Review:

I've always admired The Tragedy We Live In. A band that played by its own rules and who have sadly called it a day after 3 albums in 2 years. Their latest album ‘Tragedie’ sees the band playing some of their loudest, angriest and most fucked-up material to date. The band play a dark and twisted style of Sludge Metal, Doom Metal, Ambient, Noise and Post-Rock.

It may not be the most polished of sounds but at least the band have their own identity. This album will appeal to fans of Neurosis, ISIS and even Author & Punisher as The Tragedy We Live In sound ventures from Sludge, Post-Metal, Industrial, Doom and Drone. The record can be very overwhelming at times, especially on the opening two tracks ‘Afscheid’ and ‘T'dal’ with the band packing as many sounds and noises as they can with bleak pissed off vocals to match.

Nothing much has changed from their last superb album ‘Live Fast, Live Fast, Live Fast’, with ‘Tragedie’ the same distorted experimental noises and chaotic riffs are played with nightmarish affect and despite a very disjointed feel, it is volatile affair but just plain addictive.  The instrumental work is superb as always and with a relatively short running time, overall ‘Tragedie’ is a fucking great experience.

In summation The Tragedy We Live In were one of the more exciting bands I've had the pleasure to promote and interview over the years and I wish the guys all the best in their new musical endeavours. Acting as their final epitaph ‘Tragedie’ is an excellent album in which to close this chapter in their musical journey and one you should most definitely check out.

Founded in 2011, Coffinfish is still evolving, growing, and widening the scope of musical inspirations. Although staying within the scope of “weird fiction”, they’re not limited to one particular theme. Onirism, human mind, oceans, and mountains. I Am Providence is a follow‐up to the 2013 EP called Staring at the Abyss and is a huge step forward both musically and lyrically.

Review:

Coffinfish is an Experimental Sludge/Post-Metal band that takes influence from ISIS, Neurosis and Cult Of Luna. Their debut album – I Am Providence – more than establish Coffinfish to give a damn about in the Sludge/Post-Metal world as their take on Sludge/Post-Metal has intelligence and brawn to match. Shades of Post-Rock are used throughout the album with the heavier Sludge/Post-Metal brutality holding the destructive mood altogether.

Opening track – Zadok Allan – has a slight Pelican influence but Coffinfish offer a more brooding and darker style that Pelican haven't been able to match for their last few releases. Coffinfish aren't an instrumental post-metal band but they prove they can offer a different take on instrumental post-metal if they ever decide to go down that route in the future. A great track to open the album with.

Second track – The Expedition – sees the real Coffinfish arrive with slabs of heavy pounding sludge metal riffs and shattering vocals to match. The band offer a bleak insight to the realm of Atmospheric Sludge. It's good to see a band play to their influences but still showing the world they break through on their own terms and vision. And that's what Coffinfish have achieved here. A stunning bleak vision against a pissed-off hardcore/sludge backdrop that only adds to the angry and volatile atmosphere that the band have created. Coffinfish add subtle hints of ambient post-rock to soothe your senses but this is a false sense of security as the band unleash their true identity and musical vision for everyone to witness.

Coffinfish create epic volatile moods of nature than songs as each song feels like the whole world is coming to an end and there is nothing that we can do about but just watch the end of the world. With scientists having just announced that the world is in the midst of a Sixth Mass Extinction then Coffinfish have created the perfect album to play out as the soundtrack to the end of the world. It's a bleak and unflinching vision that you can't help but witness.

Third track Watchers opens up with a lengthy post-rock/post-metal instrumental riff that lasts for days before shades of Ambient Noises and sounds pile on the misery until Lobo's vocals kick in and pile on the misery. It's possibly the darkest track on the album and one that will leave you feeling slightly depressed by it all. This is one of the most gruelling and punishing songs I've listened to this year but it's still a powerful ride I can't recommend highly enough.

The remaining two tracks on the album – Against Life and Staring At The Abyss – carries on the gruelling Sludge/Post-Metal riffage as Coffinfish leave no stone unturned leaving your life slightly more depressing but it's one dark and unforgettable ride that will appeal to long-time fans of ISIS and Neurosis. The instrumental work is stunning throughout the album. Coffinfish definitely earn their rising reputation within the Sludge/Post-metal scene.

