VIDEO PREMIERE: Seattle noise makers Into The Storm gives us a lesson in "Maths"

Seattle noise makers Into The Storm have returned with their latest effort, “Where the Merfalo Roam”. The album which will be released on November 11th via Alive and Breathing Records, is a complex album containing ten compositions that have been painstakingly pieced together riff by riff.  Fans of Baroness, Mastodon and Pelican should appreciate this album since it captures the essence of those bands at times, but also contains its own unique flavour.  For example, the first half of the song “Maturin” contains a brass section and then shifts to noisy blasts of heavy for the remainder of the song.   There’s even some honky-tonk, chicken pickin’ to be found in “Truck Van Trailer” hidden near the end of the sludge infused chaotic riffing.  In conclusion, Into the Storm have created their most progressive and impressive work to date since their inception in 2010.

Today at The Sludgelord we can offer you a taste of this monstrous record in the form of new video for the track “Maths”, which is undoubtedly one of the album highlights .  My calculations are that this track is a stonewall face melter.  “Where the Merfalo Roam” can be preordered here

Slabdragger - "Evacuate" (Review)

Words by: Chris Bull

The Review:

I've been granted the absolute privilege of reviewing the first track released by Slabdragger from their forthcoming album 'Rise Of The Dawncrusher' and what a Slab it is!

'Evacuate' is the kind of glorious stoner tinged groovy doom sludge metal we've come to expect from Slabdragger but unlike anything they've released before. If you've yet to hear it, it's got more in common with 'Erroneous Maximus' than any other track from previous album 'Regress' but more of a Hellbastard vibe during the opening few bars.

The vocals from both guitarist Sam Thredder (who also recorded the album) and bassist Yusuf Tary are on top form, trading verses and combining on other sections to brilliant effect, just as they always do! Some excellent groove laden licks make you instantly smile and nod along before it goes all sludgy and doomy in a way that only Slabdragger can...then there's more groove as both vocalists scream over the top and it goes all 'Bab El Mandeb' on us. Today Is The Day's Steve Austin mastered 'Rise...' and his strokes of genius allow the high end to shine through without taking away any of the bass and rounding it all out to allow the devastating effects to burrow furiously into your brain.

Fans of Slabdragger will love this, hell, fans of heavy music in general should love it, it's absolutely brilliant and if this is a precursor to what lies ahead on 'Rise Of The Dawncrusher' we're all in for a wonderful treat.

“Rise Of The Dawncrusher” is available for preorder here and will be officially released on the 26 February 2016

The Sludgelord News: GOATSNAKE SHARE NEW JAM, "GRANDPA JONES"

Goatsnake are sure to get your motor running with their latest jam "Grandpa Jones", a celebratory rock 'n' roll affair all about the life and times of a standout elder gentleman that Team Rock are premiering today. Pete Stahl's vocals cruise with ease alongside those of backing singers, Dem Preachers Daughters, while almighty riffs lurch forward with the rumbling horsepower singularly linked to Greg Anderson's guitar work. Says Anderson of the track; "Grandpa Jones: One of the first of the new songs we wrote.  Channeling Flag and Sabbath (that ole’ moldy chestnut!).  Lyrics about keeping the yout juice flowin’!”

You can also listen to "Black Age Blues" and "Elevated Man" ahead of Black Age Blues' release date in just over a week and a half. The inner layout of the artwork can be viewed on the band's webpage

Black Age Blues will be released through Southern Lord Recordings June 1st, and preorders for the album are now live. In addition to physical preorders, the record is also available via iTunes, offering the tracks “Black Age Blues”, “Elevated Man” and "Grandpa Jones" for instant download, which are now available to purchase individually. Check out the preorder options at the new Goatsnake store, via BandCamp and iTunes.

