GURT - You Ain't From Around These Parts? - Review

You Ain't From Around These Parts? cover art

GURT is a Blues Fused Doom/Sludge Metal Band from London, UK

The members are:

Gareth Kelly - Growth - Mouth
Simon Edwards - Simo - Bashing
Dave Blakemore - Spice - Bassmaster
Rich Williams - Sedulurt - Riffmonster

GURT are a band who have a lot of followers on the Sludge/Doom/Stoner Metal scene as they have released a string of excellent releases. They have just released their excellent new EP - You Ain't From Around These Parts?

Now this is GURT ver 2.0 as they have some new members in their ranks. Not that it makes any difference as the guys sound as ferocious and pissed off as ever. Read the press bio to read more.

"Any follower of GURT’s actions will have noticed that this year has meant a significant line up change within the band with Jamie McCathie (Guitar) and John Hughes (Bass) exiting the band at the end of 2011 to travel to foreign pastures to live. This has meant that new recruits in the form of Rich Williams on guitar (of Sedulus fame) and David Blakemore on Bass (who has filled in on previous gigs) have taken up the challenge of replacing 2 of the founding members…. And WHAT A JOB THEY HAVE DONE!!

Anyone who has had the chance to see the new Version 2.0 of GURT will now see how well the 4 have connected and a new found energy has been used into producing a brand NEW EP for all to hear before 2012 is over! In order to complete the transition in an interesting way this recording of songs will feature both Jamie and Rich on guitar duties and will feature 5 members on the songs featured….

The ‘You Ain’t From Around These Parts EP’ features:

1: (Pre) Verted (Intro)
2: You Ain’t From Around These Parts?
3: Inverted Pill Willy (Wollop)"

What we have is 9 minutes of dirty blues fused Sludge/Doom Metal that GURT are famous for. They are one of the rising stars within the UK Underground scene. And this release proves why they have got that reputation.

They just fucking rock big time. They can release an album of nursery rhymes and they would still fucking rule.

First Track - (Pre) Verted (Intro) is an audio clip to set up the dirty infused tone that is going to hit for the next 7 mins or so after this track.

So now buckle up the real GURT finally appear on the EP's title track - A 4 minute blast of hardcore based vocals and hard-hitting riffs to match. You can hear the intensity of Gareth's vocals right from the start. He is more like an out of control preacher shouting to his Sludge/Stoner Metal congregation. And your going to take notice with the band on this loud and heavy out of control form.

Final track is the brilliantly titled - Inverted Pill Willy (Wollop) - a 3 minute blast of fast paced riffage with more insane pissed off vocals from Gareth. If I ever see these guys in concert which I hopefully will do some day then I am going to buy Gareth a beer so he can rest his vocals. He just screams at you. Do I know what the shouts. Nope. I don't think Gareth does either and that is the beauty of this song. Just a band playing harsh based Sludge/Stoner/Doom Metal with violent outbursts of intense riffs.

I feel it's time GURT should release that full length debut album. They have released a string of excellent releases and this is up there with the best of them. But I want them to finally prove their worth to the world and release something far more substantial as these guys have talent. They need to be heard on the big stages of Rock.

The world is ready for GURT. And I can't fucking wait.

Buy this EP from BandCamp right now where you can also buy their other excellent releases. Some for Free and Pay as You Want Downloads.
