Live Review: Psycho California, The Observatory, May 15 - 17, (CA)

Looking at the Psycho California line-up for 2015 really looks like a dream come true for any stoner doom fanatic. Three days of pure heavy musical bliss? Who can turn that down!? Naturally, I was eager to see this event go down and Thief did not fail to deliver. As I got to the Observatory in Santa Ana, I could see rockers wearing everything from Saint Vitus to Sleep shirts symbolizing that this music scene was finally making big waves and showing its class on such a grand scale. After checking in and saying hello to the many friends I have made through this music, I got settled to see Radio Moscow first on the main stage. Straight up these guys kick major ass and can get anyone going with their old school style and fantastic punch as a band. The Radio Moscow boys are living proof that the roots of rock n roll are very much alive today. Parker Griggs has an amazing voice that can be compared to some of the greats from back in the day.

After checking out their set I had some interviews to do and finished in time to see the mighty Conan in action. Conan is just sonic Terror. Ferocity is one way I can describe Conan’s music and hearing it live was just as impressive as when i heard it on record. They played “Hawk as Weapon” and it really made my day. Conan gave a sludgetastic delivery(complete with their signature black hoodies), setting a pretty high standard for the rest of the bands that had to follow up their set. From there I checked out Los Angeles locals Ancient Altar who did the LA scene proud. Paired up with some of the biggest names in the scene today these boys held their own and did the local doom scene proud as their set was representative of the quality and class that Los Angeles has to offer. If you are reading this please check out Ancient Altar as soon as possible, their dual vocal attack is something grand! These dudes destroy! (A special shout out to the Ancient Altar boys).

After a break and some interviews it was time for the legendary Bedemon. Bedemon showed everyone that music is from the soul and no matter what time it is, class is forever. It was only 6pm and the building was going nuts. Everyone who witnessed the set took part in music history. For the first time ever….Bedemon live! Wino is simply a lifer in this music scene and his presence and voice are one of a kind. Mr. Geof O’Keefe was incredible to watch on stage as he jammed with the rest of the band and i felt like he was teaching me how to properly play music. You know when they talk about soul and music? I think it’s safe to say these gentlemen have it. The entire band looked like they were having the time of their lives up there. Big props to Thief for making that happen, it was amazing to have witnessed something so epic that I did in fact, shed some tears. As I explained to Pellet (a behind the scenes hero!) that this entire band and performance was like the scene and progress coming full circle. The vanguard of heavy music present and performing showing us youngsters how it is done.  It is as if an artifact from ancient Egypt was just discovered and has given us more to history to analyze and reflect on. Frank, Greg, Geof and Wino, I must thank you all for the experience. ( I did an interview with Geof of Bedemon as well. Stay tuned for that!).

After a stunning performance by Municipal Waste it was time for Seattle’s Bell Witch. The Duo was just stunning. I saw people crying during their performance. Outside or not, nothing can stop this band from sounding great. Material for their latest album was played and it sounded just as it did on record. Always a great thing when bands can replicate what you hear on record live. Bell Witch are masters of their craft. Cough delivered a devastating performance right after which included new music for those of you who cannot get enough Cough in your lives. Cough always blows me away when I see them live and they sound PERFECT. While I was very tired by the time Cough played, it didn’t matter because they woke me back up! (They played “Crippled Wizard”!!!!)

My favorite performance of the whole festival came from Acid Witch. This band just oozes heavy metal and boy, do they have some of the most badass riffs I have heard in a long time. High energy, great sound and great interaction with the crowd proved to be the routine for these headbangers. Playing great songs such as “Witchfynder Finder”, “Stoned to the Grave”, and “Evil” Acid Witch fucking killed it. Despite being the first band on the main stage that day they still kicked ass and set the mood for the rest of the day. If you have the opportunity to see Acid Witch live, you need to get on that ASAP. This band will always be a favorite of mine. (Shout out to Acid Witch. Thank you for the Interview). Pallbearer stepped up to the plate delivering an intimate and emotionally powerful set. This band just grabs your attention and offers some seriously moving music along with that. Bravo to Pallbearer, at this rate these guys will end up in the doom metal hall of fame as they are simply just that good. Saturday was wrapped up by the mighty sonic titan’s Sleep. What can I say? The guys are living legends and are always a fan favorite. At times some issues with sound mixing occurred but despite all that they left everyone happy. They really got things moving quickly opening with the heavy and powerful “Holy Mountain”. Sleep ended Saturday with a bang.