Do yourself a favour and hunt this album down as it's a superb debut album. Coffinfish deserve your attention and more. This album is a powerful ride into the unknown. Lets see what future twisted works of art that Coffinfish will come up for us in the future. Spellbinding and brilliant. End Of.

Review:

Black Urn are a Blackened Sludge/Doom/Grind Band that I recently stumbled across. They intrigued me right from the very start as their debut S/T EP is almost 30 minutes of blackened sludge metal encrusted with Doom, Blues and a splattering of Grind. The vocals are pitch black and feel they were forged in hell though the riffs feel they were created in the Holiest of Churches – The Church of BLACK SABBATH.

Opening track – Teat of The Baphomet – is a strange hybrid of Sabbath based down-tempo riffs and sinister death based growls. This is music that Satan himself will be listening to over and over again. And it's a fucking bruising encounter that lasts 12 minutes or so. This song has slow-paced despairing riffs with enough power to drive you to madness and it's a vibe you're more than truly grateful for. It has a depressing blues vibe as Black Urn wisely stay in the darkness and make you feel part of this violent world.

Black Urn then change into grindcore homicidal maniacs with the next few tracks as second track – Four Cornered Room – is a 28 second blast of intense fast paced grindcore beats. Before the third track – Black Urn – slightly longer splices grindcore violent riffs with down-tempo riffs from the opening track for an intriguing style of Doom/Grind

vibes.

Fourth track – Empty Handed Lord – is back to the heavier rhythms of the opening song as Black Urn have more time to play and impress you with. The track has some superb fast-paced riffs towards the end of the song. Lead vocalist – John – is impressive once again channelling all that pissed off fury. Black Urn return to epic territory with the stand-out song from the EP – Taxidermis – this is more of a companion piece to Teat of The Baphomet. As it carries on the same demonic style of Doom/Blues/Sludge/Grind worship to test your patience with.

Finally but by no means least is – Spore Huffer – that closes the EP on a mighty depressing high. This is a very bass heavy affair with pounding riffs adding real substance to the atmosphere. Black Urn have created a stunning, dark and depressing EP for all you doom and gloom maniacs to check out. Check it out. If you're feeling brave enough!!!

Allfather: bringing sludge metal/hardcore aggression from the black heart of the Medway Delta.

Review:

Allfather's debut EP – No Gods. No Masters. - feels like a statement of intent than an EP. Allfather play pissed off Hardcore/Sludge Metal with a heavy aggressive outlook on life. It's bleak, it's mean, it's loud and Allfather are pissed off at everyone in the world.

The EP only lasts for 11 minutes or so. Thought that's enough time to show you what Allfather can do. The songs carry the familiar style of hardcore breakdown grooves and sludge metal riffs but it's the message that Allfather carry out that make this such a fascinating EP to listen to. These guys are from the UK and the political atmosphere is very bleak to say the least. Allfather I feel, have managed to capture the nations mood with the UK political system especially on Post-Austerity Blues. And that makes them a very dangerous band to listen to.

Opening track – The Great Destroyer – is a perfect example on how to open the EP with. A strong message of individuality against the ruling masses trying to keep people under control who think differently to themselves. Hard-hitting stuff with brutal riffs to match.

Do yourself a favour and check this out now as Allfather are onto something here. Some of the production on the EP is very punk based but it matches the mood that Allfather are trying to create here. I want to see what Allfather can do with a longer EP or full length record as 11 minutes is not enough for a band such as this. I will definitely be keeping an eye on these guys. Bob and Nick had a band called Breechloader, they found Les. Together the sound evolved and has become magnificent, being the shit hawks that we are it was only right to change the name.

Review:

The Magnificent Shithawks of the Greater Northern Americas released their 4 song debut EP The Monumental Misadventures of Skeeter Jennings…in LOVE, back in October of 2014. Considering the fact that they are relatively new on the metal scene in Philadelphia, it’s not surprising that a gem like this like managed to slip through the cracks. The power trio comprised of guitarist Nick Macklin, bassist Les Schultz, and drummer Bob Warner blend various styles and genres into an intense, aggressive, and utterly unique brand of doom metal.