Following a sold-out performance in secluded Pioneertown, California and a record listening party in Los Angeles this past weekend, Goatsnake now prepares for their hometown record release show for Black Age Blues with Southern Lord brethren Bl’ast and Eagle Twin on the 20th. Just days later, the band makes its cross-country voyage to Maryland Deathfest in Baltimore, marking the band’s first East Coast performance ever. Less than a week later, Goatsnake will hit Europe for a week-long tour which kicks off at Temples Festival in Bristol, and includes a headlining set at Siegen, Germany’s Freakvalley Festival. Upon their stateside return, they’ll headline Crucialfest in Salt Lake City, Utah, with additional tour dates being scheduled.

With nearly fifty minutes of Goatsnake’s most soulful and boisterous material to date, the quartet expands their already mammoth tones and pummeling rock riffs with a variety of additional influences and elements on Black Age Blues, an instant classic, with each one of the nine songs an anthem, and each of its members — vocalist Pete Stahl (Scream), drummer  Greg Rogers (The Obsessed), bassist Scott Renner and guitarist Greg Anderson (Sunn O))), Southern Lord Recordings) — all in top form. With guest contributions from David Pajo (Slint, Aerial M, Papa M) and soul vocal trio Dem Preacher’s Daughters, comprised of Wendy Moten, Gale Mayes and Andrea Merrit, the album was recorded and mixed at Rock Falcon Franklin, Tennessee by Nick Raskulinecz (Queens Of The Stone Age, Foo Fighters, Alice In Chains, Mastodon, Rush) and mastered by Brian Big Bass Gardner (N.W.A., Stevie Wonder, Parliament).

The Sludgelord News: ROYAL THUNDER SHARE NEW SONG “TIME MACHINE” VIA NPR

Royal Thunder, the Atlanta-based outfit helmed by Mlny Parsonz and Josh Weaver, share Crooked Doors’ album opener, “Time Machine,” via NPR (http://www.npr.org/2015/03/05/390980154/royal-thunder-time-machine).

“You can’t go back,” says Parsonz of the song’s message. “There is no such thing as a time machine.  Live for now and learn forever. Beware the black streak that resides within each one of us. Relax, it’s just livin’.”

The band gave fans an early listen to music from Crooked Doors with the recent stream of “Forget You” (https://soundcloud.com/relapserecords/royal-thunder-forget-you/s-JHKg9), which Paste Magazine said takes “the atmospheric elements of their music even further. It’s a song that has a heady blend of the sludgy blues stomp that garnered them widespread attention and even heavier, darker elements than before.”

Pre-orders for Crooked Doors are available now with the music available on CD/2xLP/Digital via Relapse (http://bit.ly/royalthunder).  Digital pre-orders (https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/crooked-doors/id963913145) include an instant download of “Forget You” and “Time Machine.”

Royal Thunder plays SXSW on March 17 (Dirty Dog).  The band joins Halestorm and Rival Sons for a brief western U.S. tour in June:

June 5     Anaheim, CA     The Grove
June 6     San Francisco, CA     The Regency Ballroom
June 8     Portland, OR     Roseland Theater
June 9     Seattle, WA     Showbox SoDo
June 10     Boise, ID     Revolution Center
June 12     Missoula, MT     Wilma Theatre
June 13     Spokane, WA     Knitting Factory
June 14     Vancouver, BC      Commodore Ballroom

Royal Thunder is Mlny Parsonz, Josh Weaver, Evan Diprima and Will Fiore.  Royal Thunder began work on the album in early 2014, returning to work at the Aria Recording Studio where they recorded the band’s critically lauded debut, CVI.  Pitchfork described singer Mlny Parsonz as “a blues-rock banshee of a woman, equal parts riot grrl and gospel diva” while Spin said she “commands a bluesy mix of Led Zep and Sleater-Kinney.” Rolling Stone’s David Fricke said Weaver’s playing has “the meaty, base elements of early-Seventies British blues.”

