Review

It was my 23rd birthday three weeks ago. Following a night of guzzling sticky craft beers and staring longingly at a bottle of Kraken rum, I slithered my way into the front seat of the taxi that would be taking me home. Now, while my recollection of these events are blurred and distorted, I do remember the elderly taxi driver and I entered into a conversation about music. Tommy, we’ll call him, loves his Trad music. He’s also been known to crank out the Thin Lizzy when the wife isn’t home, so he told me, the cheeky bastard. Anyway, our journey is brief, but we seem to cover quite a bit of ground in our musical discussion, a discussion that came to an abrupt end when he glanced at my t-shirt and guessed that I enjoy listening to “bad lad music”.

Bad lad music.

Dublin’s four-piece Sludge Hydra, Black Spring, are bad lad music. Though only forming this year, you could easily mistake them for veteran sewer dwellers and amplifier pagans. We are currently living in an age where bands are starting to actually refer to themselves as Sludge, the term itself has become a fashion accessory for some of those bands. For Black Spring, from where I’m standing, the term Sludge is either being used as an L-plate for the moment, or the band are dead set on reopening the sarcophagus of “bad lad music” and letting the poisonous fumes released from it kill the entire crew.

Like a Saturday morning hangover, Black Spring come at you suddenly. There’s no kissing, no foreplay, and certainly no breakfast in bed. Often compared to Nottingham’s Moloch, Black Spring deliver the kind of music that wipes its snots (boogers, for my American friends) on its sleeves, wears its hoodie up, and is constantly looking to score a drug that will turn it into a giant tumor within the space of ten minutes.

With this first demo, Black Spring allows us to peek inside of their world. Their sound is like that of a wall stripped of its paper, back to basics! And because we are the generation that refers incessantly to Sludge, it’s very hard to find new bands that truly encapsulate the sound that comes to mind when it is mentioned. Black Spring have no such problem with regards to definition; they are simply Sludge, they are simply ugly, and they are simple. The music of Black Spring is certainly not an attempt to reinvent the wheel, dare I say it; Black Spring are probably more concerned with breaking the wheel . There may not be anything new on this record, but why should that be a problem? There are far too many ‘Sludge’ bands fiddling around with synthesizers and tambourines, it’s always good to hear something young with the attitude of the old.

Guitars that cough wildly through a rough Southern drawl, drums that send sinister vibrations through the floor. and distressing vocals to wake you up from your Sabbath induced slumber. Black Spring might not be a revelation, but they most certainly are one of the most poisonous, knuckle-dragging bands in Ireland right now.

I fell out of the taxi that night, holding up a fiver to the driver as if I were about to give him his communion wafer, I stumbled around the garden for half an hour and ended up falling asleep in a car.

Bad lad music. Yeah, that’s about right.

Bio

Alchemy can be defined as a seemingly magical process of transformation, creation, or combination. In the vast frozen fortress that is Canada, Monobrow are true riff wizards of alchemy. This mammoth trio is set to release their third album in the spring of 2014. Not unlike a wizard’s spell book, Big Sky, Black Horse is filled with mind altering, time shifting casts of pure magic. Staying with their constant mix of tempo change, groove, and all-out rhythm madness, Monobrow continue to progress with each outing, once again making waves in the sea that is the stoner/doom genre.

Sharing the stage with Blizaro, Witch Mountain, KEN Mode, Iron Man, and Blood Ceremony, to name a few, Monobrow continue to scorch their mark wherever they perform. Apparently, one recent performance may have even summoned spacecraft from another realm, where apparent abductions took place. This amount of riff wizardry can make even the strongest mind see the unimaginable. Do yourself a favor and see this band as often as possible.

Riff wizards from Canada, who from within their frozen fortress, forge some of the finest stoner psych-rock. Beware the controlling powers of their soaring guitar solos, melodic groove, and dynamic arrangements, for even you will have no choice but to pledge allegiance to these true wizards of rock alchemy – Monobrow.

Band Members

Brian Ahopelto, Paul Slater, Sam Beydoun.