Nick and Les split the vocal duties on the EP. The dichotomy in their styles of singing is a perfect contrast in how the music evolves throughout the EP. The Shithawks, start out with “Kill the Rat,” which is an immediate punch to the face followed by a swift kick to the balls. “Covenant,” is the immediate follow up and features a Motorhead-esque attitude and construction and drops an impressive tempo change as part of the bridge. Probably the best song of the EP, “Space Ghost,” was constructed originally as a throwaway song. “Space Ghost was something I wrote to practice singing and playing,” said bassist Les. It is reminiscent of an early Matt Pike composition where a traditional blues structure is built, broken down, rearranged, and drowned in distortion and fuzz. A climatic end to the EP features an homage to the locally based show, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, with the song “Dayman.” The song is a vicious pounding of hammers into the ear of the listener to permanently affix them into slowly head banging.

While the EP is extremely good, it is not without its faults. Most notably the gang vocals in certain areas. “If we could go back and do it again, I wouldn’t do any group vocals,” said Les, “I think we just wanted to try too much too soon.” I believe that the screaming and yelling of Les and Nick should stand alone in adding character and depth to the songs so because of the strange quality to their voices. Another issue I have with the EP is that while the songs over all, are very good, it is extremely short. The total run time is about 12 minutes, which in the Doom Metal community, could often times be one song or just the introduction in bands like Ennoea’s case. It is a solid foundation for a scrappy upstart band to build upon. If they bring half as much energy and twice the preparation time, their next release may make some serious noise.

The Monumental Misadventures of Skeeter Jennings…in LOVE has an endearing and lasting quality because of the raw and uncontainable power it brings to the table. It is also probably the greatest study of the various stylistic backgrounds each member comes from. The blues guitar of Nick, scale surfing bass lines of Les, and speedy thumping of Bob. If you are the type to comb through Bandcamp for affordable and seldom recognized recordings, this EP is right in your wheel house. It might be the first you’re hearing of The Magnificent Shithawks of the Greater Northern Americas, but I guarantee it won’t be the last thing you hear from them.

7.5 out of 10. Very good, very heavy, but short run time.

Review:

Out Of Space are a strange hybrid of sounds featuring Space, Grunge, Stoner and Fuzz for one highly charged and hugely entertaining debut EP. Invaders will invade your mind with it's fuzzy riffs and dirty desert rock grooves. Opening track – Bloody Road – is a hard rocking number packed full of intricate progressive riffs which I didn't expect at all. Throw in high amounts of grungy fuzz and Out Of Space are onto a winner here. Nicolas vocals have a slight punk vibe and it's cool to hear his true gruff vocal style of delivery. No studio wizardry here. Just good old fashioned music the way its' meant to be played.

Second track – Lined Coin – is a more grungier affair with a stripped back approach but you can still hear the Stoner and Fuzz elements of the bands music. It even has a psychedelic trippy vibe especially with the guitars. I like how the band keep the sound and atmosphere very lo-fi as it gives a real authenticity to their music. Though you will be too busy enjoy the spacey riffs that Out Of Space have created here. Lined Coin is one of the EP's standout tracks. Definitely worth a few repeat listens or two...

Third Track – Psycho Jake – opens with a slow-paced slightly creepy trippy riff with the band adding different noises with each passing second. When the song finally kicks into life you're transported back into Out Of Space's world where the riffs and vocals combine for another fantastic fuzzy space rock encounter. Out Of Space add a dash of sonic experimentation to the mix as Psycho Jake contains a few glitchy ambient moments spliced with the stoner riffs. It works brilliantly well as it gives Psycho Jake a slight mean spirited vibe.

Fourth Track – Riot – is back to normal lo-fi dirty punk good old fashioned Stoner Rock business. This is another mean and moody track to show Out Of Space have many different sides to them. Though they do know how to write a lean and mean Stoner/Hard Rock track packed with guts and attitude to match. The vocals may falter here and then but you can't deny how good the music actually is.

