  In the band's own words, "Dead Actors is our tribute to both 90's indie rock and to the duality of the meaningfulness of conscious existence; it's self aware almost to a fault. We were trying to take the feeling of Slint, June of 44, maybe a dash of Dazzling Killmen, Engine Kid, and even Soundgarden and filter it through Manitoban wheat grass. For some reason it feels very 'Canadian Prairies' to me, and I really like that."

  Rock, noise, math, indie – KEN mode offer a root to it all on Success, locating a common ancestor that's behind all that they do and have done as a band. It's one seriously fermented sound that pervades these recordings, a goldrush of skewed rhythms, corrosive riffs and scorching pickup abuse, so diligently pulled off and inherently important to the band. Their path first appears to be one of complex inspiration, but a lineage soon becomes clear, lighting up a way through concentric circles of legacy that encompasses Revelation Records, Dischord, Touch And Go, Sub Pop – the full spread of inventive heavinesses that fed in to the grunge estuary, and out in to the open sea of independent labels in the final decade of the last century, where KEN mode first appeared. 

  Success is a funny concept; in its rawest, most pure form, it is entirely relative, and this was the subject KEN mode chose to approach their new album with. Sonically, and lyrically, a shift has been made from the classic spitting of metallic hardcore tinged vitriol, that the band has become known for, to a rawer, more mature, even humourous indie rock aesthetic. In April 2014, the band set out to pay tribute to where they've come from: a salute to both their Canadian Prairie roots, and a time when they first started to care about making music; the burgeoning 'grunge' and Touch & Go/Dischord scenes of the late 80s/early 90s, with bands like Nirvana, Big Black, Cop Shoot Cop, The Cows, Circus Lupus, and Drive Like Jehu warping their teenage minds. Lyrically, the band's fascination with comedy spirals around classical western concepts of 'success' - from employment, sex, marriage, religion, socioeconomic standing, and particularly the many perceptions people have of how they, and those around them, happen to fit into the world. 

  Recorded with legendary engineer Steve Albini (Nirvana, the Jesus Lizard, PJ Harvey and so many more) to capture the material in a fully live and analog session in the band's hometown in November 2014, brought to fruition is the most raw, rock and roll sound the band has ever put forth.

The Sludgelord News: PALLBEARER PREMIERES FIRST MUSIC VIDEO EVER FOR "WATCHER IN THE DARK" + ON TOUR THIS MAY, JUNE AND JULY

Watch Pallbearer's epic and cinematic new video for "Watcher in the Dark"

The video was directed, shot and edited by Adam Heathcott (Hometapes) and produced by Adam Heathcott and Sara Padgett Heathcott and marks the first ever official music video for the band.  

  Formed in 2008 by Joseph D. Rowland (bass) and Brett Campbell (vocals/guitars), Pallbearer grew from the fertile underground metal scene of Little Rock, AR.  A year after their formation, the band released their first three-song demo (with guitarist Devin Holt), which garnered well-deserved attention.  Pallbearer went on to release Sorrow & Extinction in early 2012 on well-respected Canadian indie label Profound Lore, and instantly made waves among listeners and critics who found the band’s compositional paradox of vulnerability and might unparalleled in the metal world.  Sorrow & Extinction proved to be an unequivocal masterpiece in any genre of music and compelled Pallbearer to reach even further creatively for what would come next.  In August of 2014, the band released the monumental and acclaimed,Foundations Of Burden; an album that delves even deeper into Pallbearer’s melodic contexts, adding a new and compelling dimension to music which has long since proven itself to be inexorably captivating.

   Goatsnake are sure to get your motor running with their latest jam "Grandpa Jones", a celebratory rock 'n' roll affair all about the life and times of a standout elder gentleman that Team Rock are premiering today. Pete Stahl's vocals cruise with ease alongside those of backing singers, Dem Preachers Daughters, while almighty riffs lurch forward with the rumbling horsepower singularly linked to Greg Anderson's guitar work. Says Anderson of the track; "Grandpa Jones: One of the first of the new songs we wrote.  Channeling Flag and Sabbath (that ole’ moldy chestnut!).  Lyrics about keeping the yout juice flowin’!”

  Following a sold-out performance in secluded Pioneertown, California and a record listening party in Los Angeles this past weekend, Goatsnake now prepares for their hometown record release show for Black Age Blues with Southern Lord brethren Bl’ast and Eagle Twin on the 20th. Just days later, the band makes its cross-country voyage to Maryland Deathfest in Baltimore, marking the band’s first East Coast performance ever. Less than a week later, Goatsnake will hit Europe for a week-long tour which kicks off at Temples Festival in Bristol, and includes a headlining set at Siegen, Germany’s Freakvalley Festival. Upon their stateside return, they’ll headline Crucialfest in Salt Lake City, Utah, with additional tour dates being scheduled.

  With nearly fifty minutes of Goatsnake’s most soulful and boisterous material to date, the quartet expands their already mammoth tones and pummeling rock riffs with a variety of additional influences and elements on Black Age Blues, an instant classic, with each one of the nine songs an anthem, and each of its members — vocalist Pete Stahl (Scream), drummer  Greg Rogers (The Obsessed), bassist Scott Renner and guitarist Greg Anderson (Sunn O))), Southern Lord Recordings) — all in top form. The Sludgelord News: UFOMAMMUT Releases Track From New LP And Interview Through Several Global Branches Of Noisey; Fifth Making-Of Ecate Video Released + Preorders Posted

In a multi-nation takeover, multiple international branches of Vice Magazine's music channel, Noisey, have cooperatively premiered "Plouton," the gargantuan second movement on UFOMAMMUT's impending seventh LP, Ecate. In addition to leak of the new track, the fifth installment of short videos documenting the mammoth undertaking of the Ecate recording sessions has been posted, focusing on the album's vocals being harnessed, and preorder packages for the mighty record have also been activated.

