute trek. “Over Smoked” then gives way for the initial riff to further develop, as well layered production from Jordan Andreen (Earthless, JOY) provides quite the lysergic experience over the course of its almost 9 minutes. And I say almost, as the band hits the brakes and shift gears mid-track to steer us towards stoner rock pastures. “Cryptic Black Sun” lures you in with 70s infused classic rock, cornering the listener to bathe its ears in slow burning acid, leaving us charred with psychedelic euphoria.

As we continue to dwell on the Arctic soundscape we can appreciate the tripping textures on “Burnt Ice”, which features heavily distorted vocals, a first on the record. The LSD-dipped melodies mangle riffs with blues roots and fry them in blown-out amplifier tar. A face-melting solo stretches well over half of the track, which serves as a conduit between chunky power chords juxtaposed against hallucinatory hooks. “Daewon” bridges over the drum fill from “Burnt Ice” and sways over to colourful psych-doom for a minute, or 3, as organized chaos brakes out to throttle your senses as the song progresses, throwing a spotlight on ‘Figgy’ who shreds solo after solo as if he was hitting a perfect line of park benches, sidewalks and the occasional obstacle. Much like a buffalo stampede “Higher” rolls in with the kind of bravado and muscle that was apparently the norm for well-respected bands back in the day. That does not last long, as the band surprises us with a turgid mass of crushing filth. Not much is left on this hike and as we soar to the peak of the proverbial mountain, a final sprint is made by the guys in an effort to conclude the ascent.

This is a fine example of well executed rock, with an excellent blend of influences that don’t overstep anywhere to make the band sound like rip offs of any kind. Definitely keep them on your radar, I would not be surprised if Heavy Psych Sounds Records picks them up and issues a split with Karma to Burn? One can only wish.

Wo Fat - "Midnight Cometh" (Album Review)

By: Richard Maw

Album Type: Full Length
Date Released: 20/05/2016
Label: Ripple Music

Stoner, psychedelia, doom and classic rock all coalesce here with massive results. Only one track under five minutes, the rest sprawling languidly well over that mark. Hendrix jamming with Fu Manchu and Sabbath¸ simply put, this is storming stuff; wrought from the heaviest of iron and the lightest of air. Massive.

“Midnight Cometh” CD//DD//LP track listing:

1). There’s Something Sinister in the Wind
2). Riffborn
3). Of Smoke and Fog
4). Le Dilemme de Detenu
5). Three Minutes to Midnight
6). Nightcomer

The Review:

Wo Fat return, ten years on from their debut with this thundering and groovy beast. Stoner, psychedelia, doom and classic rock all coalesce here with massive results. Only one track under five minutes, the rest sprawling languidly well over that mark. Hendrix jamming with Fu Manchu and Sabbath is a starting point, I guess.

The likes of “Riffborn” (apt!) and “Of Smoke and Fog” are huge, crushing and full of  head nodding grooves (with some cowbell here and there). “Three Minutes to Midnight” represents the more metal end of the band's spectrum with some serious fuzz to the sound. Records like this are somewhat difficult to review; all tracks are uniformly good, production excellent and ironically nothing therefore stands out. Suffice it to say that if you enjoy Karma to Burn or any of the bands mentioned above, then you will enjoy this.

Certainly, this Dallas outfit are masters of their craft; shifting seamlessly through the gears and creating stoner-ish vibes one minute and seriously weighty riffage the next. Thus, when closer “Nightcomer” arrives the groove and riffs are thick, but not at all out of place. Simply put, I wasn't expecting to enjoy this record as much as I did on first listen... and it has only got better with each subsequent play. This is storming stuff; wrought from the heaviest of iron and the lightest of air. Massive.

Karma to Burn - "Mountain Czar" EP (Review)

By: Heather Blewett

Album Type: EP
Date Released: 26/02/2016
Label: Steamhammer/SPV

“Mountain Czar” is an infectious record that certainly incites uncontrollable foot tapping and head nodding. Perhaps not quite as edgy as some of their earlier albums like “Almost Heathen” and “Wild Wonderful Purgatory”, nevertheless it is a solid representation of Karma to Burn and their incomparable style, with concluding track “Sixty-Three” channelling a cowboy western sound with potentially the strongest riff of the record.
“Mountain Czar” CD//DD track listing:
1). Sixty Two
2). Sixty One
3). Sixty
4). Uccidendo Un Sogno
5). Sixty Thee