Last but by no means least is the almost 16 minute monster by the name of – Desert In Bloom – a trippy psychedelic and gigantic exercise in noise and riffs. Out Of Space throw everything at you here: Stoner, Fuzz, Psych, Grunge, Prog Rock and lashes of SPACEY riffs. It may start off very quiet and at a slow pace but give it time as you ain't heard nothing yet. When Out Of Space unleash the heavy carnage then all hell breaks loose. Sounds and rhythms combine for one epic battle. Just sit back and enjoy the ride. This is definitely the best track on the EP. Fantastic stuff!!!

Invaders is a thrilling and action packed EP that I can't recommend highly enough. Excellent stuff. You can buy Invaders on BandCamp Buy Now Download. Awesome. End Of.

Hopefully even with Mark E Smith on bongos it will sound like WALL.

Review:

Doom/Sludge/Pop Rockers – WALL – are back with a blistering new EP – Wastelands/Warfields. And it's a stunning array of high octane Sugary Pop Coated Doom/Sludge Metal riffs. I'm a huge fan of these guys who made a big impression on me back in 2013 with their S/T release.

If you're a fan of FLOOR and Torche then WALL is the band for you. This EP sees WALL in loud volatile mood with the band playing fast-paced Sludge/Doom Pop music. Opening track – Wastelands – has bone-crunching and heavy down-tuned guitars with lead vocalist – Sascha – providing sublime vocals packed full of passion and demented fun especially towards the end when the mood takes a sinister turn.

Second track – Warfields is classic WALL through and through. Heavy melodies with a great singalong chorus though with a slight Punk-Rock swagger. WALL return to the normal sound of down-tuned sludgy guitars with Sascha once again on fine form singing his heart out. WALL have offered a brief glimpse of their new sound on the EP and if this is the way WALL are going on their next album, then WALL may have something special for us to experience.

Review

London's Groan may have produced one of the best EP titles of all time. It’s a name so ridiculous yet so inventive that one would absolutely never tire of reading it. Surely such majestic titling will have equally as grandiose chops to back it up?

The four tracks on offer feature a bevy of ‘old school’, blues infused riffs. ‘Run Out Of Fucks’ kicks things off as they mean to go on, pounding drums and low, brooding bass being joined by a big old wall of guitar feedback. Mazzereth’s vocals kick in and goddamn, they really wail, in a similar vein to 70’s heroes like Bruce Dickinson, soaring, almost operatic highs. There’s a pleasantly rolling tempo, then a breakdown with some epically blazing guitar work, before the song fades into weirdness.

‘Witchfinder General Finder’ features some excellently tight instrumentation amongst the bluesy 70’s worshipping licks. Leigh Jones’s bassline moves organically, and Zel Kaute’s drums are intuitive and feature a lot of interesting movement, especially during the drum solo break that’s intercut by big, statement chords. There’s another guitar solo that edges close to spacy, psychedelic territory, in a good way. ‘March Of The Druids’ is arguably the least realised, not having much in the way of stand out personality compared to the other tracks. Although it’s ballsy and beefy, it could probably use a little more cowbell.

But Groan definitely save the best for last, in the shape of ‘Buried In Leather’. The sleazy main riff slaps you across the face with a cow-hide glove, and would definitely induce some dipping-headbanging live. The track ups the ante into a driving, breakneck riff that carries the song to its end. When Mazzereth asserts “heavy metal thunder/it’s the only way” you can’t help but be convinced as things finish with a drum freakout and plenty of cymbals.

You can pick up ‘Highrospliffics’ for free via Groan’s BandCamp, but for riffs of this quality, put your hand in your pocket.

Open Wide, The Sky are self proclaimed – Progressive Space Metal Band. Interesting description as their music does fall under a lot of different categories. Progressive Metal, Sludge Metal, Jazz, Hard Rock and Space Rock. If that feels a lot of different genres to take in then I suppose it is but the band make this work in their favour. They play extremely fast when the time calls for it.

