At Devil Dirt - Chapter II – "Vulgo gratissimus auctor" Review

Chapter II "Vulgo gratissimus auctor" cover art

At Devil Dirt is a Sludge/Fuzz/Grunge/Stoner Metal Band from Chile

The members are

Néstor "Gato" Ayala (Guitar/Vocals)
Francisco "Hongo" Alvarado (Drums)

At Devil Dirt are a masterful duo of epic Sludge/Stoner Metal greatness. They are gaining a loyal fan base within the Stoner/Sludge Metal community with their highly infectious blend of distorted Sludge/Stoner Metal.

They released their first S/T debut album in 2011 to huge acclaim on various webs and blogs. And rightly so. It was a brilliant slab of distorted Sludge/Stoner Metal that mixed Fuzz Rock, Desert Rock, Grunge and Doom Metal to a highly original effect.

They were compared to such legendary bands as Electric Wizard, Alice In Chains, Kyuss and Torche. Well At Devil Dirt pay homage to these great bands but still manage to sound something breathtakingly original.

Well the guys are back with their amazing new album - Chapter II – "Vulgo gratissimus auctor" A 11 song and 44 minute blast of more top-notch distorted down-tempo amplifying worship Sludge/Stoner Metal riffage

The riffs are louder, heavier and better than ever. This album just blasts the other one into dust. At Devil Dirt have released an album that should cement their fame and reputation as one of South America’s best Stoner/Sludge Metal hopes.

If you’re a fan of their last album then be prepared for something of a more heavier and distorted journey. These guys have incorporated a healthy dose of Blues Rock as well. It’s still hard to believe this is a two man group as they have the energy, passion and drive of a much bigger band.

The songs are brilliantly written and performed through out. I haven’t stopped listening to this album since I bought it a few days ago. It’s an album I fell instantly in love with from the first listen.

Fans of this band are right when they call these guys the fuzzier version of Electric Wizard of Stoner/Sludge Metal as they do play with slow-driven down-tempo distorted riffs.

So what more can I say about this album. Well its full of some of the strongest collections of songs I have heard this year. Each song has got a huge instant likeability factor about them. This is music that any music fan would love. Sludge Rock/Metal fan or not.

It’s brilliantly produced and it can get loud at times but the more better for it. Check out standout tracks – I Walk Aimlessly, Curse, Lie To Me and Let it Flow. The guys are experts at mixing their genres brilliantly well. One minute its Fuzz Rock, the next Sludge then it goes into Desert/Stoner Rock territory then back to other genres with relevant ease.

The lyrics can be a bit edgy at times but gives this album a rather cool hard edge to it. And I for one applaud the more darker tone of this album compared to their previous album. It shows the band are not afraid to step out of their comfort zone. And step out they do.

All I can say this is another brilliant Sludge/Stoner Metal album that I can’t recommend highly enough. It will be on a lot of best of 2012 lists. Definitely a Top 10 album of 2012 for me. Amazing.

Highly Recommended – You can buy this brilliant album on Bandcamp right now for the low price of $4. Physical releases CD and Vinyl will be released on 31st August. So get buying now.