Review:

Psychedelic Instrumental Stoner Rockers - Monobrow – return with their eagerly awaited 3rd album – Big Sky, Black Horse. Another winning entry from this highly regarded band whose style of Psych based Instrumental Rock has won them a loyal fan base within Stoner Rock community.

The album sees the band explore into progressive rock territory as their sound has a classic progressive rock feel to it. It shows the bands have taken a different step with their music. Opening Track – Cicada – starts with a dreamy and hazy Stoner riff before the band start adding progressive rock vibes with sublime drumming coming to the forefront of everything. Monobrow match modern Stoner Rock grooves with 70s style Progressive Rock undertones to give this album the perfect start. Plus it’s a wildly hypnotic psychedelic ride that we have came to admire from Monobrow.

The album kicks into overdrive with the 8:26 minute epic – These Mountains Don’t Want Us Here – which sees the band lay down some of the heaviest riffs of their career. It is a thundering tale of Humanity against Nature. A topical issue no matter what timeframe you match the music against. It has a lush based Stoner/Jazzy influence going on when the band play some epic Jam-based riffs.

You are probably thinking does the world need another Instrumental Stoner Rock band. Well on this evidence. All I can say on this evidence and two tracks into this excellent album. Yeah We Do!!! – As Monobrow have created their finest album to date. It instantly draws you in with the band on fine form through out. The instrumental work is flawless but it truly comes alive when the band throws caution to the wind and plays their jam-based riffs, which they have become known for. Fans of Earthless are going to be in Stoner Rock heaven. There is no escaping the huge and heavy vibes that Monobrow have on the remainder for the album.

Monobrow add elements of Space Rock and Doom Metal on Ancient Arctic Wanderer and Old Man Mouthbreather. You can tell the band have put some crazy as heck imagination and effort into the song-titles as much as the music themselves. It is a truly hypnotic combination that will hopefully propel Monobrow to the forefront of Instrumental Stoner Rock as they are one of the best bands the scene has to offer.

The album is brilliantly played from start to finish and the production work is just flawless. The sound is very atmospheric as you can hear every note played with crunching conviction. Big Sky, Black Horse is a powerful, trippy and cosmic tale of spacey riffs that is a strong contender for one of the best Instrumental Stoner Rock Albums of 2014. It is seriously that good.

Excellent. End Of.

Big Sky, Black Horse  is now available to download on BandCamp Buy Now Download. Vinyl will be available to buy on CD/DD/Vinyl from July 2014. Thanks to the band for sending me a promo to review.

Review:

UK Post-Metal collective – LANDS – finally come of age with their brutal and intense debut album – Misanthropy. It's a pummelling 46 minute riffs that will leave you in an emotional state. As Lands combine Post-Hardcore, Sludge, Post-Rock, Ambient and Post-Metal volatile moments of brutality with sheer poetic moments of beauty that will shake you to the core.

This is a band who go straight for the kill as opening track – Without Hope or Encouragement – portrays a band disenchanted with modern day life and it shows with their heavy as hell onslaught of violently paced riffs that proves Lands have a lot to say.

You may hear musical influences diverse as Rosetta, Devil Sold His Soul, The Ocean and even MONO but Misanthropy stands on it's own merits showcasing a band with their own style which proves them as one of the finest Post-Metal bands in the UK along with recent Sludgelord faves - TELEPATHY.

Tracks such as Set Sail and Never Look Back, Envy and Hell Is Other People show a band that cares what the listener thinks as Lands ask some thought provoking questions. They may not give you the answer you're looking for but you can't deny how seriously powerful this album is.

The album has the right amount of loud as hell post-metal riffs and post-rock ambient beats for you to catch your breath but you know like any good Post-Metal band that sonic warfare is just around the corner. Lead Vocalist – Alex – ventures between clean melodic vocals and more angry as hell guttural screams when the time calls for it. He is one highly passionate vocalist who knows how to command an audience.

Misanthropy is a thunderous debut album from these highly respected post-metallers. It's expertly played and produced by all involved. It's loud as hell and it will give your speakers an intense audio workout. You have been warned.

An excellent debut album that you should all check out now. You won't be sorry. Misanthropy is available on BandCamp Buy Now Download.