Parts Mastodon, Opeth and Between The Buried and Me – their bio briefly states and it's a very good description. Open Wide, The Sky is probably a band that won't appeal to everyone as their music can be very hard to listen to at times. Their latest release - Live @ JingleBalls Dec 20th, 2014 – is a live album no less. It's a challenging, frustrating and exciting album to listen to as Open Wide, The Sky venture off into 100 different musical directions and still sound so different to everyone else.

I wish I knew about these guys earlier as I'm became such a fan of their music within a short space of time. They are a very exciting prospect indeed if you dig Progressive Metal. My advice – Check them out as Open Wide, The Sky are definitely worth your time. All their music is available on BandCamp Buy Now. Their 2012 debut album – Monolith – is a fucking blast from start to finish. So you have no excuse!!!

Archelon - I (EP Review)

Archelon formed in Sheffield UK in August 2013 when Drummer TJ and Guitarist Craig who had been playing together for some time recruited Adam to play Bass and complete the line-up of their progressive Sludge metal band.

Fusing thier love of such bands as Mastodon, ISIS, Neurosis, Pelican, Russian Circles and many others. Archelon sound like a shifting techtonic mass bludgeoning everything in its path with the raw power of a glacier carving valleys from mountains. Their sound is slow, raw, agressive, groove driven and undeniably heavy.

Review:

Archelon another band that a few of my friends have recommended me to check out and here I am finally checking this great band out. If you're a fan of the bands mentioned in their bio then you should seriously check out Archelon as their debut EP – I – is a damn good indication that this band is definitely worth your time.

Opening track – Gaia – is 3:27 minute blast of Progressive Sludge Riffs with a touch of Ambient Noise thrown in for goo d measure. The vocals are reminiscent of early ISIS/Neurosis with traces of hardcore running through them. It's a shame the song isn't on for a tiny bit longer as it could of done with a further minute or so for the heavy riffs to do more damage. Though the Ambient sounds ends the song superbly well.

Second track – Blood On The Sabre – is pure Progressive Sludge/Post-Metal territory that will offer a few decent heavy thrills amongst the Sludge/Post-Metal crowd. It starts rather quietly before the loud riffs start to appear near the 3^rd minute. The vocals are impressive yet again as they bring an air of intelligence and a hint of anger and fury to give Archelon's overall sound a more primal feel.

The final track – Faint Young Sun – has a more experimental and noisy vibe compared to the other tracks. As Archelon turn the atmosphere into a sombre and cold violent place where fear and oppression is all around you. The vocals have a more disturbing feel to them as Archelon leave you feeling in a depressive state. The riffs are played at a slow pace that gives the band plenty of room to explore and create some sombre Post-Rock ambient style music. Though the heavier Sludge/Post-Metal riffs aren't too far behind.

Archelon have created a stunning debut EP and I recommend you check it out if you want a Post-Metal release that will make you coming back for more punishment. Then this is the release for you. I is available to buy on BandCamp Buy Now Download.

HOOF is a three piece doom band from Fairmont, WV.

Review:

HOOF is the type of band that I love promoting on Sludgelord. A band that comes along and literally impresses me in a big way with their heavy riffs that soon get under your skin. HOOF deal in heavy pounding Doom/Sludge Metal riffs that harks back to the early days of High On Fire with an ode to Black Sabbath here and there.

Their debut EP – Seraph Of Saturn – is a strange and very dark EP as it ventures from fast-paced riffs to the more strange experimental occult overtones of sublime 3^rd track – Forbidden Pact. Though opening track – Black Drug – will have you fast-paced sludge metal junkies on edge with it's style of blistering style of angry riffs and superb vocals to match. Seraph Of Saturn is an EP you need to play very LOUD to get the full effect.

Fourth track – Putrid Affair – carries on the heavier carnage from opening track – Black Drug – but gives it a more doom and gloom makeover that sees HOOF become demented murderous mad-men of the riff. Embrace this with open arms if you dare. Definitely the EP's standout track as the band even include a trippy psychedelic occult rock sound near the middle of the song.

This is an outstanding debut EP from HOOF as it's contains a ton of great ideas that one listen to the EP is never enough. If you're a fan of 70s style Classic Doom Metal, Occult Rock and modern day Sludge/Stoner Metal then Seraph Of Saturn is the EP for you.