I was very anxious to see Om. Om was like a religious experience and did not move from where I was standing for their entire set. You know that musical high people talk about? Yeah, I felt that during Om. It was that incredible. Everything was on point and the nature of their music is the kind that captivates everyone in the room. Seriously, Om was that fucking awesome. I had always wanted to see Om live and had really high expectations for them. I can safely say that Om lived up to the hype and gave a damn good show. Everything was in perfect harmony during their set. Drum fills, Bass fills, FILLS FOR DAYS. The whole thing was just special. I will never miss out on Om live ever again! Also representing the Los Angeles Doom metal scene were Doomsters Deathkings. Their music is a journey that can be just as beautiful as it is aggressive. Nick has an very powerful voice that you feel in your chest. Epic and devastating. They killed it. During their set everyone was headbanging in approval. Deathkings just sounded amazing and also made Los Angeles doom metal more than proud! Check out their recent split with Rozamov!

The festival was wrapped up with the legendary Pentagram. After speaking with Bobby Liebling for about 40 mins before the set, I was like a kid in a candy store. I wanted to see Bobby out there and just work the crowd. Bobby Liebling and Co. just tore the place down. They never disappoint and with their performance everything came full circle. The vanguard of doom metal was on stage and showing everyone how it is done. They played Last Daze Here and man it was just killer. Bobby Liebling still has it! When he performs it is like a lesson and the way he works the crowd is just world class entertainment! This is how it is done folks! I want to thank Pellet Pelletier for the chance to interview Pentagram and Bedemon. This was simply epic! Bobby Liebling is not just a musician to me, he is a teacher.

I always think to myself, “no way can thief beat the last festival they put on” but they just keep delivering quality experiences that as of now are both legendary and one of a kind. When people look back in the future, Psycho California will be remembered forever. This is forever going to be in the history books of heavy music. Thief. Bravo. You guys did it again!

The Sludgelord and Doomed & Stoned Present: An Interview with Goya at Day of the Shred Fest

A definition of Do it yourself (DIY) is the method of building, modifying, or repairing something without the aid of experts or professionals, the reason I mention this, is that there is an increasing trend for bands to do things themselves, indeed if you have a vision of what you are trying to represent or wanting to achieve and have the means to be able to do it yourself, then invariably you are best placed to do so.

Yes, the financial support of a big label invariably leads to better distribution of your music, which in turn leads to better tours, which means possibly reaching more fans, but ultimately for a fan what DIY represents, is that CD or vinyl or shirt you buy, goes directly to band, who in turn reinvest back into their music.  This is nothing new of course, every band starts this way, but due to the medium of social media, a band can reach so many more people now, then say, 30 years ago.

One such band who personify DIY, is the band Goya, who with the release of their record ‘777’ have steadily became a hot topic within the stoner doom community.  For me, ‘777’ is a future classic in waiting (and this is not just my belief), indeed Goya financed, recorded and distributed the record themselves, and it is a mark of their sheer determination and passion for music, that their hard work is finally starting to pay off with their recent signing to revered boutique label STB Records.

With a forthcoming split with Wounded Giant (review here) and a second full length coming in 2015, make no mistake, by this time next year, one of the big labels will be knocking on their door.  Prior to their appearance at Day of the Shred fest, Frank Heredia hooked up with the band, who gave a full and frank insight into the band and also what we can expect from the band over the next 12 months.

