The Review:
'The Great Dying' from Canada 's Yeti On Horseback is as
miserable as it is resplendent. With 5 of the 6 tracks pushing the 10-15 minute
mark, you know you're going to be taken on a journey.
'Tree Of Death' kicks things into action
with it's crawling pace and majestic guitar leads while the vocals scream and
bellow over the top. There's definite nods to kings of gothic doom Paradise Lost
and My Dying
Bride prevalent on tracks like 'Viking
Mushroom Tea' and 'Dragged Down To
Hell', although with extra weight and distortion. The latter building a
church with giant spires only to destroy it by the end.
Each
track is an epic, 'Fables and Lies'
offers some head banging riffs and great melancholic grooves. I'm reminded of
forgotten British doomsters Centurion's Ghost for some reason. When the
war drums meet the wall of distortion around the 7 minute mark it's wonderful.
'Lynch (A prelude)' bleeds into 'Elephant Man' and both feature samples
from 1982's film of the same name. The latter is a near perfect song; soaring melodies,
crushing and enveloping riffs, brutal vocals, it's got the lot! It's
beautifully downtrodden in it's make up and utterly captivating.
This
is a superb debut from a young band on an upward curve, it'll be interesting to
see how the band progresses.