The Sludgelord News: UFOMAMMUT Releases Track From New LP And Interview Through Several Global Branches Of Noisey; Fifth Making-Of Ecate Video Released + Preorders Posted

In a multi-nation takeover, multiple international branches of Vice Magazine's music channel, Noisey, have cooperatively premiered "Plouton," the gargantuan second movement on UFOMAMMUT's impending seventh LP, Ecate. In addition to leak of the new track, the fifth installment of short videos documenting the mammoth undertaking of the Ecate recording sessions has been posted, focusing on the album's vocals being harnessed, and preorder packages for the mighty record have also been activated.

As with the rest of Ecate, "Plouton" is a bit varied from the majority of UFOMAMMUT's vast recorded catalog, the album unloading a more dense and upbeat percussive and riffage attack, taking the band's cosmic, psychedelic tones to some of their most devastating capabilities in the band's now decade-and-a-half-long mission. At just over three minutes in length, "Plouton" consumes only a fractional amount of time compared to most of their extensive doom/sludge anthems, but helps create a distressing amount of tension early in the album which uncoils and consumes everything in earshot over the subsequent tracks. Spearheaded by Noisey's Brazilian sect, the magazine's American and Italian branches have also joined the mission to help disseminate the premiere of "Plouton" to as much of the globe as possible. The track is joined by an interview with the band on the creation of Ecate and their upcoming international tour plans following the album's release, once again through Neurosis' mighty label cult, Neurot Recordings, in conjunction with the band's own Supernatural Cat Records.

Endure "Plouton" and the interview with UFOMAMMUT now at Noisey Brazil HERE, US HERE and Italy HERE.

Scope the fifth of seven mini-documentaries on Ecate's recording process at THIS LOCATION and stand by for the final episode to leak in the coming days. Also catch up with part 1, part 2, part 3 and part 4.

Preorders for Ecate including limited edition vinyl, CD, shirt, and bundle deals are now available. In North America stop by the Neurot Recordings store HERE and internationally click to Supernatural Cat's store HERE.

UFOMAMMUT's massive international tour in support of Ecate begins directly after its release, with several Italian shows preceding their two-week European tour with the UK's Conan, and including appearances at both of this year's Desertfest events in London and Berlin. And May and June will see the band on their first-ever tour of North America. Initiated by their anticipated performance at this year's Maryland Deathfest with lablemates Yob, Neurosis and countless others, UFOMAMMUT's month-long North America Spring 2015 will run from May 13th through June 13th, with direct support from Relapse Records' Usnea.

The Sludgelord News: KLONE SIGN TO PELAGIC RECORDS / ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM 'HERE COMES THE SUN’

Released 27th April through Pelagic Records.

12 years after their debut release, KLONE, hailing from France, are back with their 6th studio album: “Here Comes The Sun”.

“Here Comes The Sun”, reveals a mature rock band whose musical universe has expanded and developed over the years. When taking a look at the band’s discography, their progress appears like a logical evolution: each album unique, and each served to make the follow-up less predictable.

The band's metal roots have slowly but confidently given way to an ethereal rock sound, vintage but modern, delivered by heavy riffs, delay-soaked guitar-reverb and soft vocal melodies. Nowadays while melancholy is the defining paradigm of the band's sound, KLONE go on to exploit a much broader emotional spectrum.

2012's The Dreamer’s Hideaway already showed more progressive outlines. This time, the band gives each melody time to unfold... and this is where the strength of this album lies: coherence, patience, and continuity. The transitions between riffs and songs never feel rushed or forced -- everything is happening at the right time, and for a reason. The music, the lyrics and the artwork reflect upon one another, and suck the listener into a universe revolving around the sun, which is the central theme of the album.

KLONE have opened for bands like Gojira, King’s X and Orphaned Land, and have played the main stage at Hellfest. With "Here Comes The Sun", the band's song writing, led by the charismatic voice of Yann Ligner, has reached the next level. All of this combined "Here Comes The Sun" is the album that will see KLONE thrust into the limelight.