The Review:
Since their highly acclaimed debut in 1997, Karma to Burn have consistently wowed fans with their uncompromising (mostly) instrumental sound. Often labelled stoner rock, although they themselves have said they don’t smoke marijuana and is therefore perhaps not representative of their sound.  Karma to Burn hail from ‘The Mountain State West Virginia, so for those compelled to compartmentalise we’ll go with mountain rock.
Aptly naming their EP “Mountain Czar” Karma to Burn return armed with riffs, riffs and oh yeah more riffs.
Maintaining the listener’s interest with no vocals isn’t the easiest of tasks, the music has to be that much more engaging to compensate. Luckily for Karma to Burn they are no strangers to laying down a killer riff, alongside a varied structure full of twists turns and general unpredictability. Tracks “Sixty-Two” and “Sixty-One” (yes they come in that order) deliver with groove galore and irresistible foot stomping rhythm. The songs flow with deft musicality, yet imbue an erratic unpredictable thrill. “Uccidendo Un Sogno” is the only track with vocals, a cover of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers “Runnin Down a Dream” and sung by Stephanie Savy in her native tongue of Italian. It really works. The vocals sit perfectly with the groove laden riffs, and a spectacular guitar solo tops it off. Concluding track “Sixty-Three” embodies the aforementioned genre of Mountain Rock, channelling a cowboy western sound with potentially the strongest riff of the record.
“Mountain Czar” is an infectious record that certainly incites uncontrollable foot tapping and head nodding. Perhaps not quite as edgy as some of their earlier albums like “Almost Heathen” and “Wild Wonderful Purgatory”, nevertheless it is a solid representation of Karma to Burn and their incomparable style.

And now you’re all caught up in the world of sludge.

The Sludgelord Presents: Marc Gaffney's Top 10 Records of 2014

This year was an interesting year in music for me. In my listening of many different albums, I found I was taken more by the sheer emotional power of what was being pumped out of my sound system. With the power came some very different vocal and lyrical identities that had not shown their faces yet and I am glad they let you into see what lay behind the mask.
Here we go
10) Witch Mountain- Mobile of Angels

A remarkable vocal experience by what I would call one of the best female voices to have hit the air ways in years, Uta Plotkin. The way in which this album is mixed is so right on. Every instrument really has a place in the layout and that is why it sits at that level of taking over and putting you on auto pilot.
9) Nick Oliveri’s Uncontrollable – Leave Me Alone

This album was a piece of excitement for me as I really had no idea what to expect. Personally I found I enjoyed this album more than his former band mates release. The rock was let to roll in his latest output of rock, punk, swagger to the bank bag of tunes. With exceptional guest experiences, this piece of wax was a sheer delight and is still a delight each time I put it on.
8) Fu Manchu- Gigantoid

One of my favorite bands of all time come back with a guitar album that is drenched in the Creepy Fingers fuzz assault of Bob Balch, for whom I would call one of the most influential guitarist of an era. Packed with a foundation so elite from their bass playing guru (also the chef behind of Creepy Fingers effects Brad Davis) and drumming to a vocalist that has it all, this album harkened back to the days of ‘King of the Road’ and ‘In Search of’.
7) Lo Pan- Colossus

Having heard some of these songs live before they had come out was a nice light into what would be their remarkable display of power, rights of rifftacularity and vocal hierarchy from my man Jeff Martin. To say I am not a fan of these 4 gentleman would be an understatement as they do it like no one else in the business right now and they’re on their way to being a huge name after their trip overseas in April.
6) Karma to Burn- Arch Stanton

This album has a raw feeling like you just wrestled a bear and fucked the bear up beyond belief. Tones for days, with such a display of percussion, that drummers should have to listen this and be able to play this work until they are let out into the world. I found myself doing 80mph in a 30mph while this barn burner was blasting through my speakers, like it was testifying to why Rock n Roll is not dead by any means.
5) Pallbearer- Foundations of Burden

Having played a show with this band in Boston, was my first insight into what they were all about. Then when upon hearing their latest release, I was completely hooked. Packed with a sheer melodic guitar attack and a pounding bass, a superb foundation was laid out. Now, throw in a masterful drummer, Mark Lierly, one of my favorites in the game, and the groove elevates the performance and the music to another worldly jaunt.
4) Brant Bjork- Black Flower Power

I truly feel that this is the best album Brant has put out. It is an essential groove outlet powered by straight up riffs and lyrics from an Iconic artist. The sense of plugging in and playing rings from speaker to speaker in what has become a go to album when you need to feel the heartbeat of a Saturday night. Every song on this work is a fresh and new musical outlet, one in which you need to plug into.
3) YOB-Clearing the Path to Ascend

This Portland 3 piece has been a stalwart on the scene and this album has simply put them into a different atmosphere. To be able to convey such feelings in an emotional whirlwind is rather amazing, but this band is amazing and holds the key to the future in their musical endeavors which are nothing shorter than being labeled as remarkable.
2) Mastodon- Once More ‘Round the Sun

This piece has everything from intricacy to 4 on the 4 boogie. The maturation process with this quartet is a melting pot of so many musical influences that the band has truly given praise to what they dig and did not care if the popular vote had them homecoming kings, they let the music do the talking. Lyrically this album flows like a great story from your favorite author and leaves you wanting the next saga to come out in a hurry.
1) D’Angelo and the Vanguard- Black Messiah

I know this will not be a popular number 1, however, if you are a music fan, this album is the shit. I am into soul music, which means music that is for and made from the soul. Much like the 9 I have discussed, all of those I would term as soul music, as all of these albums come from the writer’s true soul. This piece of work was 14 years in the making and it blew me away from start to finish. From Pfunk to Marvin to Prince to Stevie, the artist, D’Angelo has taken from the Garden of musical Eden and made a fruit salad so funky that if you do not feel yourself needing to move your body, then, take care.