The Sludgelord and Doomed & Stoned are proud to present, the 2nd of our series of interviews from the aforementioned Day of the Shred fest.  So sit back, enjoy and keep it sludgy.

Live Review: Day of the Shred Festival. Santa Ana, California. 01/11/2014

As I woke up in the morning I knew that I was in for a real show today. The first time I would be attending a festival that is similar in fashion to a European metal festival, the bands on this bill being front runners of doom, sludge and stoner.  Travelling with my friend Hugo we were united in our hunger for heavy music, as we made our trip to the observatory in Santa Ana.

Arriving early to the venue, I was treated well by the staff and security and soon enough I was in contact with Jeff Owens from Goya. During our chat I began to notice the bands starting to roll in with vans and trucks filled with gear. Various people had arrived early and were dressed in 1970’s fashion. It seemed like some real dedicated fans were here and it made things better. After another chat with Virginia doomsters, Windhand I headed inside to catch first band I was eager to see.

As I entered the Creeper stage, Southern California’s own Trapped Within Burning Machinery was setting up. Soon enough they began their relentless and heavy sonic assault, the crowd banging their heads in unison and approval. Heavy with both emotion and darkness their set was very special. The band sounded perfect, very tight and when the three guitarists of the band played together in harmony it hit me in a way I had never felt before. Their music is somewhat of an epic journey, the songs seem to have a climax of emotion. According to their front man Zak, most of the material was new and unreleased, so we should be awaiting new record from Trapped.. with some anticipation.  For me, it was my favorite set of the day, an underrated band full of passion.

Next up were. Arizona Stoner Doom band, Goya. I had been waiting for quite a while to see this band live, as they have been making waves online with their revered debut album ‘777’. Having interviewed them earlier in the day I was already excited to see them play, indeed when they began with their track ‘Rites of Hashage’, I was very pleased. Goya is a band that holds a special place in my heart as they influence my own music. Finally ending with ‘Night Creeps’, Goya wrapped up their set and had the crowd going. Everything during their set came together and they did not disappoint. As a fan and reviewer, Goya are killer band, I promptly bought as much merch as I could from their merch table after their set. (I was so excited I forgot to get it signed). A massive shout out to their Bass player who joined the band at short notice for this tour, he played very well and helped me with some issues earlier in the day. If you get the chance to check this band live, make sure you do! (Thanks to Jeff for taking my request)

A few bands and drinks later it was time for Bongripper. Making their first West Coast appearance, the crowd was eager to hear their monolithic doom sound hit the PA. During their set, it felt as if time had slowed down and suddenly it felt hard to move around, feeling every kick from the drums in my chest. Bongripper played the track ‘Satan’ from their modern classic Satan Worshiping Doom album. This track felt even heavier in person than it did on record. Bongripper played an excellent set and I wish for a swift return to California in the future. Shout out to Dennis from Bongripper, we had a funny conversation after the set. (Expect something in the mail you madman!)

Eventually Windhand’s set came around after a rockin’ set from Elder (It is worth noting that Elder sounded incredible, their guitar tone was so clear and when leads were played it sounded perfect. Gear heads would be envious everywhere). Windhand had released their Split with Salems Pot at this show and even played the track from said split ‘Forest Clouds’.  This is the first time I have heard Windhand with Dorthia voice being audible, usually the sound guys bury her voice into the mix, but she sounded incredible this evening. Ending the set with a very emotional finish, Windhand had killed it as they usually do; this band is one of the primary showcase bands of the scene in my opinion. Watching them on stage is somewhat mesmerizing; their blend of heavy music is very emotional and dark. They never disappoint me. (Much love to Garrett and Dorthia, especially Dorthia for being so helpful and nice)

Weedeater followed and Dixie Dave and Co really delivered. After a few funny words from Dave, the band played and pretty much had everyone going. Weedeater is a band who have secured a legendary status, playing the great ‘Hammer handle’  and their cover of ‘Gimme Back My Bullets’, Weedeater destroyed their set and towards the end Dixie Dave destroyed an amplifier which was giving him trouble throughout the set.  It seems that the SVT model Ampeg is quite problematic when used for a long time, not very durable perhaps? Bravo to Weedeater, they really killed it and pleased the crowd.

