The Review:

Post-metal is a confused term that gets thrown around casually far too often. Sarin’s “Darker Lakes” is a call back to the works of early Hydra Head Records bands, while at the same time pushing that sound father than previously imagined.

Sarin’s follow up to their 2015 LP “Burial Dreams” showcases them expanding beyond the realms of post-metal. The amount of nuance and textural elements brought into the music makes it impossible to pin the band down to a single sub-genre. To do so would be an injustice. All at the same time, Sarin has created their most uplifting and yet heaviest record to date.

From the positive vibes of tracks like “Amber Guide” and “Ember Circling Downwards”, to the bleak nature of “Bloom” and “Ocean Burns”, this album is meant to be treated like a complete classical movement. The album transition sseamlessly from one track to the next that playing it out of order would do the music an disservice. The album can perfectly be summarized by the albums closing track; “Low Moon”. In essence, Sarin has created an emotionally complicated record with many peaks and valleys. If you strive for something that is truly genre defying, this record is a must.