Outwailed - Observant - Album Review

Observant cover art

Album Type:Album
Date Released: January 9th 2014
Label: Self Released

Observant - track listing:

1 Atonement 07:42
2 Ephemeral 07:53
3 Circle 06:53
4 Downfall 09:28
5 Obliteration 07:29

Bio:

Outwailed is a collective of musicians, based in Tampere, Finland. Post-metal/sludge/doom. Independent/DIY.

Review:

Outwailed released their debut album – Observant – earlier this year and it's only now that I have had the chance to check it out. As they impressed the hell out of me back in Sept 2012 when I featured their debut EP – Black Earth.

What can I say about Observant – Well it's a fucking brilliant piece of intense and intelligent Sludge/Post-Metal riffs that will leave you in a daze for a very long time to come. If you're a fan of ISIS, Neurosis and Cult Of Luna then you need to check this album out now. As Outwailed play the same sort of emotionally charged music that only Post-Metal can deliver.

First track – Atonement – is a slow paced intelligent offering that features some finely played Sludge/Post-Metal riffs mixed with elements of ambient based Post-Rock passages which gives this track a delicate edge. The vocals may not deviate from other Sludge/Post-Metal bands but who the fuck cares when they are good as this.

Outwailed have upped their game on this album since their debut EP – Black Earth. As the album holds many more moments of Sludge/Post-Metal brilliance to admire here. You will lose yourself in tracks such as Ephemeral and Circle. Two of the albums best tracks which shows you why Outwailed are becoming highly thought of within the Sludge/Post-Metal scene.

Observant is an emotionally charged monster of an album that I haven't stopped listening to for the last few weeks or so. If you need more evidence to check this album out then listen to the two final slabs of Sludge/Post-Metal carnage that is Downfall and Obliteration. 18 minutes that features some of the finest post-metal riffs you will hear this year and one that will leave you an emotional wreck.

Outwailed have written a living and breathing entity that demands your time and respect. Outwailed have delivered the perfect balance between light and darkness. The Post-Rock element of the album soothes you during the quiet moments but when things need to become violent and downright nasty then the louder and epic Post-Metal riffs will take over your soul.

Take my advice – Headover to BandCamp and download this album on Buy Now Download. Donate if you can. This is a brilliant album. End Of.

TARPAN - Legend EP

Tarpan - Legend EP cover art

Album Type: EP
Date Released: March 25th 2014
Label: Self Released

Legend EP - track listing:

1.Legend 05:49
2.Lost Paradise 08:24

Review:

I can't find much info about TARPAN. But they are an incredible band you need to check out as they have released a truly stunning début EP – Legend. Two tracks running for about 15 mins or so. But what a brilliant ride this is. Heavy Sludge Metal riffs with a bit of Groove Metal thrown in.

Opening Track – Legend – starts off with a scary and creepy organ intro before the intense Sludge Metal riffs kick in and wait another minute or so to check out for a brilliant psychedelic riff which comes out of nowhere. The vocals are intense from the start as they venture from Sludge based growls to grizzled clean vocals with relevant ease.

TARPAN have a dangerous edge to their music. This isn't a band you can fuck with as the riffs are killer. The EP's main selling point is the epic 8:24 minute track – Lost Paradise – which starts off really slowly before TARPAN say FUCK THIS and unleash hell on earth.

This is intense!!! - Strap yourselves in as your in for a wild ride of brutal Sludge Metal riffs. Yeah I loved this EP. It shows a band with their own style of Sludge Metal music that is one of the heaviest débuts I have heard this year. As it plays out like the bastard offspring of PANTERA, High On Fire and Mastodon. If that doesn't get you interested I don't know what will as you're seriously missing out.

Take my word for it. Headover to BandCamp and download this now. It's available for Buy Now Download. You're going to love this like I did.

Absolutely brilliant. End Of.