Red Fang of course need no introduction and straight up brought the party. A band that really has an accessible sound; the boys from Red Fang always get people going and are a headliner wherever they go for that reason. To put it simply they’re a good time band.

Overall this is the best festival I have ever attended. It makes me excited to feel that festivals such as this will be happening in future, because Doom metal is fast cementing its place with authority in today’s heavy metal world. Other sub genres are going to need to play catch up at this rate! Final shout outs to ‘Thief’ for putting this all together, thank you for the invitation and a great festival.

Madrost - Into the Aquatic Sector (Album Review)

Album Type: Full Length
Date Releaed: 23/9/2014
Label: Self Release

‘Into the Aquatic Sector’ CD track listing:

1). The Unknown (01:11)
2). From Beneath the Snow (05:02)
3). Universal Energy (03:13)
4). Operation: Xenomorphic Protocol (04:05)
5). The Oceanic Prelude (00:42)
6). Subterranean Nightmare (03:46)
7). Into the Aquatic Centre (03:59)
8). Depravity (05:05)

The Band:

Tanner Poppitt | Vocals/Guitar
Alejandro Pelaez | Guitar
Richard Orellana | Bass
Cesar Escobar | Drums

Review:

Among the bands in the LA metal scene few work and play harder than DIY band Madrost. They begin their latest record with a nice ambient track that plays to the science fiction aspect of the record, making for a eerie intro, giving you the feeling that evil things lurk where the journey is about to take place. The next track ‘Frozen Beneath the Snow’ starts with some straight up serious heavy riffig and power metal screams, inspired by the likes of Kai Hansen or John Cyriis open up the track. Frontman Tanner Poppitt returns to employ his raspy bark vocal style which fits the music quite well. Different elements of metal appear right from the beginning to the end of this record, blast beats, tremolo picking and thrash inspired riffs are all over the place as the band explores where it can take its sound.

The most immediately noticeable element is the development of style on behalf of the band which has resulted in a mature sound. Their last release ‘Maleficent’, featured a different line up but front man Tanner Poppitt returns and seems to have worked hard with this line up as both live and on record they are making waves.  Drumming overall on the album is fitting and confident, it can be said that the addition of Cesar Escobar behind the kit was an excellent choice for Madrost, his powerful presence and consistency speaks for itself and It seems has found the sweet spot in which his beats demand attention on every track.  Ror me his drumming was impeccable on this record.

The third track ‘Universal Energy’ features straight to the point riffing fury that Madrost listeners will be used to by now, but with an added twist, including a memorable chorus that you may find yourself singing along to. The following track ‘Operation Xenomorphic Protocol’ is my personal favorite on the record, filled with tempo changes and heavy riffs and even harmonies, this track simply just kills. The track is more on the death metal side of things and you will hear no complaints from me, however towards the end of the track I feel the record reaches its climax, a solo delivered by guitarist Alejandro Pelaez comes in, amazingly tasteful and melodic solo, joined in harmony by Frontman Tanner Poppitt's guitar which makes for an epic moment on this record. I found myself hitting rewind at least 7 or 8 times to hear it again over and over again as for that moment everything came together perfectly.

Come out of the solo and you are hit with a very Dark Angel-esque style riff, which is very awesome to hear, followed up with some Death inspired riffs too. ‘The Oceanic Prelude’ follows with a very nice soothing classical style guitar, reminiscent of Lord Belial's work in the past, which serves as an introduction to the next track ‘Subterranean Nightmare’. Again when the band is playing together and is hitting the listener with these bone crushing riffs everything is taken to a higher level of heaviness by the solid and consistent drumming of Cesar Escobar, whose double pedal work is intense and some of the best I have heard in a while from an underground band.