Stream 2 tracks from the album in full:

Press:
“Monster riffs crush down throughout like hulking slabs of concrete and a thunderous rhythm section with lightning forks of melody melds well with the angry yet highly accessible vocals from Yann Ligner.” – Terrorizer

“The intelligent construction of those ambient walls of noise and the way the band makes playing progressively arranged songs sound positively loose and carefree.” Metal Hammer

The Sludgelord News: WINO & CONNY OCHS Debut First Single From Freedom Conspiracy LP Through Classic Rock Magazine; Preorders Posted

With as much vibrant, organic beauty coursing through its veins as it has distressed melancholy, the new collaborative LP from WINO & CONNY OCHS titled Freedom Conspiracy is being prepared for release via Exile On Mainstream Records, and today the maiden single from the record has been made available courtesy of Classic Rock Magazine.

Over the course of Freedom Conspiracy's lucky thirteen anthems of top-tier contemporary Americana, tales of regret, love, loss and redemption come alive through the dynamic dual guitarist and singer/songwriter approach of these two iconic artists, and one of its most heart-wrenching tunes would undoubtedly be its fifth track, "Shards." With a beautiful blend of electric slide and acoustic guitar tracks and the layered, clear vocals of both CONNY OCHS and SCOTT "WINO" WEINRICH telling the tale of a man whose heart and soul are beyond broken -- they're shattered into a thousand pieces -- and his attempts to sort himself back into once piece from amidst the wreckage.

The Sludgelord News: GRUESOME: First Taste Of Debut From Death-Worshipping Supergroup Now Playing; Savage Land To See Release Next Month

Savage Land is the forthcoming debut full-length from death metal perpetrators, GRUESOME. Featuring within their bestial ranks members of Exhumed, Possessed, Malevolent Creation and Derketa, GRUESOME is a supergroup of sorts paying homage to the game-changing sounds of Death's early recordings.

GRUESOME was borne out of guitarist/vocalist Matt Harvey (Exhumed) and drummer Gus Rios' (Malevolent Creation) mutual involvement with the Death To All tours - Harvey serving as frontman for the original nine-member mini-tour and Rios performing "Baptized In Blood" and working with DTA drummer Sean Reinert on the following US tour where Exhumed filled in as support on a several dates. After discarding the idea of putting together another incarnation of DTA to focus exclusively on Death's first two albums, Harvey half-jokingly suggested writing their own songs in that vein. It wasn't long before the idea gained traction, and the "band" had five songs written. Rios later recruited Possessed guitarist Daniel Gonzalez and Derketa bassist Robin Mazen to record the material in Florida.

The result is the eight scathing tracks contained on Savage Land. Recorded by Rios and Gonzalez at Riversound Studios in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, mixed by Jarrett Pritchard at Mana Studios in St. Petersburg, Florida and including a guest guitar solo on "Closed Casket" by James Murphy as well as cover art by legendary illustrator Ed Repka (Death, Megadeth, Massacre, Athiest et el), Savage Land is a truly gruesome slab of late-'80s/early-'90s Florida-styled death metal.

Set for release next month, today team GRUESOME offers up fourth track "Hideous" for communal absorption. The track is based on 1932 horror film, Freaks, in which the characters were played by people who worked as carnival sideshow performers and had real deformities. The original version was considered too shocking to be released, and no longer exists.

Rios further elaborates, "'Hideous' was one of the last songs to be written for the album. By that point Matt had really hit a stride with the writing and this song turned out to be one of our favorites! It seamlessly blends influences from the first three Death albums with even a tiny tip of the hat to Human. Listen closely after the solo section...you'll swear it's 1988 for real! We sincerely hope that everyone enjoys this as much as we did creating it! Hail Chuck [Schuldiner]!"

Sample "Hideous" via SoundCloud HERE or YouTube HERE.

Tragically, there will never be any truly new Death material, but GRUESOME is humbly determined to keeping the band's classic sound alive as faithfully as possible. Savage Land will be released in North America via Relapse Records on April 21st, 2015, April 17th in Germany, Benelux and Finland and April 20th in the UK, rest of the world on CD and digitally. For preorders scroll on over to THIS LOCATION. Digital preorders are available via iTunes HERE and the GRUESOME BandCamp page HERE.