Lightsabres - DEMONS - Album Review

Demons cover art

Album Type:Album
Date Released: Nov 13th 2013
Label: Self Released

Demons - track listing:

1.Fangs 00:58
2.Black Hash 02:19
3.Eyez 01:46
4.Fly Like A Bird 02:11
5.Red Light 01:51
6.Teeth 00:41
7.Born To Die 02:14
8.Caesar 02:10
9.Demons 04:48

Bio:

One-man band from Luleå, Sweden, playing dark psychedelic stoner punk infused with post-rock and doom. The more fucked up the better. I like backwards guitars and Glenn Danzig, but not necessarily at the same time.

Review:

Now I am going to say how the fuck did I miss this excellent album by the insane one-man genius that calls him Lightsabres as his debut album – Demons – is one crazy psychedelic stoner punk ride you won't easily forget.

I am a huge fan of the one-man band scene thanks to Sludge/Post-metal artists such as Deterior, Cloudkicker and Diamenson X. But I have to say that Lightsabres is probably the most creative One-Man Band that I have came across as this guy includes a lot of genres on his debut album. Stoner Rock, Punk Rock, Grunge, Alt Rock and Post Rock.

Demons feels like the bastard offspring of QOTSA meets The Ramones. It has a manic energy that you won't find in many albums and it has a brilliant schizophrenic feel to it. Tracks such as Black Hash, Eyez, Born To Die and Red Light have a dangerous vibe around them and it plays out like a crazy fucked up party that you never want to leave.

The album can be quite dark at times and I suppose that is the point of the album. To show that life can be hopeful and rather depressing at times but Lightsabres has created the perfect balance of hard-rocking riffs with delicate post-rock vibes on the beautifully played – Teeth. Before Lightsabres returns to the darkness of Born To Die.

If you want something dangerous in the realm of Stoner Rock then Demons is the album for you. It's a thrilling and hard-rocking ride from start to finish.

It's available on BandCamp Buy Now Download though you can buy the album on Cassette and Vinyl as well.

Brilliant and Highly Recommended.

Review:

Now I am going to let the press bio from Witch Hunter Records/Dead Chemist Records do all of the talking of this excellent and brutally heavy split 7” single as it will tell you all you need to know about two of the UK's loudest and heaviest bands you all need to check out now.

Iron Witch, the reigning kings of UK sludge, team up with the magnificently bearded grindcore/sludge berserkers The Atrocity Exhibit for this 7" split of pure audio carnage. 1 track each, both 6 minutes long, both designed to make your brain leak out through your nostrils such is the sheer force of the music contained within these grooves. The Atrocity Exhibit swerve the use of blistering speed sometimes shown in their past work and instead spit out the snail-paced 'Throne Of Bile', a masterclass in tension-filled suffering; a track rippling with a violent, unpredictable swagger that's constantly threatening to explode in your face. Iron Witch offer no respite, with 'Her Cheating Heart' being perhaps their best song yet; a track of such colossal heaviness and down-tuned, down-beat, forceful depression that's it's like having your face forced down into the muck that lines the banks of the Mersey. With both bands on such rampantly aggressive form, this is without a doubt the ugliest 7" to crawl its way out of the UK this year.

Iron Witch track was recorded by Bri and Devo Doom at the 1in12 Studio, Bradford, in September 2013

The Atrocity Exhibit track was recorded, mixed and mastered by Ian Boult at Stuck On A Name Studios, Nottingham, in July 2012

A joint release between Dead Chemists and Witch Hunter Records, this split 7" is limited to 500 copies, on none more black vinyl, and comes with a 4 panel gatefold sleeve, with artwork & layout by James Caygill

This 7” release is loud, brutal and heavy from the word go and it shows two amazing bands at the top of their game. Two 6 minute epic songs packed full of epic violent riffs if you like your music that little bit dangerous. Iron Witch and The Atrocity Exhibit lay their souls on the line here and it makes for deeply uncomfortable listening.

So do yourself a favour and listen to this brutal record at full blast and witness British Underground Sludge Metal/Grindore Metal at it's finest.

Another brilliant release from Witch Hunter Records which you buy on Vinyl now or Buy Now Download if you want to check out before you buy. Check out the other excellent releases from Witch Hunter Records. Loads of great stuff to buy and even a few free downloads to check out as well.