The end of ‘Subterranean Nightmare’ includes some very nice bass fills by Richard Orellana who's on live stage presence is top notch, Madrost brings this same intensity that you hear on record to the stage as well.

Closing out the album withInto the Aquatic Sector’, whose chorus is going to be sticking in your head for some time, it may even have you joining in with the band. The end of the track has a very Death inspired moment that is very progressive and very fitting for the moment, as the next track ‘Depravity’ starts again, with in your face death metal style riffing and blast beats which makes for a solid song to wrap up the album.

Overall ‘Into the Aquatic Sector’ is a very promising and solid album which is more proof that DIY projects are reaching a point where they are just as good as record label funded records which deserves much applause as DIY bands. Madrost is playing shows left and right in the LA metal scene and have made quite a name for themselves. On stage they are killer and will have you headbanging right along with them. Something tells me that we have not heard the best of Madrost yet, which makes me excited for what is to come.  This Line up seems to be one that has plenty of promise and talent and already delivering great material such as this latest release. Madrost have deliveredInto the Aquatic Sector’, who knows where they will take us next? I know I will be eagerly waiting for the answer. If Madrost come to a town near you, be there, you will not be disappointed.

Possessor - Electric Hell (Album Review)

Album Type: Full Length
Date Released: 22/6/2014
Label: Self Released/Bandcamp

‘Electric Hell’ DD track listing:

1). Chasms of Malice (02:55)
2). Invisible Face (03:56)
3). Limb from Limb (03:18)
4). Castle of Bastards (01:45)
5). Strange Summoning (01:48)
6). Heavy Dreams (05:12)
7). Skeletal Form (04:26)
8). Face the Possessor (03:24)
9). Electric Hell (05:25)

Review:

Coming out from the underground of London is a band with plenty of power and riffing ability, did I mention they can riff? Their latest release ‘Electric Hell’ is a true gem to be found for those who seek new bands who are going to satisfy their hunger for more heavy music. Half an hour of bitchin’ ripping heavy metal fury, ‘Electric Hell’ begins with a power intro that will immediately attract the attention of those who enjoy doom metal, because it sets the tone for the rest of the record by letting you know what you are in for right away. They make a statement by delivering a crushing riff and immediately follow it with a Thrashy tempo and vocal style reminiscent of the upcoming Electric Wizard album with an eerie echo effect. A great tone from the guitar work is present, having enough low end to satisfy us doomsters but enough crunch to satisfy and bring the thrash metal feel.

Listening to Possessor feels like a giant bulldozer is ploughing through your speakers at full power with the muddy demonic sound they achieve.  The band rarely gives you room to relax as they are all guns blazing at all times. A very dynamic snare and consistent drumming style gives you plenty of opportunities to bang your head.

A Thrash/Doom metal hybrid is perhaps what we can describe Possessor as. Evoking memories of Acid Witch’s guitar style, as well as very Pantera with some High on Fire thrown in the mix. Highlights on the record are ‘Limb from Limb’, ‘Heavy Dreams’, and ‘Skeletal Form’.

Having found this band from a visit to bandcamp, I can say it feels awesome to find this quality from a band that is still quite underground. This release is one of my favourite releases of the year overall and I will be following Possessor from here on out. Heavy enough for us doom fans, fast enough to attract the Thrashers, Psychedelic enough to please the Stoners! Possessor has made a statement with this record and seem to be a promising band, rock on!

Those of you in the London, UK area should be expecting to see Possessor soon as they plan to bring their "Electric Hell" to a stage near you soon.

Bongripper - Miserable (Album Review)

Album Type: Full Length
Date Released: 7/7/2014
Label: The Great Barrier Records

‘Miserable’ CD/DD/LP track listing:

1). Endless 17:48
2). Descent 18:51
3). Into Ruin 28:25

Review:

Coming off the success of their Doom masterpiece ‘Satan Worshipping Doom’ Chicago’s Bongripper is a heavyweight in doom metal and their latest record further reinforces their place among the heavy.

