I originally featured Supervoid last year when I reviewed their excellent debut demo. It received a lot of praise from the Sludge/Stoner Metal community for its blend of hard hitting progressive riffs. The band told me months ago, they were recording their debut album and to send me a copy when it was ready. Well folks I am happy to report that time is now.
Supervoid have sent me their eagerly awaited debut album – Filaments – that is due to be released on Oct 26th 2013.
Well what can I say about the album. It’s a mighty fine heavy slab of Progressive Sludge/Stoner Metal riffs. Supervoid have managed to include elements of Doom and Space Rock to give this album an out of this world vibe. Imagine if Tool decided to go Stoner Metal well that’s what you would get with Supervoid.
The first two tracks – Coat Of Luminous and Braymerian: War Elephant – prove this band is serious about their cosmic blend of progressive rock/metal. Though it still has plenty of great Sludge/Stoner metal riffs to get your teeth stuck into. Vocalist Brian has the perfect balance of light and darkness when shouting his heart out. The band lay down some mighty fine cosmic based riffs to tear the galaxies to.
Look at the excellent album cover to show you what sort of journey awaits you. The album will take you to the far reaches of space all done through epic riffs though your journey will be perilous as the band do venture into some pretty dark places. Especially on tracks such as Ride The Snake and Wake Of The Smoke Jumper.
It’s on those two track where Supervoid show why they are highly thought of within the Sludge/Stoner Metal scene. The way they blend Sludge/Stoner Riffs with the heavier prog rock side of their music is something you don’t hear much of nowadays so Supervoid are definitely doing something highly original.
Supervoid are an experimental band as they don’t stick to one particular type of sound or genre. They venture into other genres to give the listener an action packed ride into the unknown. This is an album that will appeal to all fans across the Rock/Metal spectrum – Prog, Sludge, Stoner, Doom, Space-Rock, There is something for everyone and I am only 4 songs into this excellent album.
5th song – Ladders – is a more straightforward affair with Supervoid playing some storming riffs from the start. Vocalist bringing his clean singing persona instead of his slightly more demonic growl based persona. It’s a track showing that Supervoid at probably their most vulnerable as the progressive side of their music is nowhere to be seen. This is the Stoner Rock vibe shining through and winning the day with some inspired guitar playing in the background.
Up next is Arcane Groves – one of the albums epic standout tracks running for almost 10 mins in length. So you better buckle up as Supervoid are about to go supernova. The band show their progressive side once again and it probably the song the albums standout track. Harsh vocals come at you full force out of nowhere before the band pull back to some sort of Stoner Rock normality with the clean vocals providing a brief respite but don’t get too comfortable as the band will soon show their heavier Sludgier side as the band prepare for one epic final assault.
I am not going to review any more tracks as I don’t want to spoil any more surprises. You may think I have done but I haven’t even scratched the surface yet. Supervoid have created a vast musical world waiting to be explored and discovered by you all. Supervoid have written an extraordinary debut album that will win them many fans across the whole rock spectrum.
Production is immense through out. The album will have you hooked from the very first riff. Just be prepared to blown away by Supervoid. Filaments is a must have album of any genre.
Outstanding and Highly Recommended.