As with the rest of Ecate, "Plouton" is a bit varied from the majority of UFOMAMMUT's vast recorded catalog, the album unloading a more dense and upbeat percussive and riffage attack, taking the band's cosmic, psychedelic tones to some of their most devastating capabilities in the band's now decade-and-a-half-long mission. At just over three minutes in length, "Plouton" consumes only a fractional amount of time compared to most of their extensive doom/sludge anthems, but helps create a distressing amount of tension early in the album which uncoils and consumes everything in earshot over the subsequent tracks. Spearheaded by Noisey's Brazilian sect, the magazine's American and Italian branches have also joined the mission to help disseminate the premiere of "Plouton" to as much of the globe as possible. The track is joined by an interview with the band on the creation of Ecate and their upcoming international tour plans following the album's release, once again through Neurosis' mighty label cult, Neurot Recordings, in conjunction with the band's own Supernatural Cat Records.

Ghold, volume-clad summoners of low end esotericism and chopped-and-screwed rhythmic ferocity today release the second single from their upcoming album, Of Ruin . "All Eyes Broke" (personal favourite) is the perfect example of Ghold's progressive songwriting prowess. Haunted vocal incantations rise and fall to a whisper, lurching bass lines and cascading drums drop in and out at surprising intervals, all the while, mischievous and unpredictable sounds prevail before the whole song erupts to reach its climatic finale.

The two components of bass and drums are bound together so tight on Of Ruin that they resemble a singular gnarled entity, kneading together groove and melody like putty in the palm of their hands, with explosive results. Intrinsically heavy and elastically supercharged, Ghold create a strain of viscous rock that is as plainly devastating as it is capricious, pushing down the scales in a myriad of manners to achieve an ever heavier outcome. The riffs of the bass approach a murky mysticism, likely to crumble in landslides of overblown fuzz, before snapping in to strict rigidity comparable to what Motörhead would sound like if you isolated the rhythm section. The wealth of ideas presented by Paul Antony and Aleks Wilson on Of Ruin surpass the imaginations of the majority.

The Sludgelord News: GODSPEED YOU! BLACK EMPEROR - ASUNDER, SWEET AND OTHER DISTRESS, NEW FULL LENGTH UPCOMING ON 31 MARCH VIA CONSTELLATION

  Godspeed You! Black Emperor (GYBE) returns with its first single LP-length release since the group's earliest days in 1997-99. Asunder, Sweet And Other Distress clocks in at a succinct 40 minutes and is arguably the most focused and best-sounding recording of the band’s career. Working with sound engineer Greg Norman (Electrical Audio) at studios in North Carolina and Montréal, GYBE slowly and steadily put the new album together through late 2013 and 2014, emerging with a mighty slab of superlative sonics, shot through with all the band’s inimitable signposts and touchstones: huge unison riffage, savage noise/drone, oscillating overtones, guitar vs. string counterpoint, inexorable crescendos and scorched-earth transitions.

  Following Godspeed’s return from a long hiatus at the end of 2010 to begin playing live shows again, and with the hugely acclaimed Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend! release in 2012 marking their first new release in a decade, the group continued to perform regularly on their own headlining tours (and as headliners at many leading festivals), often including a new multi-movement piece in concert over the past couple of years. Known to fans and through live show recordings by the sobriquet “Behemoth”, GYBE has gradually distilled this new work down to a fastidious and uncompromising essence in the studio, with the swing-time swagger of the opening unison riff in “Peasantry or ‘Light! Inside of Light!’” giving way to increasing microtonal divergences and an exhilarating immersion in the harmonic power of massed amplified instruments, before collapsing into some of the most visceral and unalloyed noise/drone the band has yet committed to tape on “Lambs’ Breath” and “Asunder, Sweet”. The album closes with “Piss Crowns Are Trebled”, a 14-minute piece of vintage Godspeed, where ascending and descending guitar and violin melodies intertwine over gut-rattling distorted bass in 3/4 time, segueing into a pummeling four-on-the-floor series of sparkling, soaring crescendos.

  Asunder, Sweet And Other Distress finds Godspeed in top form; a sterling celebration of the band’s awesome dialectic, where composition, emotion and ‘note-choice’ is inextricable from an exacting focus on tone, timbre, resonance and the sheer materiality of sound.

ZU are preparing to release their first new full-length in five years, titled Cortar Todo and due out via Ipecac Recordings on the rapidly approaching release date of March 23rd. The Quietus have revealed the title track, an intensely rhythmic beast that seeps industrial fluid and volatile flames of brass-bending static, and is symptomatic of the roaming, alien sounds of the album.

  For over fifteen years, ZU's modus operandi of straddling and abusing musical genres has resulted in over fifteen unique album releases across labels such as Ipecac, Atavistic and Headz (Japan). Their experimental amalgam of metal, math, no-wave, noise and electronics, led acclaimed composer John Zorn to describe their sound as "a powerful and expressive music that totally blows away what most bands do these days".

  Five years since their last full length on Ipecac, the critically acclaimed Carboniferous, and following a three year hiatus, ZU returned in May 2014 with the release of a brand new EP, Goodnight Civilization (Trost Records) and with a line up change that introduced the mighty Gabe Serbian, best known as the drummer for the legendary Californian band, The Locust.

  Recorded in the countryside near Bologna, Italy, in the summer of 2014, the album features some very special guests including keyboard player Joey Karam (The Locust), Italian guitar maverick Stefano Pilia (who plays regularly with the likes of Mike Watt, David Grubbs and Rokia Traore) and perhaps most unexpectedly, a field recording of an indigenous Shipibo medicine man recorded by Massimo during his travels around the Amazon.