From the first second to the last, Bongripper’s ‘Miserable’ hits you like a truck and leaves you flattened with its heavy riffage. As the first track begins, I felt like time and space was slowing down, indeed it sets a very dark mood for the rest of the record. Listening and closing my eyes it truly felt like something bad was about to happen and I was anticipating such a thing the entire time. Staying true to their name, Bongripper makes you feel like taking a rip and cracking open a cold one, particularly during a moment in the middle of the first track, where you are given a breather from the band's relentless assault of high gain.  Instead you are taken into a Pink Floyd type feeling that is very pleasing to hear, but on the whole ‘Endless’ is perhaps one of heaviest tracks to date from Bongripper.

The second track, ‘Descent’ features some great riffs, but is different from the typical style Bongripper brings to the table; leading us brilliantly into the powerful track ‘Into Ruin’ spanning a massive 30 minutes in duration, it is truly a journey of pure heavy doom. It is powerful, heavy, consistent and a monolith in itself!

Overall ‘Miserable’ is a great follow up and another heavy, very consistent record. Bongripper matures its sound and production wise they have reached perfection in terms of maximizing the Bongripper experience. In the end Bongripper unleashes a beast of a record and delivers again, further cementing their place as a Stoner Doom Monolith. Fans of ‘Satan Worshiping Doom’ will not be disappointed as the Chicago 4 piece has created another heavy consistent and memorable record.

Choice Cuts: The Sword - Warp Riders (2010)

Years Active: 2003 (2003)–present
Records to date: 4
Genre: doom, stoner, heavy metal
Label: Razor & Tie, Napalm Records

The Band:

  • J. D. Cronise | vocals, guitars
  • Kyle Shutt | guitars
  • Bryan Richie | bass
  • Trivett Wingo | drums, percussion

Review:

As a big fan of The Sword and their great Stoner rock/Doom sound, I was very excited to listen to their album sci fi concept album “Warp Riders” and it sure didn't disappoint.

Beginning the album with a very fast paced track.  “Acheron/Unleashing the Orb” is a track that will get you instantly prepared for the rest of the album as it unleashes its thrash metal influenced speed riffing style. A very solid intro track that gets your blood pumping and jumps right into the next track “Tres Brujas”. An old school heavy metal main riff and a catchy chorus come into play as The Sword deliver using more of its simple but great riffing abilities. This track has a very rock n roll feel to it and mid way the song, the band breaks into a very nice groove that keeps you paying attention to what is going on. ”Tres Brujas” is a highlight track on this album and is one of those that you will want to hear over and over again.

On the whole, Frontman JD Cronise seems to have improved when it comes to his vocal abilities, his vocal has more maturity to it on this record. On “Arrows in the Dark”, we hear that rock n roll like groove again and despite this being a mainstay of their live set list, this song seems to lack the kick ass main riff that the band is so easily capable of.  Followed by “The Chronomancer I: Hubris” the album again has influence from the old rock n roll bands of the 70’s , indeed this track reminds me of the band ‘Mountain’ and their heavy but groovy riffs. It is important to note that this album lyrically has some very nice work. I can imagine the epic journey The Sword aims to describe though their music.

The next track on the album is my personal favorite, “Lawless Lands” which has a great main riff and groove that reminds me of ZZ Top. A very great track with some solid riffs that are reminiscent of the 70’s as well as the lead style of the great Billy Gibbons

The rest of the album is very consistent with another very fast thrash metal influenced track, “Astraea’s Dream”, and “Night City” has a very catchy main riff, complete with a very Black Sabbath esque moment towards the end. Overall the album is very solid, whilst not a breakthrough for The Sword, I can safely say you should add to the collection.  A solid album that delivers the type of sound we love to hear from The Sword.
